Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ - HD Media Player - $63 at HT Website [Expired]

450

Hi guys,
Pretty good deal for a branded media player which can play H.264/AVC and stream internet/network. Most major IT online stores are selling it for over $160 so it is a great bargain!

Good review here:

I ordered one so you should be quick! :)

  • and the hdd is not part of this?

    • Correct.

  • is there something i'm missing? it seems to be $52 here. http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search.cgi?q=Seagate+FreeAge…

    • Out of stock, and it's the Theater, not Theater+

      • thanks.

  • newer model STCEM201-RK. Built in HDMI and can play H264…

  • I've heard the UI isn't the most user friendly.

    • your right was terrible before firmware update, and i am still looking for where to set the video settings

  • +1

i brought it home today , interface seems good after the firmware update, seems to want to reboot when browsing youtube or online stuff, a little annoying hasnt rebooted paying movies etc.

Its pretty small though and silent which is nice

The theater+ does 1080p and has more file format support and ethernet

    • Does it play 1080p MKV files smoothly & support Dolby Digital 5.1 & DTS over HDMI? Thanks.

Atm, I just play everything through my PS3 from flash drives & discs - I'm thinking if it's worth getting this so I don't have to burn discs & convert videos.

      • I actually bought this for my brother to sit next his ps3, havent played mkv yet but will do later on tonight and let you know

Not sure about the sound, not an audiophile so not sure how to test the support for Dolby etc , any help :)?

        • why would you buy this to sit next to a PS3????
With MKV2VOB freeware the PS3 can playback most X.264/H.264 ever needed

But if this plays H.264 with ease at this price,

BUY IT NOW ITS A BARGAIN

          • @[Deactivated]: nice one! will be testing it on on the ps3 this weekend then, thanks

      • MKV2VOB for MKV PS3 playback

  • It supports AC3 so Dolby digital should be fine… I will test the sound on my hometheatre once it arrives

    • Any ideas on how to set the video settings ? when it arrives :)

      • the remote has a button that opens the settings, you can navigate around and it is pretty self explanatory.

I bought 2 the other day. It seems on-par (although larger and probably slightly less nice than the WDTV) but it is very nice.

        • Not its not , there is no video setting in the menu pretty obvious about the setting menu thanks

okay worked it out , in the settings menu there is a left and right menu aswell as the list up and down

  • mikinoz/zeus - can you use it as a network hard drive? i.e. can you map it and access files via explorer?

    • Not so far and there is not network settings in the menu aside form setting ip etc

  • hey can anyone find the drive that fits into the slot… staticice seems to only show the goflex version which doesn't go into the slot

  • hey, can I use wireless dongle with it ?

    • +3

Some selected adapter work according to this:

      http://forums.seagate.com/t5/FreeAgent-Theater/Wi-fi-adapter…

      • cheers mate, sounds good.

      • Bloody awesome , i used my noontec wireless n adater and it worked straight away , thank you :)

these are approx 30 from mwave or elsewhere

        • Hey mate, can you stream HD videos over the network with wireless dongle? :) can you browse connected usb drive from the computer ?

          • @mirovich: cant browse anything from computer, not sure about the streaming yet!

from the unit you can browse a shared folder

  • To fit in the slot, you should buy a Seagate one (FreeAgent Go portable hard drive)
In the review they mentioned that you can use wireless dongle but I reckon you should go to Seagate web for which ones it supports

  • +1

Looks good, seems to play MKV's and outputs DD and DTS audio….

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tb3ADl83Xbk&feature=fvw

  • ive decided to hold off myself, for the only reason that you need to sync the files with your windows machine (using software). It would be very cool if you could use it as an ftp network drive too.

    • you can open a shared folder from pc, or stream from media server, but alas the network function is not so good.

the noontec v8 pro is really good for using as a network drive and as a bit torrent client although at least 70.00 on top of this price

  • 5% pricematch at officewrks. This model lists on there web site for $149. They also have the older model with different/less specs for $79

    • Problem with the 5% match is that no Officeworks (in NSW at least) have stocks…

  • Bought one :)
It's definitely a bargain at this price.

  • I guess Seagate is clearing out their stocks before google-TV and the like hit the market at a similar pricepoint ;)

    • +1

i think there are clearing them because the drive thats compatible ie the freeagent go , is end of life and no other drive docks in the unit

having said that usb hdd or usb stick is no problem

      • Yeah I agree, that too :)

  • good point… but for this price, i'm happy to use it in 1 or 2 years til google tv being cheap :)

  • Does the drive have to be FAT32 format or can it handle NTFS drives? If it's the latter, and it can handle MKV, then this is a great device.

