    • Lol nice find

      • inbox = spam ? not 2 hard 2 find, either is cotd website LOL

        • +3

CotD sometimes have subscriber-only deals, which don't feature on the website.

not 2 hard 2 see, if you looked at the cotd website LOL

    • Awesome find - I thought the black picture look like Seagate, you have taken the guess work away!

    • +26

I was wondering what brand it was, then I saw the picture.

Sea + gate at the background. lol, no need to google :D

      • +1

lol! nice catch… was wondering how odd it was to have such a background

      • +1

wow, u r absolutely right man. Looks like COTD also wanted to let few people know about it.
I did not think of it.

        Good job.

        • +1

should have said spoiler warning first. u took the mystery out of it. now i dont want to buy it. thanks a lot.

      • +4

Thanks, my head was hurting wondering what manufacturer was called Gatesea. ;)

  • nice google detective work

  • Lol yeah seagate.

  • how does a 2.5 portable HDD and 3.5 HDD differs in terms of performance (transfer rate)? would 2.5 one, since its USB powered, will have slower transfer rate?

    • +3

No, power has nothing to do with it. The platter size can make a 3.5 drive faster than an equivalent 2.5", all else being equal. There are plenty of fast 2.5" drives out there tehse days, usually the SATA/PCI/e/USB interface is the bottleneck, rather than raw disk access speed.

In some cases 2.5's are faster, since they spinup quicker.

      • More like spin rate rather than platter size that makes one drive faster than the other. Although platter density does affect it a little bit.

      • Agreed. You won't notice the difference between a 2.5" and 3.5" over a USB2 connection. 2.5"s are pretty quick these days too!

I was going to get one, I think its a good price, even better than recent eBay sales…. hmmm….

nah, Imma wait until they crack the ton, shouldn't be too far away.

  • Nice price, even if you make your own 1TB drive ($4 enclosure + $147 1TB drive)
    $4 Enclosure

    • +2

If you go down that route, just make sure you get an enclosure that fits a 12.5mm tall drive, normal 2.5" drives are 9mm tall. Also make sure its a SATA enclosure, not IDE like that one in your link!

  • +1

Seems like a pretty good price, but I guess only a bargain if you need it (like anything else). I saw on eBay that someone scored a GoFlex model for $150 shipped, which has eSata/USB3 capability for $14 more. I suspect prices of these USB2 only drives are going to drop pretty fast.

But oh so tempting to be able to carry around 1TB worth of 'media' lol… must resist…

    • haha I was watching that auction. The other auction by the same seller closed at $137 + $9 shipping, so little disparity there.

Where can you get the cable for $14?

I only just resisted the temptation of putting in a bid - still hoping that 1tb drives will become less thick. Shall make do with a 640gb in the meantime that will go into my laptop once these 1tb usb 3.0 start dropping in price. Should last me a few years…as long as I don't visit ozbargain

      • He didn't say you could get the cable for $14. Read his post again.
This seagate from COTD is $136 delivered. The GoFlex model mentioned is/was $150. $14 more.

        • Sorry yes that's what I meant. I'm not sure how much the USB3/eSata cable costs for the GoFlex models.

  • Nice search, mayocruz

Here's the stats, copied from the above website, assuming it's the same product :)
I wonder where the other 1 year warranty went :)

    Specifications
    Model Number ST910004EXM101-RK
    Interface USB 2.0
    Capacity 1TB

    PHYSICAL
    Height 17.6mm (0.69 in)
    Width 80.01mm (3.15 in)
    Length 141.29mm (5.56 in)
    Weight (typical) 160g (.35 lb)
    Shipping Weight .36kg (0.794 lb)

    PERFORMANCE
    Spin Speed (RPM) 5400 RPM
    Features
    Warranty 3 years

    • It's rather huge isn't it for a 2.5 inch drive? The height alone is 17.6mm. Don't think it is as portable as WD.

      • All 2.5" drives over 500-640GB are 12.5mm thick. This is thicker than the normal (lower capacity) 2.5" drives which are 9mm. So just make sure you are comparing apples with apples.

This will probably still ship faster than the item I bought from them almost 3 weeks ago.

    Their deliveries have become shithouse!

    • +1

Looks like, they send order like: Order from COTD -> China , item from china -> COTD-> Buyer
they take ages. and in case of any problem, get ready for a good price in post and wait time or restock fees ;).
So Think price is very tempting, but I would rather buy it from a store for few more bucks for peace of mind and replacements ( just in case).

  • good deal if you ask me, the other day i nearly bought WD's 750gb for $129 at OW but i was like "nah, this can wait."

Then this deal came, instant buy! :D

  • I'd be cautious with these drives, they seem to lock up according to reviews/seagate forums. I need a portable drive, but still deciding whether to pick this up.

I don't want to be a killjoy, but Dick Smith are selling Seagate 1TB (7200rpm) external drive for $99. Not sure if it's exactly the same as this one though..

    http://www.dse.com.au/cgi-bin/dse.storefront/4ca48d040019167…

    • +1

The item you linked to is a 3.5" drive that needs a power supply. This one from COTD is a 2.5" USB only drive (no external power brick)

    • +10

An OzBargain 2.5" hard drive deal wouldn't be complete without some fool linking to a 3.5" priced cheaper. :D

  • review of the expected mystery hard drive
    http://blog.fosketts.net/2010/09/03/review-1-tb-seagate-expa…

    • Better hope none of these are DOA!

