Crappy phone at any price. Avoid any 'smartphone' with less than 2GB of RAM and 16GB of ROM.

    • -1

It's 16GB of storage just like an SD card, not ROM. ROM is read only memory which means it can't be directly written to.

      • +1

Getting negged for stating the facts about something that is clearly misunderstood by many, the OzBargain way

    • +12

      Aren't you a charmer.

It has its drawbacks, yes, but thats why its being sold for under $100 (duh)

It is by no means a crappy phone. It has a good screen, speaker, good battery life, an 8mp camera which takes decent shots and it looks and feels much nicer than what you'd expect. It also has some great led lights, that you can turn on while your taking a photo, on the back and the front. Compared to some of the other cheap phones I've used, this is much much better

    • +1

Nukkels is correct, any andriod phone's Ram less than 2GB, storage less than 16GB, CPU frequency less than 1.8G, will reduce your andriod phone experience, slow and lag.

      • +15

For petes sake. Its a $64.50 phone…. Challenge you to find better value at this price…

        • +10

I just received my Apple iPhone X from the US, after skipping the queue and spending $2100. So happy with it. Much better than this phone.

        • +2

          @cameldownunder:

          Onya mate!

I would much rather spend $2100 and get a phone that blows this $64.50 phone out of the water and meets the approval of Nukkels and JJJ123.

I clearly appreciate value, glad us like minded people frequent OZB :-)

          Love your username BTW!

A little higher price, but twice the specs, and most importantly it's usable. If you think 1GB and 8GB ROM is OK, is because you've never actually used a phone with those specs.

@cameldownunder: I just spent $2100 on a weekend of hookers and blow. Have fun with your phone.

        • +2

@cannedhams: now we talking, comparing high and low class hookers/blow is better than comparing phones.

        • @Nukkels:

Thanks for negging my comment - Seems the price has gone up, because it was only $90 AUD yesterday. I'm doing the work to find a deal that offers better specs than this one, and letting people know not to expect the cheapest possible phone to handle more than a few basic apps. The last time I used a phone with 1GB of RAM was in 2010 and it was buggy and slow. With a newer version of Android on it, and frequent app updates, I expect the experience to be even worse now.

        • @Nukkels: why not the Xperia XA that's been posted recently? $100, Helio P10 Octacore, 2GB Ram and decent build quality. Australian store vs some quad core Chinadroid you gotta wait a month to arrive

        • +2

@cannedhams: Oh I did that too. Thought it was a good investment, having 2.5 Mio that i don't know where to invest, on a $500'000 yearly salary [ bonuses excluded ] Thought we were talking about phones.
They were quite excited when they saw my $80'000 investment car. And yes I think it is financially reasonable to have the car cleaned by someone.

        • @cameldownunder: more power to your right arm buddy. Unfortunately i didnt impress the working girls quite as much with my huawei g525, but luckily with all the money if saved i was able to shower them with cherry ripes and luckily the back of the huawei was just as good for doing lines of blow. I figured it was probably more meaningful in terms of life experiences than spending all my money on a phone.

          @Nukkels:

I agree with you that this is an awful phone. I paid $129 when it came out but would have been unhappy even if I'd paid half that. The 8gm rom (of which you only get a small portion to put your apps on) filled with just a handful of apps - then I couldn't update apps and it was constantly saying there was no storage left. So I stopped using it after only a short time. I'm glad you had the balls to neg this phone!

  • I have this since the cashback offer last year. Worked out to be a sweet $40 after discounts and cashback. $30 to unlock though. 8GB seriously limits what you can do with this

    • $30 to unlock? gee that is expensive

    • +1

I have 2 of these, my 15yr old son uses one and I use the other. Good enough for daily use, and he only uses it for Instagram and watching Twitch.
I don't remember paying for the unlocking though, I think I got Vodafone to unlock them for free, as I was heading overseas when I bought them, so I asked them if it's possible to unlock the phones for overseas use.

      • -2

        Oh God!

        Boys use Instagram now?

        • +1

YOu'll find they do, they just don't post as much as girls do

        • @annakira: I can roll with that.

        • +9

          Boys use Instagram now?

          Only to look.

  • Does this have a notification led?

    • +1

No it doesn't. Its one of the things that really lets it down

  • +2

Good value at this price, but for $130 you could easily afford a 2GB phone from Xiaomi.

    • not really good, given the starter kit is on sale for $5.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/333577

      • Those cheap starters are good for 35 days.
The included sim here is good for 12 months low use.

        • +1

I activate it as 365 days plan.