    • SUPPORTED FILE SYSTEMS

      • NTFS, FAT, FAT32, HFS+
  • This is awesome for me! I have a 500GB freeagent go just like the one mentioned so it will work perfectly for me.

  • just bought one, first time i made an impulse purchase like this, sooo cheap, i bought a WD live for $188 the other day, but need another one, so i can watch in 3 rooms now :)

    • How does it compare to the WD TV Live mate? (i have one too)

      • heheh, i mean i just ordered online :)

ill let ya, know, but i recon it will be fine,…..

there are lots of cheaper units out there, but i hear they struggle to do 1080P high profile,…

The Live plays my 6GB 40min rips fine and can even do DB Isos

  • dont think it does TS files.

  • Cool! saved $15 on delivery by selecting business center pick up!

    Cheers!

    • i thought about that, but my times not worth it really,…. maybe im just lazzy now ??

    • Damn, wish they have store in nsw :(

      • They do, North Ryde!

        • I've been working at North Ryde for 1 year and I never know there is ht store near the station :). I canceled shipping and will pick it up during this week :)
          Cheers mate :)

          • @mirovich: No worries :), best thing about pick up is you can do cash etc on pickup instead of paying before.

            • @Mikinoz: Yes indeed, saved $10, its not an issue for some ppl but its a fortune for a student :)

    • I can't find the pick up option in my shopping cart. I have gone through the whole process short of confirming the purchase. Am I missing something? I can see that there is stock in Osborne Park.

      • Actually, I called the customer service :) and a ht guy fixed up everything for me :)

        • Thanks amir aljaberi, that worked:)

  • Nice find - I've ordered two :-)
    Thanks for posting this bargain.

  • Anyone else have this problem when i press browse from the setting menu when in the home screen it reboots ?

  • What's the biggest size Freeagent Go drive that can fit in the slot? Would the 1TB drive fit? Or would you have to go with the 750?

    • looks like 500gb although should be able to do higher as it is only limited by the interface and the drives are the same i beleive

      http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/datasheet/disc/ds_fa_theater…

      • Is there much room in terms of height for the drive once it's plugged in?

According to this spec sheet, the 750, 880 and 1TB drives are 0.34in bigger in terms of height.
        http://www.seagate.com/docs/pdf/datasheet/disc/ds_fa_go.pdf

        • looks like you can go as high as you want, as long as connector is same place

          • @Mikinoz: True, but the height of the casing might restrict the larger models because the 1TB drive for example is much bigger and probably won't fit.

            • @atlas: it fits because you can pull off lid like thing. (2 parts)

              the 1TB just looks weird

  • Thanks for ordering with Harris Technology
Due to the high quantity of internet orders placed today for the Seagate Freeagent Theatre HDD+ , unfortunately at this stage we can not guarantee stock availability for your order.
I will get back to you soon to confirm if we will be able to fulfil the order.
Please do not hesitate to call if I can be of any further assistance.

    • Same :(

    • Same here….seems HT do not have live stock system, pity seemed like a good deal. Luckily got the email before I placed the order for an overpriced 500g hdd to slot into it…phew.

    • +1

There are some really interesting products due for release in this product space - the interface on the new WD looks really slick; http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1283694 and it has a built-in 1TB drive at the same basic cost of adding the drive (yes it’s in $US but they are basically @ parity now).

If you missed out, there are alternatives, eg; The WD mini has been offered at less than $50 on a number of occasions (One price quoted was $36 http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/24896) and although it doesn't offer identical functionality it may offer the features some people require at a lower price point.

    • I picked one of these up from the Fyshwick Business Centre at around 2pm. It looked like they had around 20 left on the floor. I ordered online and then had to call because I couldnt change the delivery address to pick up from the business centre.

The guy said they were selling fast. I reckon if you're worried they'll run out of stock, call an HT store direct.

Good to have things working straight out of the box, no fiddling around

      • Update firmware ;)

    • Should've ordered one when I saw this last night but thought that I'm ok with the 110d which i bought for $76 last week. Then had second thoughts that this would have been nice for the kids' room and since it's dirt cheap, why not…. oh well, something else will come up…

  • how does this compare to the Astone AP-110D?

    • I wondered about the same, so I did some research.

For me Astone AP-110D is superior because it plays rmvb files and displays Asian subtitles. But if you have no need for those features, Seagate is cheaper.

