It's crazy that a grey import, of a phone that's about to be replaced, with only 12 month of official Android updates left…is priced at $747. The price of phones is getting out of control.

    • +3

      ^^ This

The Pixel is overrated IMO and this is coming from someone who was a Nexus enthusuat for many years and the number of release bugs is really tiring from Google.
I for one decided it is better to be not in the bleeding edge and take slower updates from Sammy than broken updates

      • +3

Yes I too was a Nexus guy but the lack of support from Google outside of the warranty period, very short period of system updates and now premium pricing pushed me to the dark side.

I am now a iPhone guy and guess what? Nicer phone, cheaper or same price, fantastic and long running support and great resale.

In my opinion, unless you must have Android for some technical reason, buy an iPhone.

Oh, one more thing, Google have turned "evil".

        • +1

I have been thinking about it lately. I am an android person but i just noticed that iphone can also serve the purpose. I just bought a lg g6 solely for the wide-angle camera but same ended up with the same issues as previous andrpid phones like quick battery drain, no software updates, lack of security patches heavy UI and unnecessary bloatware. However, I bought my an IPad and i am amazed by the optimization, performance and the battery life.

My next phone will be an IPhone for sure.

        • +4

Me personally, I don't think any phone is worth over $600. Even $500 I kind of feel is unnecessarily expensive.

With that being said, I'd never buy a Samsung/iPhone/Pixel at the current prices.

That's why I've been looking at Xiaomis.. and then when you see LG G6s and LG V20s for <$500 it gets pretty tempting.

        • +1

Yeah I'm seriously thinking of an iPhone for future( after my S8 has gone thru it's 2-3 year usage) … I've been put off by Apple's refusal to be more philanthrophic with their $100+ billion cash pile while Google tried something to better the life of people who can't spend the premium in poorer countries .. but as you said Google is turning into a regular company too

So no point in being tied down with poor performance, hope Google does something dramtic with it's Fuschia to keep the enthusiasts and lure the iPhone fans as well

        • +1

@illumination: oneplus 5 looks great. You can get the 6gb/64gb for ~$560 with the current ebay sale
although I'd prob pay the extra $120 for the 8gb/128gb model as I like to get 3yrs out of my phones

      • What 'broken updates' are you referring to exactly?

        • Well the first link was something that annoyed me greatly as it was my only phone used for Work and personal and there have been other quibbles, Too lazy to Google them all and provide links, read thru below or research more ;)

        • @kamban:

Add the recent Android Wear 2.0 issues.

Oh, and the worse, downgrading people's phones, causing soft-bricks and preventing future updates without unlocking the bootloader.

Google have completely lost it lately.

Pretty standard stuff really, all manufacturers have similar issues with their handsets.

          @PainToad:

Google have completely lost it lately.

          Bit of an overstatement.

        • @Lorindor:

          It really isn't.

        • @Lorindor:

"Pretty standard stuff really, all manufacturers have similar issues with their handsets."

Sure let me tell to my manager that the horrible echo feedback of her on the conference call causes by my Nexus 6 is pretty standard stuff with all handsets :/

I've been and still a fan of Google mate but no need to defend their shortcomings

        • @kamban:

Sure let me tell to my manager that the horrible echo feedback of her on the conference call causes by my Nexus 6 is pretty standard stuff with all handsets :/

That's the thing though, any phone can have issues, you just made it out that only Google has them.

          @PainToad:

          It really isn't.

Explain how they have then, and please don't mention the suspected use of large bezels and no headphone jack on the upcoming new Pixel.

        • @Lorindor: "That's the thing though, any phone can have issues, you just made it out that only Google has them"

How do I put it : I can only talk about my personal experience and I did, never was I generalising to offend you ;)

        • @Lorindor:

          Explain how they have then

It has been explained. Bricking devices with official updates and not providing a solution except for requiring the unlock of boot-loaders (which technically voids the OEM's warranty) is not acceptable.

        • @PainToad: Google's phone's don't have their warranty voided by unlocking their bootloaders though?

        • @Droz:

ONLY if you buy direct from Google. If brought from any other retailer, the warranty is through the OEM, NOT Google.

        • @PainToad: Ok, but I'm a little confused - the OEM is the "Original Equipment Manufacturer", so if you're buying a Pixel or a Nexus or whatever, your warranty gets honoured.

Do you mean if you buy a Samsung or LG phone, or something like that? A non-Nexus or non-Pixel?

        • @Droz:

I'm talking about Nexus devices, not Pixel.

        • @PainToad: Which OEM refused to fix a Nexus because it was unlocked? I'll bet it was LG? Sounds like a huge mistake, though

        • @Lorindor: Yet another example my friend, I don't want to be on the bleeding edge of Android nymore, happy being 2-3 months late with properly vetted updates

          http://www.androidpolice.com/2017/08/23/users-reporting-blue…

        • @kamban:

          Oh please, spare me mate.

Would you like me to supply links to the countless amount of issues Samsung have had with their devices over the years? Or perhaps I should just cherry-pick the ones that stand out the most and post them here for proof?

        • @Lorindor: Great, when we don't cite articles/proof we're generalising and when we do we cherry pick … no way to win eh :p

p.s I don't dispute that Sammy has issues unlike you holding the vigil for criticisms on El-Goog

        • @kamban:

I never asked for proof, I just don't see the need for someone to point out Google's flaws every time a deal for the Pixel is posted.

Yes, we get it, not every device is perfect, they all have their ups and downs, but please don't sit there and act like the other flagship smartphone manufacturers don't have their fair share (if not well above) of faults.

        • @Lorindor: mate, you did ask for proof when you posted this "What 'broken updates' are you referring to exactly?"

No Need to be defensive on this tbh, you are coming off fanboyish.

