With Telstra charging $150 to unlock, you're better off paying the extra $70 and getting them directly from Apple, unlocked for $999.

    • -7

But you would have to wait 3 weeks

      • +9

Oh no… 3 weeks!!! How will people survive!!!

    • What if you are a telstra customer?

      • +1

if you have enough services with them then they will waive it.

    • I am on the Vodaphone network and bought a 32gb iphone4 outright from them for $888 (only available to those on a Vodafone plan). It was free to unlock. This also applies to everyone on the 3 network. Once unlocked, the phone can be used on the Telstra network. Effectively, I got a 32g iphone4 to use on the Telstra network for only $888.

  • +9

$70 cheaper than buying outright, but what's the point if it's locked to Telstra? Wouldn't you be significantly better off just starting a new contract with them and getting the phone subsidised?

  • +1

That definately aint an iphone 4 in the picture

  • +2

yeah what the F is that picture? Looks like a chinese knockoff.

poor deal anyway.. rather buy it outright from Apple or better yet get it on a plan..

  • -2

Hey guys the photo it uploaded is incorrect, it is however 100% an iPhone 4

  • +3

    no deal… locked to Telstra..

  • +2

    no deal here, folks

  • +1

how does a bootleg picture make its way onto your site??

  • +1

how can a phone, purchased outright be locked to a carrier…

did ur company get mobiles on plans from telstra then sell it as outright/unlocked???

  • +2

Sounds like a bullshit deal 2 me!

  • +1

    Deal is OK

  • +1

    Bad deal.

  • +1

    Bad deal

  • -5

For those wondering where their negative has gone, let me remind you of our voting guidelines. The phone is locked to a network and this has been disclosed in the description. If you don't like the deal, don't vote.

If it's a no deal and if you really want to vote negative for it, at the very least please point/explain to other users how they can get a better deal to make the warning a useful one.

    when u buy outright

i still dont know how an outright phone can be locked
    please explain

  • Hi Guys,

These have been purchased from a Telstra distributor, not as part of a plan. Therefore they are locked to Telstra but are available to purchase outright.

We feel if you are a Telstra customer and looking for an outright deal why not save $70. Good deal for Telstra customers and this is who it is targetted towards.

    • +3

I think telstra customers would rather go on a contract and get the phone subsidised.

      $20 off a $949 product isn't a bargain.

    • +1

That's fine, but how much would a contract subsidised phone cost?

For comparison, I have a $59 per month cap plan with Optus and my subsidised 32GB iPhone 4 costs me an additional $10 per month, so I pay a total of $240 over the two years of the contract in addition to my usage fees. I can't imagine Telstra charging much more for users who sign up to a plan with them, so I am still waiting to be convinced that $929 for a phone locked to Telstra without a plan is a deal.

      • +1

so I am still waiting to be convinced that $929 for a phone locked to Telstra without a plan is a deal.

The phone is $70 cheaper and is a one off purchase.
No need to sign a contract and be locked in for 24 months.

Yes you can get the phone for less if you want to sign up for 24 months however not everyone wants to do this or they might not be able to enter a new contract.

        • This doesn't address the problem though. If you are already a Telstra customer (or prospective Telstra customer) then there is a very low chance that you are not already in a contract or likely to enter one. An earlier post explained Telstra's $150 unlocking charge, so non-Telstra customers (who would be buying the phone outright from Apple) would make a net loss with this "deal".

Summary: if you're not with Telstra, this phone costs $1079 ($80 higher than retail). If you're with Telstra, and able to enter a contract, this is an enormous loss. If you're with Telstra, and want a 32GB iPhone 4, aren't you going to need to change your existing plan anyway?

          Still not a deal. Negative.

          • @Tenebrae:

This doesn’t address the problem though

            What problem?

If you are already a Telstra customer (or prospective Telstra customer) then there is a very low chance that you are not already in a contract or likely to enter one

So every single telstra customer is able to or wants to enter a contract?

An earlier post explained Telstra’s $150 unlocking charge

Which is irrelivant to the deal

so non-Telstra customers (who would be buying the phone outright from Apple) would make a net loss with this “deal”.

But they would only buy this particular phone if they wanted to use it with telstra or unlock it themselves for FREE and use it on any carrier.

  • No thanks for me. I will stick with my 3GS and also I can still jailbreak it nicely. ;)

  • +2

Seems like this site is getting too neg adverse.

Basically it's a crap deal, because you are paying close to a grand cash (and now) for a locked phone. No phone calls, no data, nada. Anyone who would pay this for a locked phone needs their head read. So, if that doesn't justify a neg then what does?

