The HK 8/8 plus now appears to be the same model as the AU model.

  • Has anyone checked with DSE/Kogan that they are supplying HK stock as in the past, they source their phones from other countries as well and you may not necessary get a HK model. My old iPhone 5S from Kogan was a US model.

Delay in shipping could be a reason why it may not be a HK model as they may be getting their phones from another country first to HK before shipping it out.

    • No but going by last year people got HK version of iPhone 7 from DS Ebay when they offered 20% off.
I expect the same will happen with these ones. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/4053177/redir
It's pretty much identical deal as last year but in 8/8Plus models.

      • For iPhone 7 I believe the US and HK model were the same. Appears for iPhone 8 the US has two models, one same as Aus/HK A1863 and the other same as Singapore A1905. Hopefully for those who ordered that DS/Kogan will send out the A1863 model.

    • I have just had confirmation from them this morning that there is no guarantee of a HK model. There email states:

      Thank you for your enquiry.

As we source our products from all over the globe to secure the best possible prices for our customers, we are unable to guarantee the exact model number of the phone you will receive.

However, we can assure you that all phones sold on our website will work perfectly on Australian networks.

Please feel free to contact us should you have any further questions.

I got HK stock last year when ordering my iPhone 7 Plus from Kogan, but I'm going to cancel my eBay pre-order and order from Shopmonk as they have said they are supplying HK stock.

      • Only gold for shopmonk, though? I can see that affecting resale value.

      • What's the benefit of HK stock verses iPhones from elsewhere?

        • +1

Both HK and Australia share the same model (A1863/ A1864).

        • @O O: Great thanks!

      • The iPhone 7 for US and HK stock were the same model. Do you know whether your iPhone 7 came with a US charger or HK charger. This is the probably the easiest way to tell whether the stock was from HK or US.

  • Any inputs on the Macbook 12"? Looking to get one but just worried about dick smith's warranty? If it's grey import, how about getting them from sites like eglobal digital? They seem pretty cheap there. Does anyone know if there will be another version of Macbook coming out soon? Thanks!

  • Says "This code has expired."

  • Curious has anyone got their Plus Space Grey shipped yet?

    • Nope

      • On their DS website they have 'Ships on 31st Oct' for the Plus models so i'm hoping they will despatch ours a week earlier.

        • I asked Kogan at the end of September if the delivery window changed. Here's the reply:

          Thanks for your email.

I can confirm that the estimated delivery time frame for the Apple iPhone 8 Plus will be between the 3rd and 24th of November.

This means that your order will not be dispatched until late October/Early November.

Please let me know if you require any further assistance, I'll be more than happy to help.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please let me know.

          Kindest regards,

          Rob
          Customer Care Team

        • @JoJoker: Best we can hope for is 23rd Oct week. They can't surely dispatch orders on their website first before the eBay orders.. Sucks if they do.

Just got an email from Dick Smith that my Apple iPhone 8 (256GB Space Grey) just left the warehouse. Says it should come in 1 - 4 business days. Was wondering when it was due to turn up.

    • +1

Yep, same. Also got hit with spam messages on ebay - I sent an inquiry a few weeks back and they responded. Now, they've sent me my own enquiry as a message. I responded and they sent that back as a message. Things are not well in the Smith household.

      • Weird. I've just gotten a courier email stating the phone should arrive tomorrow now as well. Here's hoping.

        • I have tracking from AP but only Shipping information received this morning, and no guarantee it will come next day as it's sent via Parcel Post.

        • What state are you in? No tracking items yet in VIC.

        • @dingdong3000: I got a separate email with a different tracking number from CouriersPlease that ETA's for tomorrow. Located in VIC as well. Will update if I receive it.

        • @dingdong3000: So i guess no ones been charged any import duties yet then? I don't think they would release it to courier for delivery if they wanted import duties..

        • @pauliau: I think they imported the phones first then delivered it using local courier/auspost, therefore no import tax implications.

        • @TPSmith: Have you received yours yet? I got sent Japan model A1898 :(. I'm a little bit disappointed regarding no warranty and the fact this version cannot turn off camera shutter sound.

Not sure what can be done if i speak to DS bout it… :/

    • Have you received yours? Model number?

      • Yes. Japan model A1898 :(

        • Thanks for that. Replied to TPSmith as I ordered the exact configuration but they have not dispatched my order.

  • Just got my iPhone 8 Plus 64GB. It's Japanese model A1898. I guess we won't be covered by warranty in Australia if something happens to it… The only slight advantage are the extra bands (11, 21, 45), however I heard this version has camera shutter sound.

    • Same, tbh really disappointed

      • Yeah very disappointing. I've sent DS a message bout it but doubt anything can be done.. If i had known about JP model i would have cancelled and ordered from Shopmonk but it is what it is.. The only thing we can do to decrease shutter sound is to use live mode or use 3rd party camera app to completely switch it off. This is going to drive me towards jailbreak to turn it off completely. Will be a long wait for jailbreak that's for sure though…

        • Oh man! That sucks, this is going to drive you absolutely crazy. DS sucks to be honest, they will have absolutely no leg to stand when Amazon comes by EOY (hopefully).

      • +1

        @dittolee
Are you going to keep yours? I'm considering selling mine for a lost and purchase one from Shopmonk…

        • I am going to sell mine actually, got 8 and 8 plus
so i have to sell two iPhones which is painful, specially as they are JP model and no one would want to buy.

I made complains to DS yesterday with saying that it's not fair to send different products to each buyers from same seller,
Particularly the products where has the function of constraint of Camera shutter noise which is extremely annoying when you are one who have to take screen shots all the time.

Eventually, Kogan (DS) rejected my request of exchange or refund and i am completely ignored.

