It's crazy how much the price of Japanese whiskeys have gone up. I still have a catalogue from a Dan's whiskey tasting from 2015, where a bottle of this was around $80-$90

    • well its about $60-$70 AUD in japan still. Better off going something a bit less popular but similar flavours like nikka

      • I think you confusing it with the Yamazaki NAS (no age statement). That is readily available for around JPY5,000 (~$60 AUD).

In contrast the Yamazaki 12-year still retails more than double that, and to find some in stock you might have to pay up to JPY14,000 (~$160 AUD).

        • rrp for 12 year old in Japan is 9180 yen (with tax included). still very easy to find at this price

130-160 aud are normally the reseller wine shops

        • @ynot1985:

still very easy to find at this price

Where exactly can we find it for that price?

        • @meku:

No I am not confusing it for NAS. I don't know why someone downvoted me but that's the price I bought it for last year in Kuromon Ichiba market. I have family in Japan, and they tell me its not much more expensive this year in that market.

          @meku:

          Department stores in Japan.

I picked up 7 bottles of that in Japan in June

it was the only aged single malt you can easiy find in Japan these days

        • @ynot1985:

Yeh good place to start. I remember AEON had the yamazaki 12 for 7000yen when I was there last year as well.

        • @Qmar:

          I was there in June..

all the ones I see at Kuromon (12 year and 2017 Limited Edition)were 15000 yen each

        • @ynot1985:

Did you go to Kawasaki shop at kuromon?

I came back from japan 1 day ago. 12 year old yamazaki is extremely hard to find now and has been marked up in price. I only came across 1 bottle which was 16,000 Yen. I have a photo to prove it if you want.

12 year old yamazaki and 12 yr hibiki are very close to running out of stock all over japan and the world.

I go to Japan every year for the last 5 years and bring back whisky every time. I have brought back 12 year old yamazaki every year, apart from this trip. As it is hard to find and expensive IF you find it.

This year i only managed to get 17yr Hibiki (Y12,000) It was the last bottle and i found it on my last day. It was not on the shelf and the owner got it from behind a shelf.

        • Welcome to OzB! I believe you…just sad that stocks must have dwindled to the point that even domestic market is feeling the pinch

        • @Qmar:
source: Japanese whisky bar owner (Zeotrope in Shinjuku,Tokyo)

When Suntory first started producing Yamazaki and Hakushu, Japanese whisky wasnt popular. Sales werent that great so they reduced the amount they would produce, barrels decreased.

Japanese whisky then became very popular, and they didnt have the stock to supply the demand due to reducing how many barrels they were filling.

You should start to see alot more age statement yamazaki, hibiki and hakushu., as they started to produce and age alot of whiskys in the last few years.

    • Are you sure? I don't believe the price has doubled in 2 years. Perhaps you were looking at the standard yamazaki (distiller's reserve), not the 12 year. As for the price in Japan, the standard is 60 to 70AUD, but the 12 year is around 130-140.

Source: went to Japan in '13,'14,'17 and checked booze shops.

      • Are you sure? I don't believe the price has doubled in 2 years.

This is exactly what happened to Yamazaki 12year. Dan Murphy's went from $97.99 in 2015 to $199.99 in 2017.

        • Dude, that is bad. To be quite honest, I bought a 12 for myself when I went overseas recently, and I got 2 small 50ml bottles of it. Opened one, and it stank like ethanol. Tasted awful as well. Not happy. In my opinion, the Hakushu 12 is far superior on every front.

Crazy stuff. I used to drink this as the cheapy Japanese whisky, and only drink my 18 Year Old Yamazaki now and then as it cost me a couple of hundred duty free in NRT.
Now 18 year old is nearly $800!

Same thing with Hibiki 21. Only cost a couple of hundred a few years ago, and now it's close to $1k.

    Oh well.

Note that Dan's website has the inventory management of a two year old. If you place an order that it then turns out they don't have stock for expect an email asking you to choose something else. If you don't want something else be prepared to wait for a refund - I'm at 8 days since asking for a refund and still have nothing back. Not recommended.

Aldi are selling a 30 year old tomorrow for $99.99 (Glen Orrin 30yo Scotch Whisky)

    • Dan's is yet to find a 30 year old to price match it with.
Sure they don't stock the same item, yet their nearest 30 y/o is almost 5x the price!