I'll also be sticking with my 3GS with OS4. It still is a fun phone and there's nothing about iPhone 4 that could make me "upgrade".

    • -2

      Basically it’s a crap deal

      Why?

because you are paying close to a grand cash

I see, but this is cheaper than buying a phone from Apple direct.
Sure it is locked but why would a telstra customer buy from apple when they can buy it here and save some money?

No phone calls, no data, nada. Anyone who would pay this for a locked phone needs their head read

Yes, that is what buying a phone outright means.
A contract and subsidised phone is not for everyone, for those people they need to look at outright phones.

      • In theory sure, this is "cheaper", but an unlocked phone also has intrinsic value. It gives you the freedom to shop around for calls and data, use overseas SIM's when travelling, and most likely it may retain slightly higher resale value for these exact reasons - when you are buying a $1000 gadget this may factor in eventually when you decide to upgrade. The unlocked phone will be a better "investment" in the long run.

    • -3

Basically it’s a crap deal, because you are paying close to a grand cash (and now) for a locked phone. No phone calls, no data, nada. Anyone who would pay this for a locked phone needs their head read. So, if that doesn’t justify a neg then what does?

What you just said does in a way justifies a neg. In a sense, it's a warning to others in that you're paying almost a grand for the phone, and on top of that you would need to be paying for the phone calls and data. And not to mention to excessive call charges on a prepaid plan from Telstra. So unless if someone uses the iPhone on prepaid and makes just the few odd calls a month on the Telstra network and with minimum or no data access, then they're probably better off going on a contract. Couldn't agree more with this.

But the negs are revoked for reasons such as 'bad deal', or 'no deal', 'phone is locked' (which is disclosed), etc. If someone wants to raise a warning for this deal, it's fine but they need to state a reason why like you just did.

      • I have bought 2 x iPhones outright (one locked, one unlocked from apple), plus I have another one a business account - all have ended up on Telstra. The prepaid and business-use call costs are not actually that bad.

Remember, the handset has to be paid for one way or the other. If you read the fine print you can see the costs for that over a contract term. Most telcos "hide" the handset cost using subsidies - but those plans have more expensive call costs. At the end of the day, the best deal is one where you pay the least TOTAL amount over the term. In our case, it worked out cheaper buying outright and using "bring your own prepaid".

Note I am not talking about those Prepaid "plans" where you get $200 (or whatever) worth of free calls. Those can work out very costly, especially if you have variable usage patterns and/or don't match your use to your plan accurately. After a lot of calculations I decided to use prepaid + outright phone because it worked out about $200 cheaper over a year compared to Virgin, Optus, etc that we'd used previously.

  • +4

9% is hardly a bargain…specially as there are conditions on it(locked which you've stated), its a start though!
    (9 Based on the 929)

I think the removing of the negs is a bit harsh, look, no one has really voted it positive, so many people voted it negative… really poor if your going to remove so many at a time… maybe one or two… but seems a few people didn't like it.

    • +2

      Hi wisc.
We'd like to partially agree with you - 9% is not a massive amount in percentage terms. This is because Apple are notoriously tight on margins, and thus it is generally VERY difficult to find any discount at all on their products, especially something as high in demand as the iPhone 4. Thus it is true, the 9% on offer hear pails into insignificance compared to what may be on offer other types of products/services.

Having said that, it remains that someone looking to buy an iPhone 4 who is already locked to Telstra (there are A LOT of such people), then they save money hear compared to buying it anywhere else. At the end of the day that's what OzBargain is all about…

      • +2

What you say about Apple being brutal with reseller margins is absolutely true, which is why my judgement of your deal shouldn't in any way be considered a judgement of you guys.

I'm just saying that in my opinion knocking $20 an iPhone and calling it a bargain can't be justified if it's locked to Telstra, who charge $150 to unlock it. The better deal would be walking into the Apple store and paying retail price, which is the opposite of a bargain to begin with.

  • -3

Hey, all you people complaining about it being locked to Telstra… have you actually tried to USE an iPhone or other smartphone on networks other than Telstra? If you compared, I reckon you would quickly decide that the extra few $$ to get super-fast Telstra data coverage and a reliable telephone signal more than justify the cost compared to Optus/Voda's over-subscribed rubbish!

If you use a telephone for business (rather than a fashion accessory), then the fact that this offer is locked to Telstra is completely irrelevant. That because it's currently not viable (irrespective of cost savings) to change to another network anyway. :-)

    • Yes, I've always USED my iPhones on Optus, very happy with it, what's your point? And no, this is not a bargain.

