  • Well this Apple TV sure has come down a lot in price.

  • +4

because new one is 4k and hdr

Just like the the Xbox One S.

Anyone who buys this it the Xbox is an idiot.

      • +9

Just like the the Xbox One S.
Anyone who buys this it the Xbox is an idiot.

In English please, you know I don't speak Spanish.

      • -1

Anyone who buys this it the Xbox is an idiot.

or perhaps uses media sources like itunes or apple based apps.

        • -3

Nothing like locking yourself into an ecosystem.

        • +4

@PainToad: As opposed to my Xbox games that I can play on my Playstation or mobile phone? I see. Or the media that I've legitimately bought from the Microsoft store that I can use on my Mac desktop or Linux laptop?

      • +4

Very different devices, but hey, don't let that stand in the way of a bit of blind fanboyism!

        • -3

Fanboyism? I use an Android phone, a Windows Tablet, just brought a 15" MacBook TB (used Macs since I was a kid) and have an Xbox One.

I'm not a fanboy to any particular company.

The Xbox One just presents better value.

        • @PainToad: Vesus what? Not an Apple TV because it's a different product.

        • -3

          @unique452:

Both stream media and play games.

        • @unique452: very similar products if you just compare the Apple TV set of functions. In addition to that the Xbox plays games, I guess if you never play games then the Apple TV is probably still slightly better value.

        • +2

@PainToad: So do mobile phones, I would not consider them the same or direct competitors.

        • -3

          @unique452:

Those are not promoted as predominantly TV connected devices. Whereas both the ATV and XBONE are.

        • @PainToad: Xbone is not promoted as a predominant video streaming device (well except Japan), and the AppleTV is not promoted as a predominant games system…. which is my point…

        • +2

@gravewax: I think a chainsaw and a Stanley knife are similar products if you look from far enough back, but I guess in agreement with your comment Microsoft is trying (and IMO not succeeding) in making a game-console-HTPC-tablet-computer-cloud-in-one. I still don't think their focus is the same. One is a media streamer adding the option of some games, the other is a game system trying to add media streaming.

Evaluate the products based on needs and primary use rather than saying something that's markedly different is a better choice because it offers ancillary function that might meet your needs and you're an idiot if you don't choose that option (not directing this comment at you, of course)

Note: I own ATVs, XBones and most other bits and pieces. I use them all, generally, for their primary design purpose and am happy with how they work.

        • -2

          @unique452:

MS heavily advertise the streaming capabilities.

Apple's product page states "The A10X Fusion chip provides a powerful platform for enjoying richer, more interactive games and apps."

        • +1

@PainToad: I think we're simply having two different conversations. I understand what you're saying but the conclusion you're drawing from it is, in my opinion, wrong

          @unique452:

          Have a good day :)

      • it idiot

  • +5

Expect it to fall further in the coming days.
    Great device though….

  • +1

Because the new one is magnitudes better…. who in their right mind can't wait a few days?

    • +2

Besides 4K, what is better about the new one?

      • +3

Apple TV 4K is powered by an Apple A10X chip, which delivers up to two times the CPU performance and up to four times the GPU performance compared to the previous-generation Apple TV.
        https://www.macrumors.com/2017/09/12/apple-announces-apple-t…

        • +11

But doesn't play stuff off USBs or MKV files.

        • 4X or 2X raw performance means nothing if that does not translate to better streaming quality output.
What is more important is the support for native HEVC decoding, 4K via HDMI 2.0 and 10 bit HDR that such powerful SoC is able to provide.

        • @YellowKnight: Use VLC remote play over WiFi for that

        • @YellowKnight: or just Airplay. Then you can play anything.

        • Probably worth waiting and paying the extra $40 for the 4K version given the performance boost.

        • @ozdesi: one has to weigh up what benefits buying a cheap shitty picture quality 4K TV plus this box brings.

        • +1

@YellowKnight: Infuse works like magic. It's amazing.

        • +2

          @YellowKnight:
It won't play from USB, but it will play any file off a network share with the right app.

        • @YellowKnight: Well not everyone is a pirate; besides, there's always ways around that.

        • @YellowKnight: infuse will, if you have a USB network share port on your router.

        • @smartazz104: I don't recall mentioning anything about piracy

        • @YellowKnight: not everyone is ripping their Blu Rays to mkv files…

        • @smartazz104: That sounds better

  • When the new 4K coming up.. why should anyone buy it

    • +3

If you don't have a 4K TV and don't want to fork out an additional $1,299 to make the new one worth it, this generation of Apple TV is perfect.

  • +2

i dont see the point of apple tv when there the Xiaomi Mi Box.

    • +4

There isn't, unless you are already invested in the Apple system and/or the app you require is only available on iOS.

