I am not going to change any minds but, for me this is way better then any Bluetooth speaker of this size and packs way more features, and so the 139$ price to me is fair. Any cheaper i am sure they would be cutting corners on the quality.
I completely agree, although since it is fixed (i.e. requires a power point), it reduces it's Bluetooth speaker ability.
As an example, the capabilities of the home are reduced significantly when you do not have chromecasts/IOT/home automation devices already.
Believe me I want to jump in on it, but given that it is basically a phone application with a speaker, severely reduces the value in my opinion. Perhaps if it came with a few chromecasts both audio and video and smart power plugs and bulbs, that would be a better buy at $150-$200.
Bonus Offer from JB Hi-Fi
Buy a Google Home, for $199, and get either Chromecast or Chromecast Audio for only $10.

@timoth: Yes, that's a single chromecast either audio or visual. For $210 total.
All I'm saying, is that if you have an android phone, then you have the Google Assistant already. So it's hard to justify spending $210 to get a device that has the same google assistant, but is hooked up to a speaker, and isn't portable, and offers additional features to the free application on your phone. So the only way I would spend $200+ on this, is if it offered more of a package for home automation, to actually make use of the Google Home's features.
I agree with what you are saying, but it is a start at least.
@timoth: Meh, better do Harvey Norman you get spare change for the Chrome Cast Audio http://www.harveynorman.com.au/google-home.html
@ozchobie: I did that deal, but now i am thinking of just getting Google Homes, we are building our first house and i was planning to have speakers in the ceiling connected via chromecast, but now i am thinking i can get a better experience with having say 4-5 around the house.
Edit: words
can these function as a wifi mesh system? or do you need something else for that?
I don't believe so. These connect to your wifi, and they are not a router.
Just a smart speaker,
more State Surveillance. Yes please.
24/7 wifi. Yes please. No health effects…
Makes comment on public forum over the internet..
Free speech…while it still lives.
Tin foil mate.
@ozy:
Tin foil hatters were 100% right. That we still see responses like yours in this advanced age of State Trojans signed into law speaks volumes about how much work there has yet to be done on the eve of the death of free speech and privacy.
@cheepwun: Yet on a public forum where you are either on a smartphone/tablet or sitting at computer, with your Ozbargain location set to Melbourne, you're happy to warn people about being monitored and health effects of this specific device?
Really?
Now you're going on about free speech? I think you're missing my point…
@ozy:
The only people allowed to make statements about health effects of wifi and the fascist police state are those who quit using modern tech in all its forms (cold turkey), and those who are anonymous 100% of the time…day and night…sending messages from their cave rather than their spyware-infiltrated device?
I guess this is the point you were trying to make, in-between the tinfoil hat comment. Tinfoil-hatters who were completely right decades ago, incidentally…and who could just as easily see where this was heading….as easily as drinking water…because we have been here before.
Tinfoil-hatters who everyone should be thanking today. So that those with ears and eyes can take some small steps to live better…in small steps…(or large ones)…when their lives have depended on it.
@cheepwun: So you quit modern tech? or was your first comment not a statement wrapped in sarcasm?
I guess I just see no point saying bullets kill while shooting a gun at your head.
@ozy:
sarcasm.
people can take measures to reduce exposure….and remove themselves from surveillance several ways if they want to…so they have something resembling privacy if they want it.
The first step is knowing what is going on today. And what giving away your data means to these crooks. What it means for your basic human rights too. Because it's all about totalitarian control over the slaves.
You don't have to go caveman.
@cheepwun: Good luck in life cheepwun.
Take it on foil first and you'll be safe mate.
All the best.
@ozy:
luck favours the prepared…
Got the foil, thanks. That's all you've got…what a shame.
@cheepwun: takes wun to know wun ;)
Any difference in buying US version over AUS version?
It works in the exact same way as an Australian edition. All you need is, a power adapter and set your preferences to Australian & you are done.

I feel like $80-90 is the sweet spot for this. Once it reaches that, I will jump in. $139 for a speaker that does exactly what my phone already does (and most others phones already does) seems like a stretch.
