DE Shaving, Money Saving Tips

Hi, tonight I finally got around to trying the pears soap I bought a month ago for a shave, I set about cutting it in half and forming it back round, at which point I put it in a mug and used my brush to lather up.

It took 4 or 5 times wetting my brush to get the lather I liked, and then I had one of the best shaves of my life (I was testing a derby blade for the first time, so that could of helped but it worked so well).

Anyway, so this got me thinking what tricks do people do to save money? I shall now be using pears soap to shave at 50cents per half bar.

  • I just use water, sometimes Redwin moisturiser. good to hear your story, thank you for sharing.

  • arko is ok for a cheap soap, I havnt even gone through 1/2 stick in about 2yrs, I also use a muhle r41 with astra blades.

    • I've read arko is good, apparently derby is very similar with different scent if that interests you.

  • Cetaphil skin cleanser. Doctors orders since I have sensitive skin

  • Don't make a hobby of it to save money! Funny that a lot of guys will say how cheap DE shaving works out to be, only to go out and splurge on more consumables than they would ever need in 5 lifetimes.

But dry the razor as much as possible after shaving. THey'll last a bit longer than leaving them wet.

    • But every face/razor/blade combination works differently. So the initial outlay is going to be quite large.

Look after your tools, and you can expect a lifetimes worth of quality shaves.

Sofar I bought 1 razor for $25 100 shark blades for $10 got a 25 blade sampler free with the blade as the guy was shutting down shop and was nice to me, it contained the derby blades, also has 10 pack of feathers to try later.

$2 shaving brush from a shop I forget where. I was using that shave brand cream in the toothpaste tube that cost $2 or 3.

Now I am using the soap which I've got 6 bars so $6 outlay.

      I wouldn't call that expensive?

You are right it isn't expensive at all.

I did as aoeueoa said, making a hobby of it. Bought endless razors, blades and consumables.

I use a de razor and shaving foam.

These are universally accessible anywhere in the world.

Got a Phillips electric shaver on clearance for $30 about 5 years ago from the Good Guys. Still going strong.

    • When I first started I bought a bauhn for $25, that thing pulled more hair then it cut, then went Gillette mach3, now de and it has been my favorite, but electric sounded good unless it's a hair pulling torture machine that I gave to my brother ROFL. He used it twice and threw it out lol.

  • I find hot water on the bristles long enough works the same as shaving cream.

I don't avoid the cream to save money but I'm actually just not interested in putting the chemicals on my skin.

I also use the cheapo single blade bic razors. Cuts well as long as I don't let the growth go for more than 4 days.

  • I use coconut oil instead of shaving cream / soap
