Breville BCG820BSS Smart Grinder Pro $179 (RRP $299) Delivered @ Myer

1030
ANNIVERSARY20

The old favorite of OZB coffee drinkers is back.

Yes, it's been cheaper in the past. I've been following this grinder since I missed the last deal about 2 months ago and this is by far the cheapest.

Cheapest online price in that period was $239, so it's a deal to me. Can be had for around $10 cheaper if you're in no rush and wait on an eBay deal.

Enjoy.

@1229 24/8/17. Currently showing as out of stock, but has replenished multiple times just prior to this.
Suggest you keep trying over the next few hours. IF no stock returns, ill close the deal.

@1432 24/8/17. web page showing out of stock currently, mobile page allowing you to add to cart. Might work, i don't want to buy two ;).

@1117 25/8/17. Mobile site still accepting deal. Please use this option if main page says out of stock.

Thanks OP. Likely the best deal atm on this grinder. Grabbed one for my old man for fathers day.

  • +3

Thanks OP. Sent it to the Mrs and she's just ordered for me for Father's Day!

  • Got this about 6 months ago for $200 (because I was too impatient to wait for a better deal as my old grinder broke). Awesome grinder for both espresso and filter, improved the taste of my coffee immensely compared to my old Sunbeam grinder.

    • Which Sunbeam grinder did you have? I have an EM0480.

      • So do I.. About 8 years old. Considering one of these at this price.
Would love a Sette 270 baratza, but it's a bit out of price range for now…

        • I just ordered the Breville. My Sunbeam is still working great although is 7 years old now. Might retire it to the office and keep the Breville for home!

      • I got it second hand, but I'm pretty sure I had an EM0480.

    • I had the EM0480 as others have just said.
These Brevilles are a ton better IMO. (I've got the previous generation)

The EM0480 sounds like a jet plane taking off compared to this.
It's still noisy just not as..

      Less mess.
      Do it !

BTW: Is there any way to include a Myer voucher as a code??? I have a $100 voucher I'd like to use towards the purchase..
NVM -> You can add a gift code in the payment section.
Update 2: D'oh, they don't accept the Cloes Myer Group physical cards by the look of it. Just their E-Cards..

    :@

  • Shows as $199 not $179 for me?

    • +1

      Enter the coupon code ANNIVERSARY20

    • Just checked the link and you are right it's $199 however when you add to your cart and enter the coupon "ANNIVERSARY20" it does come down to $179 and includes free delivery or you can click and collect if you prefer as well :-)

It is also worth checking whether the Breville outlet store has any of these in stock (located in Pyrmont Sydney). From memory they sell them for $139, but call and check, usually they aren't seconds but they don't hold much stock of these. The store is actually pretty good for picking up Breville stuff cheaply all the time.

  • Got this over the weekend paired with the EM7000 as part of the %15 off at TGG and so far really impressed !

  • Is it worth an upgrade from a EM480? Works well but makes a mess.

    • The EM480 looks messy and inconsistent even with this mod - https://youtu.be/JfqMlaTlr-Y

With the Breville, you get the same dose straight into the group head ready to tamp. 👌🏻

  • Shows out of stock online. bugger.

    • definitely in stock, currently.

      Try again.

NB: Some people reported issues using Apple devices for the coupon on the main thread. Also if the coupon rejects, check out as a guest if you are a regular customer to MYER.

edit- back out of stock a minute later. seems like stock is fluctuating a bit. ill edit the main title.

      • Thanks!! processed on my phone and worked first time. So weird. Will definitely try that next time I think I missed a bargain on here.

  • Silly question but I have a Mazzer Mini Manual which can get messy and have inconsistent fills. The auto memory functions of this Breville seems appealing on Youtube, would you sell your Mazzer and purchase this if in my situation?

    • I'm happy with my Breville but I'll swap it for your Mazzer any day! The Mazzer is a different class of grinder. Flat burrs, better grounds and likely to last much longer.

  • Got one for my auntie. But only just;

Checkout was a battle- first it wouldn't allow FF to add to cart. 'Out of stock'

In another browser i added two fine. But then at checkout, it 'couldn't transact right now' or something like that. Reduced my order to 1 only, and it completed.

