Gage Roads Atomic Pale Ale 2x 24 330ml Cartons $73.80 @ Dan Murphy's eBay Click & Collect

corkage

Another deal making good use of the ebay CORKAGE code for drinkers who like a pale ale.

Gage Roads are a funny one. They started as a craft brewery in WA, took some cash from Woolies to brew some of their in-house brands and kind of lost the plot, going nowhere while craft beer exploded in popularity around them.
They have ditched the Woolies connection and claim to be returning to craft beer roots. They are going OK with one of their brews winning big awards (Little Dove).

This deal is for their Atomic Pale Ale. It is an American style pale ale, in the same school as Fat Yak or Little Creatures. It is a bit more bitter than a Fat Yak (35 IBU compared to 25) but it doesn't have as much in the fruity hops, in my opinion. At under $40 a case in this deal it is great value, however, and it is a bit unfair for me to be comparing it to costlier brews. Compared to the other Pale Ale deal for Cricketer's Arms, this is a bit more flavoursome and a better bet if you can stretch to the 2 cartons.

2 Cartons come to $103.80 for click and collect, less the $30 voucher to land at $73.80. I bought some a couple of weeks ago with a best before of 30/11/17. YMMV.

Gage roads sleeping giant IPA also available but $59.99 before discount. I would go one case of each to change it up. I got the IPA with another ebay code and surprisingly it is quite good.

I find the gage road beers to be very nice. This is a great deal imo.

    • I highly recommend any/all of their brews. I only discovered them a few months ago and haven't changed to another beer since.

  • "They have ditched the Woolies connection and claim to be returning to craft beer roots."

At an RRP of $51 per slab I find this hard to believe. This is cheaper than many standard domestic beers such as VB/Carlton Draught etc. Can anyone confirm/comment on the quality? Is this a Woolworths astroturf brew or proper craft beer?

Not astroturf, but not up to the quality of an $80-a-box craft either. RRP is $57 on special at BWS this week for $52, which is presumably why Dan's is offering it for a fraction under that.
I peg it around Fat Yak level for enjoyment.

      • Cheers mate, ordered 2 slabs.

This is one of my favourite beers, and other people I have had try it said it was excellent too.

However the carton I bought more recently wasn't as good as the carton I got last December. Still good, just didn't blow me away with every bottle like the last carton did. Not sure if it's just a different batch or this carton was older/more stale.

Agree with all of this, one of my faves too but I have noticed a change of late, can't put my finger on it. I think it was even better when it had the old label too so not sure if they rebranded it completely at some stage? Either way a pretty enjoyable beer.

Love Atomic and super annoyed they changed the label - the old one was super cool

        • Agreed, Atomic is one of my favourite beers, it's heaps better than Fat Yak.

    • Top drop IMO. Have been drinking Gage Roads for years with some good & bad experiences. This Atomic Pale is currently priced below the more familiar brands to capture market share. At some future point anticipate paying $65+ for this

    • I'm not sure whether the guys brewing it have big beards. I mean that seems to make the beer "craft"?.

I mean it's a little wierd when the same beer can be instantly not be craft when a big company buys it. It's a bit like an alternative band going mainstream. If the beer is to your taste, drink it. Enjoy the best thing about the craft beer craze, which is the huge variety of mostly fairly decent beer at frequently good discounts for the ozbargainer.

  • nice. Thanks for posting this take on the deal. I went for the pale ale + IPA. Happy I logged in tonight!

  • Atomic is quite good, but the Gage Roads Break Water is also available on DM eBay and is in my opinion a much nicer beer

  • 1x Sleeping Giant case $59.99
    1x Captain Morgan Black 700ml $44.95

$74.94 after $30 off. Good combo!

  • Good beer, great price thanks.

i also feel this beer used to be a lot better, although my tastes have significantly changed over the 1-2 years since drinking this one but either they've eased back on the hops and/or the beer hasn't as much body anymor. Perhaps my pallete just expects more from pale ales now (i.e pirate life pale ale)
