Bitdefender Free edition has no more updates for XP or Vista Operating Systems. Any alternatives?

I use a XP netbook as a logger for recording energy usage and uploading to PVOutput. Yesterday a message popped up that the free edition of Bitdefender would be no longer be supported with updates on XP OS. The option was to upgrade to the paid version for XP and Vista with 6 months free.

So now I'm looking for a free alternative that supports XP. Are there any recommended that will still be supported on XP OS?

  • Don't connect to the internet and you'll be safe

  • +3

You'd be better served upgrading the operating system to one that doesn't have hundreds of unpatched security holes.

    • Yeah, your right. I've decided to go with Scrimshaw's suggestion below.

  • Comodo is free and does virus and firewall and is pretty good with getting updates regularly https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVIhXwFJXMg - commodo vs wanna cry

  • antiviruses won't cover the security holes left by an unsecured operating system. There are numerous exploits that can be done to an XP system which an antivirus cannot prevent, many of these exploits accumulated since 2014 (three years ago)

It would be easier to just upgrade to Windows 10, and if you don't want to pay money for it, you don't have to either

Windows 10 will continue to work pretty much forever without a product key, you just can't set any personalisation options or change the background. You also won't be able to use apps from the app Market.

    • Thanks Scrimshaw, I think that is the best solution. As the netbook will just be sitting on a shelf with the lid closed an unactivated Windows 10 will suit my purpose just fine.

  • These types of programs provide a false sense of security these days. Not as useful as they used to be. Run Windows 10 if you can have plenty of safety features built in. If not try a Linux distro. If you have a basic understanding of dodgy emails, attachments and do not visit dodgy websites you should be fine. Also get an ad blocker in your browser.

  • Time to upgrade your computer.

Free anti virus isn't going to be any good. I'm quite shocked you haven't upgraded…

    • Yes, I probably got a bit lazy and didn't give it much thought as it has been so reliable over the past few years running 24/7.