      • Actually, I was going to buy Astone but when I saw the problems in Astone forum, I changed my mind :). Besides, the normal price for Seagate is $160 :)

        BTW, it supports rmvb:
        Technical Specifications
The Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ HD media player now supports even more Audio/Video and sound formats including MPEG-1, MPEG-2 (VOB/ISO), MPEG-4 (DivX® /Xvid formats), DivX HD, Xvid HD, AVI, MOV, MKV, RMVB, AVC HD, H.264, WMV9, VC-1, M2TS, TS/TP/M2T, JPEG files up to 20 megapixels, BMP, GIF, PNG and TIFF. Audio formats supported include 5.1 channel surround sound, where available, and popular digital audio formats including: AAC, MP3, Dolby Digital, DTS, ASF, FLAC, WMA, LPCM, ADPCM, WAV and OGG.

        • You are right. I just ordered one!

  • I just brought it, paid $10 extra for delivery, Damm I am getting lazy…lol

so it looks better and is $25 cheaper than the astone one

  • I reserved one over the phone but when I got there was told that they had sold out - he old found out after processing my order.

Apparently some douche bag bought 10 units alone. So if you see any on eBay, that's probably where they came from.

Anyways the dude said he could get some in for me from interstate so I've got 2 being delivered.

  • Interesting that they actually ahve the normal free agent theater in their clearance section which still costs more, yet this one isn't in the clearance section , was wondering whether they messed up the prices but after reading the comments I think I'll be grabbing one of these beasts.

    • typical for HT

  • does anyone get a sort of change in the color of the background (the blue sort of changes shades) when they click the youtube button on the main page (updated firmware), and anyone getting the unit freezing when indexing??

also the images and vids look pretty grainy compared to viewing through laptop with vga cable (i've hooked this up using hdmi cable - any idea what i should set the resolution to under settings for a samsung HD lcd (not full hd).

    • i got that until i changed the screen reslution to 1080p 60hz my samsung is not full hd but the settings seem to work nicely

  • Thank you Zeus. You are a God. Been looking out for something like this for new TV.

  • Thanks for voing my 1st post lol :)

  • cant find it any more looks like its been removed/sold out?

next closest ones are 80 bux, not sure if they are the +

    http://www.ht.com.au/part/Y4094-FreeAgent-Theater-digital-AV…

    • Not HDMI, ethernet or 1080p, therefore not +

  • I think all sold out :( The link has been removed!

Was a great first post well done!

  • Just got this email

    Hello Rick,
Thank you for placing your order with Harris Technology.
Regrettably, part # X5251 (Seagate Freeagent Theatre HDD+) was a limited stock item and is now discontinued, no stock left. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. Please advise how you would like to proceed.

    • No big loss. I'll just get the Astone then.

    • -1

I received the same email this morning as well. What sort of system continues to process orders when stock has run out? I had also placed orders I for a Seagate Freeagent Go 500GB Drive as well as the Noontec Wireless Dongle to use with this unit after I had successfully placed the order with HT.
      Not impressed.

      • Blame this guy on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Seagate-FreeAgent-Theater-HD-Media-Pl…

Started with 10 units yesterday, and obviously acquired them under this deal because his 'warranty' runs till October 2011.

I feel sorry for whoever is buying them!

        • great find, whom ever missed out should make an offer for $63

seriously we should all offer 63 bux…kind of like an, "I know what you did"

        • +1

          Blame this guy

Presumably he's the guy sitting around munching on his 55+ free cadbury bars…..

@andy19363: How rude i sent them a email saying this was not good enough and they sent me the same identical email back which i replied quite sternly to saying i would take it to ACCC etc

            this is their reply
            Hello ,

Due to greater than expected response, we have regrettably sold out of this item and we are unable to fulfil your order. Unfortunately we are unable to source it from any supplier around the country either.

According to the “estimated stock availability” advertised in our website, the stock is allocated after the internet order has been verified as valid. All orders are consecutively fulfilled according to the time they are placed. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.

Please advise if you wish to cancel or maybe add new items to the order.
Please do not hesitate to call if I can be of any further assistance.

            • @Bigsta: just cancel it… they probably dont have any more stock so not much more they can do…

            • -1

@Bigsta: Please dont add peoples names here , Jose is just doing his job how would you feel if we publicised your details when you are not directly responsible.

Jose handles a lot of my orders and he tends to do a lot of work for little reward as per the bargain hunter thing, he has never once complained to me or had a bad attitude!