      • I was involved in a large (about 2,500 users) company change-over from Telstra > Optus, and I can tell you it was not a pleasant experience. After months of frustration many people decided to pay for their OWN phonecalls so they could swap back and get network coverage!! LOL

What's my point? Gee, I thought it was obvious - oh well, let me use an analogy.

Richim, you just said you use Optus and are very happy. So, imagine if a deal was published here that offered a $70 saving off a phone, but it would be locked to OPTUS. You say you are an existing and happy Optus user, so I can't imagine you'd be planning on changing any time soon?

OK, so it's a (hypothetical) phone deal that would be just perfect for you, at a handset price that is $70 less than you can get anywhere else….

… would you neg THAT deal?

      • I’ve always USED my iPhones on Optus, very happy with it, what’s your point?

Do you like your web browsing experience degraded too?

  • if you have other Telstra products (homephone, foxtel, bigpond etc) you can get the Iphone 4 on the $49 contract with an extra $10 taken off (possibly more if you bargain with them and have lots of products) so you get the phone for $150 upfront and pay only $39 a month for 24mths. Good deal there..

  • +1

    Please note everyone…

This bargain is particularly relevant for the HUGE number of people currently on Telstra contracts, and looking to upgrade their phone to the most popular phone on the market at the moment (the iPhone 4).

If you are not locked in to a Telstra contract at the moment, then there may or may not be better deals around.

If someone can beat this on an upfront, outright iPhone 4 on the Telstra network, then please let us know as we'd be very interested to hear about it.

    • +3

If someone can beat this on an upfront, outright iPhone 4…

That's not the deal you're offering, though. You're offering a phone owned by Telstra for a little less than the price of actually buying the phone outright. Since Telstra still own it, they get to decide what network you can use it on, and whether or not you're allowed to use it on a competitor's network, and at what price you'd pay for that privilege.

If you don't want to be on a Telstra contract, it's more expensive than buying the phone outright. If you do want to be on a Telstra contract, you'd be better off getting the phone on a contract through Telstra. No bargain.

  • So many comments, so few effective votes! :D

It's a good deal for a limited target market: namely those who wanted to buy a Telstra locked iPhone 4 in the first place!

For the rest who still want one, get it from Apple, from someone else, and move on.

Good on the rep for offering it in the first place. Hope they get most of that target market.

  • FWIW, you can probably get this unlocked by Telstra for free if you have other services with them. Simply tell them you're going overseas and want to use a pre-paid sim. Simple, and worked for me.

  • +2

at least you can get it quick, no need to wait

  • +3

Just unlock it for free: http://apcmag.com/unlock-your-iphone-4-to-use-it-on-any-netw…

But to break it down. If your kid wants an iphone 4, but you dont want them on a plan. And have every intention of using telstra prepaid> Save $80 and get it here. Otherwise, completely useless deal for 95% of people who dont want the hassle/risk of unlocking a phone for a 9% saving

  • A limited number of people will find this deal of value to them, but for the general OZbargain population this is bad deal.
You would not get a user posting this deal, only a REP.

Who would want to save 9%, when it puts restrictions on them like the inability to use the phone whilst travelling. The inability to change providers in the future. The lower resale value in the future.

As mentioned, this is generally only for people who are using prepaid Telstra, because it's logical to sign up for a plan and have the phone subsidised. $10 a month for 24mths is cheap.
One of the benifits of being on prepaid is that you can switch providers when you want. But with this phone you are locked in to Telstra.
The other advantage of prepaid is that you can save money if you have fewer calls/usage in certain months. However, this saving would very likely be negated by the additional $690 (plus interest) you would have paid for this handset.
Even if you have to cancel your current Telstra plan and switch to a new one, or just upgrade your handset to the iphone4, you will most likely still be better off getting it from Telstra on contract.

    • A limited number of people will find this deal of value to them

Just like every other deal posted here.

like the inability to use the phone whilst travelling

You can use the phone when you are travelling without any issues if you want to roam with your telstra sim card.

This deal is cheaper than buying from apple directly and you can unlock the phone yourself for free using ultrasn0w http://apcmag.com/unlock-your-iphone-4-to-use-it-on-any-netw…

Apple products generally have a very small markup and for a product in such high demand to be discounted seems like a good deal to those who find it relevant

  • +1

This is not a deal at all, why would you want a locked phone for $929 while you can get unlocked phone directly from Apple for $999.

    • +1

agree….just buy it from the Apple store…

    • -1

because you may already be on a Telstra contract.