22mb/s transfer rate seems awfully slow… most of my external drives do at least 30mb/s.

  • good one. almost went to sleep when i was checking my emails. bought it instantly.

  • +1

Looks like COTD is making up for their f*ck up with the PS3 deal

    • what ps3? no one got them, system error resulting in negative stock :P

      • bad marketing tactic.

      • My point exactly!

      • +1

Wait…what? I actually scored a PS3 during their sale a few days ago.

        • +2

No you didn't, you have been scammed. :(

          Only joking :)

  • +1

There's a 640gb Seagate available at some OfficeWorks stores for $88, if you don't need the full TB.

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/31951

    13.77c per GB ($13.77 per 100gb) 640gb seagate.

    13.27c per GB ($13.27 per 100gb) COTD 1TB seagate.

  • Why only 2 year warranty instead of 3??

  • -7

Wow Sight & Sound have the 1.5TB WD/Buffalo/Seagate at $129 every day of the week

    • +4

Again another 3.5" post. Must we stress this is a 2.5" not 3.5". So no comparison there.

  • This deal is much better
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/32000
$133 and free shipping for a Seagate 2.5" 1GB drive.

    • -3

1GB oh jeez, what are we in, 1980

      • lol give him a break. G is right below T on the keyboard

    • Yep that's better, probably better service too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dgvo0am9oO8 anyone not watched it yet?

    • lol I probably wasn't in the right state of mind when typing that. Yeah it's 1TB.

    • anyone know's how well does COTD does their full money back guarantee? Long hassle I know but it might be worth the extra year warranty :P

Do they give store credit or cash back?

      • +1

According to what I know COTD has a bad reputation. The link I posted about gives you 3 year warranty which is more than COTD 2 year warranty.

Personally, I bought a few things from COTD and they gave me totally different things. I didn't bother contacting them for an exchange or refund as they are not worth the hassle.

        • +2

I suggest everyone, thinking to buy this from COTD to wait. till the time, you recieve this item in 3+ weeks, the price would come more down else where.

      • they never to that. Take my words. I got the wrong item, still they asked me to get it posted at my cost and pay restocking price.

  • Well if they stuff me around for more than two weeks i will get a credit card reversal. Simple as that…i don't wait for any company to stuff me about. I Pay them to provide me a service - if they cant follow through…

  • +1

Mine has just been dispatched from COTD - a full 5 days after ordering (which is totally acceptable for me). Never had a problem with COTD - either with their dispatch or their warranty process (they paid for the return cost).

    • I'm hoping what you say is true :]

Just received my drive today, and it is DOA. lights up, doesnt come up. (in fact there is a rattle when i shake it)

Very happy with dispatch time, and arrival time

Hoping they are good with the warranty process, as you have described

      • +2

I got mine today as well. Had the same problem, would only light up. Seems they don't get enough power over the USB. Had another USB HDD cable at home with the two USB Power plugs for additional power and it fired up okay.

Interestingly enough though the packaging inside appeared to have been damaged. Made it look as though it was seconds.

      • Clunky noise = need more juice, try Y cable (2 x connections on computer to 1 x connection to the portable disk).

      • Mine arrived today, exact same problem. Would light up, but not register as a device on USB. If the drive needs more power then it's a design flaw.

If I had known it was a seagate I wouldn't have ordered it in the first place. I'd rather have Samsung, WD, Hitachi.

        • You bought it not knowing the brand and you are annoyed at it being seagate? nice one. You bought knowing it could be anything.

          • @AntMan76: It's still a POS. And I won't be trusting COTD again.

            • @matreya: My order arrived on friday after receiving a dispatch email on thursday, I don't live too far away in melbourne after all. Included a 5m HDMI in the purchase.

My HD is DOA'ed too, filed a RMA online through the website. Tested the harddrive on laptop and desktop, no dice. Green LED lit and disk spinning but no connection recognised b/w it and the computers. Amazon and newegg reviews weren't favourable with a number of DOA complaints.

Here's hoping for a speedy return / exchange, I wouldn't mind driving by to their Mulgrave address if I could get it any faster or test it on the spot.

        • Some laptop USB ports don't supply enough power for portable hard disks. I know my Dell doesn't. I have to use an externally powered USB hub to get it to work.

        • Actually i've found the issue to be a dodgy cable, rather than the drive needing more power. I noticed that the cable was a little kinked in a couple spots. Try straightening it out and bit and plugging it back in. Worked for me. Doesn't really fix the fact its a dodgy cable, but its less of an issue for me cause i have plenty other cables around i can use.

  • Received mine, but it's not what I expected… it's so fat! Does it have two 2.5" drives inside or something?

If anyone wants to buy it off me please send me a personal message…

  • yes! i just received mine and its a fat bastard. defo looks like a 3.5 drive because i have a 500gb 2.5 and its way smaller, any ideas?

  • It's not 3.5" platters inside. Definitely 2.5" platters.

The reason it's so thick is because normal 2.5" portable drives uses 2 platters. But for this one it uses 3 platters because of the high capacity.

Not sure what a platter is? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_disk_platter

  • Bought one from this special but now the HDD turns into brick after only 2 weeks use.
My 100+ GB data copied from laptop is now gone.
Seagate quality seems getting worse and worse these days. It's used to be number 1 choice a few years ago.
This faulty issue seems to be a popular problem.