        • I just found out my review of Kogan from Product Review.com was deleted

          WTH??

        • @dittolee: Oh wow so you ordered both 8 and 8 Plus that were both JP model from DS?! Did you open any of them? When you asked for exchange or refund did they reject you on the basis you have opened the phone or not?

It's actually a superior phone with extra bands and upgraded NFC but it doesn't hide the fact it cannot disable shutter noise. One side of me wants to keep it, use third party app until JB can disable.. the other want to sell it at a loss and just buy from Shopmonk at $979 which they have confirmed to be HK model…
I'm not sure how much it will go for but I expect to lose around $150-200 if selling through ebay.. So bloody frustrating

        • @dittolee: They know if more people find out it's JP version it will cause a massive call for refund i reckon.

        • @dingdong3000:

Before i tear the seal to unpack i check the back and model.

because i feel suspicious that Japanese Language at the back.

So yeh it was completely unpacked and still sealed condition

and i know JP and KOR model has camera shutter noise. so i was very shocked when i found out

as i was truly believe they would send HK model as the item description says

        • @dingdong3000:

They simply rejected my request because they already "MENTIONED" that they will come from different region (where?)

It doesn't make sense that why would people want to buy something that cannot switch off the camera sound and No warranty is covered.

        • @dittolee: The item location is suppose to be sent from HK as stated on their listing which one would assume be HK models like last year's iPhone 7/Plus sale.
I've already opened mine but have seal in tact but its really hard to swallow when you know its going to be at least $250-$300 loss for me getting the right model at Shopmonk. :/

Let me know how much you sell on the Plus so I can see how much of a loss. Maybe that way I'll decide if its worth all the hassle of buying correct model. sigh

        • @dingdong3000:

Is Shopmonk going to be receiving any more stock of the 8's? I just checked their site and the regular 8 in 256gb Space Grey is unavailable which sucks.

Cheapest I could find otherwise was here: https://www.android-enjoyed.com/apple-iphone-8-256gb-4g-lte-…

Not sure on reputation of the site but seems HK based so at least there's that. I had no idea about the JP model having forced shutter sounds until I read this thread, only vaguely being aware since I got the phone, but now that I am it's bumming me out.

What are the real-world benefits of the extra the 11, 21, 45 bands?

        • @dingdong3000:

Just finally get rid of my 8 and 8 plus JP models

Oh man it was so stressful.. so many questions and dramas

eventually i sold 8 for 900 (so lucky)
and sold 8 plus for 1000

Hope you can sell yours with good price too if you're going to.

        • @dittolee: May i ask where you sold yours? Fairly surprised that you were able to sell your Plus 64GB for $1000. Good stuff! Hopefully i'll be able to get close to that on eBay or here..

        • @TPSmith: As soon as i checked that it was JP version I found out about the shutter sound which really bugs me. It will only benefit if you ever go to Japan to use their bands and the extra NFC can be used in JP when paying the likes of Apple Pay and what not.

          Downside to JP version is:
          Shutter sound.
          Warranty.

They're the only two things i can think of out my head.

        • @TPSmith:

Do HK models have the shutter sound like the Japan versions? So annoyed I just found this thread and was wondering why my phone was making noises even on silent. It's driving me insane. I opened a PayPal dispute saying the model isn't as described. On the ebay listing, you couldn't even click out to find out what the direct import differences are. Finding it now it only says 'minor differences' but to me the shutter sound is a MAJOR difference that needs to be called out.

If they won't refund me, I'm also afraid I won't be able to sell it.

  • Did this listing say where the stock was coming from?

    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Apple-iPhone-8-Plus-64GB-Space-G… - nope

    • It does say Item location Hong Kong though.

      • I contacted DS a couple of weeks ago and the rep told me he could confirm I would receive direct import Hong Kong based stock. No mention of model number, but I took that to assume it would be the A1863 model, otherwise I would have cancelled. Not happy I got a JP model, so if they don't accept a return, I will open a dispute based on that.

        • Can you PM me that convo?

  • Tried my best to cancel but after 72 hours of being unresponsive (I even tried calling) they still shipped it. Now I get this in my inbox.

“Unfortunately, I am unable to confirm the exact model Apple iPhone 8 (256GB, Space Grey) you will receive prior to dispatch.”

Still holding out hope that they also have HK stock.

  • After seeing the comments on here I was able to cancel my order with DS. Lucky it hadn’t shipped yet! I didn’t want a 1k iPhone with no warranty here. Ordered from shopmonk instead. Thanks to those who posted.

    • Gold / Silver 64?

      • 8 plus 64 in Gold. I ordered in the first 30 mins of their ebay promotion starting too, so it proves they don't fulfill orders based on when you bought. Sorry to those that got burnt!

  • Received my phone this morning and it's the 1906 Japan model. It arrived in an unsealed box with a 2 port sansai Australian adapter. I thought I was getting a HK model as it was getting shipped from there :( I wonder what my chances are getting a refund

    • +1

As I commented at the start of this thread -
"Another possible problem is that, as Kogan is not an Apple re-seller, one can never be sure where the iPhone one receives was first sold. Kogan HK Limited (and I guess Dick Smith) will get iPhones from wherever they can find them. Europe, USA, etc. as well as Hong Kong".

    • Mine came last week in a sealed box but with a US adaptor and a dual Australian charger outside the box that's not Apple brand. Have you had any luck contacting them for a refund?

      • +1

Never bothered contacting them, phone looked brand new and untouched and cbf going through the trouble asking for an Australian adapter or asking for refund. I think I can live with the shutter noise every time I take a photo or just use an app to take my photos to avoid he shutter noise when needed

        • Good luck! I tried via insta, camera+, snapchat, and a few others to take photos and it still doesn't turn it off because you have to grant the camera access in order to work.