    • Isn’t the mi box ass when it comes to Australian streaming apps integration? Apple are integrating a bunch of streaming apps soon. Not everyone wants to side load apps onto a mi box.

      • No idea i don't have one but $80 vs $250 (4k version) is a huge price difference.

Just wondering if there's any thing i don't know other then having the brand apple to make the price difference worth it.

        I use chromecast ultra.

        • I think the biggest problem is android tv is years behind Apple TV in Australia in terms of our of the box experience. The extra money will save you time in the long run and give your family the content they really want right now.

        • @AustriaBargain: Apple TV is for mostly genuine legal sources of media. Android Legal content is not 4k based pretty much at all.

  • -6

Geez… and I thought the Telstra TV remote was 'bare bones'. Where's the fwd/rew buttons?
Another Apple 'less is really less' product. lol

    • +3

i think you just swipe using the touchpad?

    • +1

You click on the left or right of the touchpad to go backwards or forwards by 15 second increments. To fast-forward or rewind further you can pause and then swipe to the exact position you want.

      • +1

        Mehhhh…
I guess I'm one of those people who likes lots of physical buttons.
        Harmony 650 remote FTW. :)

        • The nice thing about the Apple TV is that a lot of remotes work with it. Harmony remotes work, but even other remotes such as the remote that came with my 7 year old Sony TV works (Minus Siri functionality as it doesn't have a microphone). It's also nice to be able to control it with the Apple TV app or within Control Center on iOS 11 from your iPhone when no remotes are in reach. The Apple TV also supports HDMI-CEC so if your TV supports it and you have it configured correctly, you can even turn on and off your TV and Apple TV with any of your remotes.

If you're adventurous it's also possible to configure a Harmony Home Hub with Homebridge so you can do things like ask Siri to turn on your Apple TV, which can turn on both your Apple TV and TV.

        • @makebei:
Thank you for being a voice of reason… unlike the rest of the Apple fanboy rabble. :)

I know a lot of people think the Apple TV is brilliant, and they are probably right. However, unless foxtel bring out a Foxtel Now app for it (I have a better chance of winning lotto), it really doesn't give me anything more than all the other devices I have (none of which can be classed as all in one).

Spoken like one of the true iSheep.

        • Isheep. That's deep.

Did you think of that yourself?

        • @YellowDieselGolf:

          I didn't have to. It's a well known world wide fact. :p
          Run along, little sheepy.

        • @starionx:
You of course, realise the irony of regurgitating the same mindless insult you've read a thousand times before? You know, the insult about not thinking for yourself?

        • @YellowDieselGolf:

Yeah… kind of like being an iSheep.

          :D

    • VHS went out of favour 20 years ago, time to catch up.

Why is it that every single Apple related post needs to have Android fanboys dissing the product? I'm a happy user of both platforms, each have their up's and down's, but I'll be honest, you don't tend to see the same with Android devices (with Apple fanboys dissing Android).

    • The Apple fanboys are too busy looking for powerpoints to charge their phones.

      • +1

Nah the Android fanboys need validation with their choices. The crave the attention to light up their otherwise miserable lives.

        • I like Apple stuff. I just need more buttons and memory cards, that's all.

    • +2

You don't tend to see the same with Android devices (with Apple fanboys dissing Android).

Probably because they don't know how they work lol.

PS. Apple fan, will be buying the 4K apple TV lol

    • Yep. It also been with the NES/SNES Mini ("Pfft. You can download ROMs for free") and Google Home ("Watch out! The NSA are listening").

      I don't understand it.

  • Do u have a 4K tv for 4K Apple TV? lol

  • I use my smart TV and my chromecast quite a bit.
I only desire to be able to stream music from my iPhone to the TV.
Is apple TV my best/only option?

    • +1

      https://www.apple.com/au/airport-express/
Cant speak for the newer gen of product but I have a very old one of these still hooked up to my amp and working for streaming itunes.

    • I thought you can stream music from your iPhone to your TV through Chromecast? It's been awhile since I use my Chromecast (as I use my Apple TV), but thought it was possible.

      • Unfortunately it looks like you can only stream music from the iPhone music app to apple devices like Flattop linked :/

    • +1

There's an app that I'm aware of that should allow you to stream to your television without an additional device called "TV Assist"

      • My hero!

  • What does this have over a Chromecast?

  • Its currently unavailable in apple store online, so officeworks refused. Thanks though.

    • To update on the matter. I checked with Chadstone apple store for local stocks availability and discussed with officeworks and they agreed.

Apple store online currently shows unavailable due to website being upgrjaded for 4k pre order release tomorrow.

      Cheers and thanks OP!