I don't agree with your move-on mindset as I'm trying to help some other bloke on OzBargain with credible info before they part with a few hundred bucks. I'll be glad if you do the same and give me a heads up on any potential issue I may have to look forward too

        • @kamban:

Did I? I don't see the word proof in any of my comments on this deal.

Call it whatever you want, I'm over reading the same dribble time and time again, and purely because Google is the underdog in the smartphone market and everyone likes to make fun of the new kid on the block.

        • @Lorindor: Well not at all, I used Nexus phones for last 5 years - just over giving them the excuse for mucking up the experience with many a updates and after paying top dollar it stings

        • @kamban:

There's a lot of bitterness towards Google, mainly because of the reasons I mentioned above, and it's a shame that they have to over-deliver on their products because of those reasons.

I've been using a N5X for over 18 months and it has been a fantastic phone, and I intend to upgrade to a Pixel when the price is right, because it's great at what it does.

Sure, there may be cases of some users having issues, but much like any other electronic product ever released, it's all a lottery.

        • @Lorindor: Well Nexus is a good value for money product, with Pixel I'm sceptical as it is expensive and still is treated like a guinea pig unfortunately ( and I went to Sammy only coz it was subsidised by the carrier with a great deal , else would have gone for another value for money product like One PLus One )

    • A lot higher when first released.

    • Yeah

  • +2

I love my Google Pixel. Been an android user for the past 10 years and have never looked back. The Pixel is by far the best phone I have ever owned. Battery life, usability, look/feel. I can't wait for the next release.

My work phone is an Iphone 6, nothing wrong with it and in fact I don't mind it at all. However I much prefer the Pixel!

  • Google pixel is known to have microphone problem.

And when they said "some devices", it's a lot. My colleague got 1 of this, microphone gone after 4 months, got a replacement unit from google, microphone gone again after 2 months. Now using his 3rd unit.

    https://www.engadget.com/2017/03/09/some-google-pixel-phones…

    • yeah that was an old problem that still lingers today and could bite you in the future. I've learnt my lesson not to BUY expensive phones from Grey imports. Cost me quite a bit to return mine quite a while ago and took a while for them to send me a replacement (more than a month wait!) …

I sold mine immediately upon receiving a replacement. I am using a HTC U11 at the moment.

Definitely buy local with au warranty.

  • Personally, I feel its overpriced but each to their own.

The funny thing is people have upvoted a more expensive option (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/324001) massively yet, this cheaper option hardly has anywhere close to that many. People read the title and upvote. That said over 33% off. :)

    • That deal has been active for an extra 12 hours and thus has had extra time to garner upvotes. Don't think there's been enough time to make a fair comparison of the votes yet.

But agree with you. Theoretically this should (after some time) have more upvotes than the one you linked to.

    • The other deal was posted yesterday, this was posted two hours ago.

To me, the reasonable price for this phone is around $450.

    • What decent phone can you buy for $450?

      • +1

        LG V20? LG G6? 2x Xiaomis?

        • Can't see any LG g6 under $500. Not the mi6.

        • @wxyz234: It all depends on what you're looking for. I've been happy with a Huawei Honor 9, which I got a month or so ago for around $400. If you're happy with last year models Xiaomi mi5, OnePlus, and others are in some ways worth considering. https://www.kimovil.com/en/compare-smartphones/f_max_d+eurPr…

        • @wxyz234: Just wait till another eBay sitewide 10% off. Happens every second week. G6 seems to be the best value proposition to looks to performance IMHO.

        • @Khazidhea:

how are you charging the Huawei Honor 9? since I don't see an australian version for this phone

        • @wxyz234:

LG G6 under $500? See this page. The last 5 deals posted were <$500. Yes, I am aware it is not available at present, but it has come up somewhat often in recent times.

I didn't say the Mi6 was <$500. I was referring to phones like Xiaomi Redmi Note 4's which are popular here. I also wouldn't be spending >$500 on a Xiaomi. Xiaomi Mi5S is a phone that has come up in recent times for ~$300.

        • @illumination: never $450 and all those under $500 were with coupons. Reno note isn't really comparable to pixel.

        • @wxyz234:

You said for $450 initially. The cheapest listed on that page is $468. That is not far off (and you also said "can't see any LG G6 under $500" which shows you have factored in some price buffer too)

Yes, <$500 only with coupon but look how often it has come up. I agree that there are times you can't refer to old, expired deals that are no longer accessible, but you can see that this deal has come up 5 times in the last 2 months. That's very frequent.

Reno note isn't really comparable to pixel.

Agree but I wasn't comparing it to the Pixel. You said "decent" phone and I objectively think the Redmi Note 4 is a "decent" phone especially when you factor in the value you get for the price.

      • I don't think it is a decent phone today given the new pixel, iPhone 8 are around the corner and galaxy 8 is 700ish. So it is worth $450.

  • +1

The only thing this phone has going for it over the competition is the camera. A lot of the newer flagship phones such as the s8/U11/iPhone 7 and G6 all use smaller sensor on their main camera.

    • +1

yeah true. But having both owned pixel, s8 & U11, I can swear by U11's "slight" edge over the quality of shot it takes, especially on low light situations you'll get good details from the u11. I've stuck with the U11.

      • +1

I don't own either, and I personally been happy with smartphone cameras since the G4 days. I considered the U11 but I didn't want to go with a phone that has big bezels again.

From what I've seen of the pixel if you're willing to sacrifice speed by using hdr+ on mode it can take some amazing photos depending on situation that would rival any smartphone. Which seems to give a little edge to the Google phone. Even on older nexus phones you can get some amazing photos with it. The HTC U11 is amazing, it makes me wonder how better it would have been if it used a bigger sensor like the pixel. I hope the new pixel raises the bar again.