      • Mostly gone now. Sold out within couple of hours for most. Can Often get $30 on sale for half price or even $10 at Coles. The $40 going for $15 this week as well as their 4G wifi portable routers for lowest price ever $34. Comes with included 5GB data for 30 day exp.

  • This or the Sony Xperia for $99?

    • +4

Xperia XA would be a better buy.

      • Haha, of course the Sony would be better.
It also has a notification led.

        • Thanks, will get the Sony tonight when I drop by Woolies after work :D

        • @HarveySpecter:

Did you find a Sony still for $99. The Y6 is also good compared to local phones below $150 ish.

Has much stronger signal pick up in my experience, I even like the O/S lol.

        • @ozhunter68: No I didn't :(

My local woolies had no stock and they didn't have the Y6 either.

  • +1

Have this phone, paid about $80 a year ago on a Target/Optus offer and had it unlocked for nix when I couldn't get Optus reception where I live. Quite happy with the phone, no issues, able to install all the apps I wanted BUT I've just replaced it with a Xiaomi Redmi 4A Quad Core Dual SIM, unlocked, for about $115, to take OS with a local SIM in the USA. Similar spec but you do notice the faster processor. It's also has a more substantial case than the flimsy Y6. Huawei and Xiaomi are the future for realistically priced Android ..

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Xiaomi-Redmi-4A-5-0-4G-Smartphone…

Note: I bought mine on the recent eBay 20% off promotion. Wait your time ….:-) .. !!

    • The Y6 Elite was never available as Optus prepaid phone, must be different model. Pretty sure that is lesser model with lower screen res and only 5 mp camera from memory. Good deal though.

      • +1

Correct, I checked back and it was Voda.

  • +1

I got one last year with the Target EFTPOS card deal. Pretty much only use it as a car phone with HERE GPS but I do like having a phone with credit sitting in the car just in case.

  • +4

This seems very similar to my Huawei Ascend Y550 which in 2015 cost $45 (I could have paid $40 but it's a long story). Unlocking cost about $3.50 on eBay and this skinflint remains content with it.

    • +2

Yeah, cant forget that one. It was a good deal. I still have it going great till now.

      • +1

I kept hesitating because my Nokia ($10 from BigW in 2010) seemed indestructible.

        • +2

          but sooner it's unconnectable…

    • +6

I like the fact that youre still cut up about the $5 extra you had to pay seven years ago.

      • +1

        Lol,…..me too :-)

    • +1

I'm currently using a Y560 which I bought when Dick Smith was closing down. the phone comparison sites reckon is basically the same as the Y6 apart from slight (physical) size difference.

For the price, they're a decent daily driver.

  • +1

Excellent cheap second / backup phone for me, Got one earlier in the year at $90 i think, only use a handful of apps on it so im not pushing it, great to use with the fitness tracker thingy i have so it doesn't chew up battery on main phone connecting to it all day - i leave this at home so when i walk in the door it does all the syncing, only needs a charge twice a week. Got a free unlock at the time just by ringing up and asking, so i know it's there and capable to get me by for a few days if main phone dies.

  • +3

I used this phone for about 3 months when my good phone broke. Had absolutely no problems with it, certainly not the best, the 8gb storage was a bit restrictive, but the camera was better than some of my other cheap prepaids. Got it for the ripper price of $49 as well ($99 at Coles with $50 EFTPOS card).

  • +1

Great price for one of the best local cheaper Androids.

Coles also has the Vodafone 4G portable wifi on sale for lowest price ever $34 includes sim starter with 5GB data /30 day exp.

  • +1

Great phone, especially of you can't get the Xperia XA which seems to be sold out everywhere, this is a very decent fall back plan

  • +2

Approaching how cheap it was with the xmas gift card, 99-50 = 49
    (Once was only 89, 89-50 = 39)

    • +1

Once was $79-$50=$29 lowest ever on Target ebay but missed out on that one.

  • Can someone confirm this uses a nano sim?

    • +2

I think it is micro sim, from memory

      • bugger, thanks. Google results say different things depending on the site, so wanted to hear from someone who had one.

        • +1

To confirm, it is this size SIM

  • Damn, I was hoping it might have better bands than the usual Chinese phones, but apparently not.

    • The Vodafone Australia is only missing one band that I can see for current use in Australia, that's B7/2600MHz not so widely used only by Telstra and Optus in some areas ( possibly also TPG in future ).

  • +2

Yeah it is a decent phone.

  • Good Phone. Checked 4 stores with no stock in Sydney.

  • Picked it up today, still discounted. Great phone on a budget. My old on suvived two drops from a scooter in Thailand then ultimately died in when I got angry after twisting it in half.