No wonder Myer is in such grave trouble. If they can't even operate an online shop in this day and age, how can they run all those bricks and mortar ones? Looks like they gave all their business to eBay and friends in order to satisfy brain-dead investors demanding dividends, or did they repeatedly mismanage their business strategy and ops budgets?

    Good deal, thanks OP!

  • Wanted to check with others as to what coffee/espresso machine do you guys pair this grinder with? I drink my coffee black - espresso with some ice. Currently using the Nespresso machine. It is decent but would like some recommendation to upgrade in the near future. Is there any way I can try the coffee from AUD500+ machine before I buy? I am not sure whether it is worth the upgrade… my current nespresso machine is about $120. If I upgrade, i am looking at around $700/800 mark. Confused! I really like my coffee but…

    • +1

For you, the Breville infuser would pair really well. It's an excellent machine, and if you aren't frothing milk there's little need for anything more expensive unless you want the grinder built in like it is with the higher model, BES870.

BES920 gives you the big frother but no grinder and costs a lot more. I have this, but have had all the others over the years, inc. modified Saecos, Gaggias and others.

The Breville's are great- very reliable and good value- and brilliant, compact designs. Something to do with their (Aussie?) design team. I say this having repaired many different brands, and knowing how they are all built.

Only way to try is really to take it home and get set up. That will take a few grinds and a few pours. Once you get the grind right, the pour builds a decent crema in the correct time-frame and you just R&R every day. Very easy, and when you change your beans you adjust your grinder to suit. This grinder is great as it is easy to avoid a mess and the adjustments over grind and time are accurate and reliable. Worry not, though -there is no way the Nestle coffee compares, let alone match a fresh and controlled brew.

I use mine with a Rancilio Silvia.

Any machine with a 9 bar pump and good temperature stability with freshly ground beans from a good local roaster will produce a much more flavourful shot than your Nespresso (though it may take quite a few practice shots to get your grind settings, dosing and tamping right).

      • +1

Silvia and smart grinder owner here too. 👍🏻

        • +1

likewise ! got a V3 with all upgrades to a V4. Also mods: PID, preinfuse button and pressure gauge :)
great little machine. Would love a dual boiler for more than 2 coffees though.

        • @lethalmoney: I believe I have the v3… v4 had the screw in element did it not? did you have to buy a whole new boiler to make the upgrade?

I installed a pressure gauge ages ago (though It's hidden inside the body). I've been thinking about putting in a PID and some sound/vibration dampening inside the body too. Did you get a PID kit from auber or just buy parts on ebay?

        • +1

          @simulacrum:

PID is from Dealextreme. It's not AS good as the auber kits, but it works. setting it up was confusing, to say the least. IT went pop on me after 6 months (literally), so i've replaced it with the same one. It was all installed by previous owner.
          Its the entire V4 boiler

If you're really into black coffee, but you don't necessarily need it to be espresso then there is a whole industry roasting coffees for use in cones (hario v60, kalita wave, chemex, clever coffee dripper, etc), aeropresses, french presses, etc. The coffee is basically black drip coffee, but the quality is out of this world compared to old school percolators. One of the best parts is of the whole thing is that the equipment required is dirt cheap compared to buying a big espresso machine - we're talking ~$50 for an aeropress or cone filter.

This grinder is pretty good for espresso but it's also very versatile so it can also do a very good job grinding coarsely for filter coffees which are definitely worth checking out.

      • I've recently upgraded from an old school percolator to an aeropress with a manual hand grinder, great for travel but pain in the arse using regularly.

The Aeropress is amazing, and I've been keeping an eye out for this deal!

Just snagged one myself, def still in stock at 6.30pm, good work guys.

        • Would love to know your thoughts (and others) on the best setting to use on the Breville BCG820BSS for an Aeropress?

        • @Martyr01: I have the previous generation smart grinder so this may not be entirely useful, but I'm currently using it set near the "F" in FILTER or a click to the left near "GER" in PLUNGER. Works for v60, kalita and aeropress. Depending on the bean I could go a few clicks either way from there.

