Server Migration - Comment on Any Post-Migration Issue Here

Update: Looks like the server has migrated but got quite a few issues. I will try to sort these out — urgent ones hopefully during the day, otherwise this evening. (scotty)

Sorry about the late notice. Been planning this server move for a week already and looks like tonight is the night to do it.

  • Date: 21 Oct 2010
  • Time: 12:30AM
  • Move From: Linode in Fremont California
  • Move To: Crucial Paradigm in Sydney
  • Downtime: Hopefully less than 30 minutes

It's OzBargain and 95% of the visitors coming here are Australians. However for the last 2 years OzBargain has been hosting on a server in US (well, because it's cheap :) but the nightmare of "under-sea cable being cut by earth quake, OzBargain goes off-line for a week and bargain hunters in Australia go crazy and become zombies" has been haunting me lately. No, just kidding but I think it is time for me to pay a bit more to get a decent service in Australia instead.

So I am going to take a short nap now, take the kids to wee, take the server down, copy the database over, point the DNS to the new location, and go to sleep. Hopefully the site will still be in tact by the time I wake up tomorrow. And this forum topic will be used for reporting any site-level issues after the migration.

Scotty, I noticed a few issues after the server migration.

    1) The commenting is disabled for any new deal/forum post made after the migration.

For example, the last three posts:

    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/32920
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/32921
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/32922

The comment box is just not there.

This doesn't affect the older post made prior to the migration, as the comment box is still visible.

    2) The search function doesn't seem to be working for me either. I'm getting the error:

You must include at least one positive keyword with 3 characters or more.

The keyword is definitely more than 3 characters and more than 1 word. And I noticed the 'advanced search' also disappeared.

    3) On this wiki page, I'm getting the errors:

    Writing /var/www/www.ozbargain.com.au/data/wiki/cache/4/49c80ea8f1b2be9e97991cb4245d1944.i failed
Unable to save cache file. Hint: disk full; file permissions; safe_mode setting.
    Writing /var/www/www.ozbargain.com.au/data/wiki/cache/4/49c80ea8f1b2be9e97991cb4245d1944.xhtml failed

And the 'edit' link on the wiki page seems to be missing.

  • I knew it!

Well I need to go to work now but I'll see what I can fix today.

Edit: The main issue seems to be lack of testing after the upgrade of the entire stack (my fault :). Most notably PHP 5.2 to PHP 5.3.

  • Also can't vote for any of the latest deals. It says:

    Cannot Vote on This Deal
Voting not allowed on deals that have comments closed.

      Commenting should be fixed now.

REALLY have to go to work now, but please post any issue on this thread (I'll make it sticky).

      • Fixing the commenting also seems to have fixed the voting problem. Good stuff.

  • Seems faster now. Thanks Scotty.

  • Scotty, a user says that comments have been deleted here

    • and i can confirm i have also noticed posts disappearing.

      • Will investigate tonight.

  • I have noticed that some posts cannot be replied to as there is no reply link.

I think I have only seen it when trying to reply to posts that are replying to another post

Fox example these posts cannot be replied to

    • That's an intentional limitation of 4 replies, otherwise the replies get squashed.
