        M.2 42mm (2242) SATA III Internal SSD

The smaller square-ish shaped SSD cards used in some tablets and laptops. Like this

        • btw do all m.2 ssds use B+M key? or are there any that use diff configurations?

    • +1

Me too. Waiting for a deal on the 2242 sized m2.

    • +1… in the market for a 22*42 SSD myself

      • +1

I believe they were referring to the SSD, not the code.

if he doesnt intend to use it/buy this. im happy to use it rather than go to waste

Any SATA versions for the people with old desktops? (Me)
    Would mSATA work?

  • which one is better M.2 SSD or normal SSD. Can i install it on recently purchase Dell SFF9020? sorry for the dump question.. not a computer literate. Thanks

    • M.2 is faster don't have your PC specs… depends on mobo. Needs to have a M.2 connection.

      • +5

If it's a SATA chipset M.2 then it's no faster than a 2.5" SATA SSD. Which the Samsung 850 EVO M.2 is a SATA based M.2 which is why these are cheap.

Read and write specs are as followed.

        "Sequential Read Speed
Up to 540 MB/s Sequential Read * *Performance may vary based on system hardware & configuration
        Sequential Write Speed
Up to 500 MB/s Sequential Write * *Performance may vary based on system hardware & configuration"

The model in the deal is m.2 sata, so should be the same speeds as a normal ssd. Only m.2 nvme SSDs are faster than normal ones. M.2 is much smaller but requires a special motherboard port, look up your pc specs to see whether it has an available m.2 slot.

      Hey WXYZ,

If your Motherboard has an M.2 slot, it's always best to get a M.2 SSD and boot off that Flash Drive.
Even if its a M.2 Sata, the motherboard usually recognises the M.2 slot as the first directory, so its a smoother process.
On top of that, you might actually get a slightly better performance from M.2 Sata as opposed to 2.5in Sata drive-connection.

Now, seeing that you have the older/budget business PC (Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF)… I know that computer doesn't have an M.2 slot. If you want an M.2 slot, you can add it, by using a Low-Profile bridge/connector which will connect the M.2 drive to your PCIe slot. It works, maybe a little clunky, but the worst part is you would've used up your only PCIe slot.
Which means you can't have a dedicatedGPU in there like a GTX 750<->GTX 1050 Ti.

Older machines can't boot from a PCI-e bridge like this, can they? Cheap bridges bridge PCI-e SSDs to PCI-e slots, or have a SATA connector on the card to bridge m2 SATA to regular motherboard SATA connector, not m2 SATA -> PCIe ?

        ie https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2-Slots-Adapter-Card-of-M-ke…

Is there such a thing as bridge that appears as a PCI-E SATA controller to the BIOS, allowing it to be selected as a boot device?

        • +1

I've heard of people having success with it.
Mainly those who had some office machine and wanted to take advantage of the EVO/PRO sales they had in the past.

But you're right, it wasn't designed for it.
And there's little to no support for it on cheapo OEM boards.
So it does work in theory, but practically may not be possible, or possible through exploits (ie Custom BIOS, etc etc). Really is a case of YMMV.

Tempting but holding out until I can find a really good deal on something a bit larger. I found my 250gb SSDs get full in a flash with >60gb game sizes nowadays!

    • Same. I even have to manage my 500gb 840. I wish these SSD's would get to 1tb/2tb already.

  • I'm out of the loop with computers, how/where do you connect the M.2 SSD to in a laptop or PC?

Last HDD I connected was a SATA.

    • +1

Usually to a header on the motherboard. That's how one of mine is connected to my desktop

      • Thanks!

It's been years since I opened up a PC.

I just buy them pre-configured rather than assemble them these days. PC of choice in the last 8 years have been the Dell Optiplex's as I don't play games.

I should see if my Dell Latitude has one of these slots, the SSD in it is only 256gb and I'd like to expand it.

        • you could get a m2 -> sata converter if you don't have a slot. Also, if your latitude has an optical drive, they have sata connectors, so you can just take out the optical and put in an SSD (with a $10 tray from ebay).

  • Can someone confirm my motherboard can support this? This is my motherboard

Is it the MSATA next to the cmos battery?

    • +2

Actually dw - I don't think it supports it.

  • Any deals on either the 500gb or 1tb versions? please

  • Just a dumb question, can i buy this one to replace for the 128gb ssd on my macbook air 2015?

  • hi, is this for pc or laptop?

  • got an old hp compaq 8300 sff with sata/ssd. was looking to add another ssd to boot up mac os via hackintosh. will the pc support this m.2 ssd?