With the aeropress, I suggest you just go as fine as possible while still being able to press the plunger with only a moderate force. If the grind is too fine you have to push too hard and the paper filters get strained. A lighter touch is better. From there you can modulate the taste with timing parameters (bloom + steep times).

  • Any deals on BES920? My 2nd machine has gone low pressure when extracting and is out of warrenty.. Not sure if its worth repairing??

    • It is seldom hard to do, take care getting to grips with the pipe fasteners and plastic clips and bits when disassembling. Sometimes there is a blockage, a pipe has come off, or the pump is bad. Most things can be easily checked- just be sure to avoid electrocuting yourself if you are not so familiar*. There are plenty of how-tos around on the Internet to arm yourself with the requistite knowledge*.

      • Do not try this at home, leave it to a professional and spend your life making the lawyers happy by spending all the money you would otherwise have saved/landfill created.
      • I have had it opened in the past, replaced solonoid gasket.. just dont want to go spending couple of hundred on new pump and bits to find it still not working..

Any repairers that actually can be trusted to do a good job for a fair price around sydney?

        • Will cost more to get someone to repair it than most are prepared to spend.

Pumps are usually cheap, but the manufacturers often charge stupid prices. Ask at a decent machine vendor about repairers- I don't know any. Search by part and model online, check places like coffeesnobs.com.au for info, parts or links.

I can still see stock available online. In fact, I just got 1 3 mins ago.

    Well done OP.

    • +1

you're very welcome fellow coffee lover :)

  • How does this compare against the coffee grinder that's built into the Barista Express? Wondering if I should upgrade my grinder

    • +1

The burr setup is the same as the BES870, so no difference really

      • Thanks for saving me from the disappointment!

    • The Smart Grinder Pro can grind both finer and coarser than the Barista Express according to this vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLkXRz4gRXc

EDIT: also you can adjust the burrs settings on the newer Smart Grinder "Pro" whereas the Barista Express is like the older "Smart Grinder" which needs a shim kit to adjust it finer than stock settings.

  • Does anyone have the Anniversary code email that they could please share via pm? The codes don't work in-store but the email with a barcode will. Thanks!

I can buy 179 7eleven coffees for this and don't have to pay for beans, machine, water or electricity.

    • +3

You could also drink dirty water from a puddle for the rest of your life for nix… let's stay on topic.

I have a mate that worked at a 7eleven. I could tell you some stories about how those coffee machines are maintained that would make you never want to drink a coffee from there again

  • +1

    Thanks. Grabbed one!

  • would this be suitable for someone who drinks 1 possibly 2 cups of coffee (long black) per day

    • +1

      Err, of course. 😉

  • This vs Oracle touch auto grind?

    • I don't know the specifics of the oracles internal grinder, as I'd never buy a combo unit.
However, unless the grinder has failed, I would say you would be close to replacing like for like.

  • Yup, just bought via mobile. No issues. $179 delivered as couldn't click and collect to Hobart.

Was only noticing how my BCG800 was playing up this morning so perfect timing.

  • Thanks OP.
Been waiting for a deal on one of these for a while!

    • +1

Enjoy :) . Mines already being shipped, so expect it soon.

  • How fine can this grinder grind?

    • It pairs with a Silvia from all reports. The Silvia requires very fine grind, so on that alone; you're safe.

It has standard dial and burr adjustment to get even finer.

      • that's good to hear. I've been looking a long time for something that can grind my minerals. Manually grinding them has been rather tedious.

  • Thanks OP

Didn't realise I needed this until I saw the special and features :-)

No problem with stock level at midday Friday

    • +1

No problems, thanks for the update on stock.

Deal is still live, mate just purchased.

  • Purchased one the other day. I have been waiting for a deal on this grinder to reappear for a while. It arrived yesterday and I really like it. Thanks for posting this deal!

Glad you're enjoying it. Loving mine !

  • Damn, got me!!!! Just purchased. Anyone aware of any mad deals on the bes920ss coffee machine ?? Thanks ;)

    • Not currently. Keep waiting :)

      • Is that a strategic hint …?

        • I have no affiliation, just been watching both items with intent for months :)
