  • I have this tv, is good for the price, just a shame we did not dolby vision like america did.

    • I purchased but have not picked up yet. Any tips for setup?

      • sorry did not get back quicker, read the comments, there is an option to fast boot the start up, however every time it does an update, it will show the TCL and squiggly logo.

It can install Kodi and things, and if you install es explorer you install lots more.

Youtube and Netflix work well, only thing is i have never got any 4k Youtube to load on the TV.

There is a basic setup which is a cog button, if you go into home, and scroll down to settings it gives you a lot more.

Only thing I do not like is the hdr is auto, there is no option to turn it off, and no real hdr setting as such, you can just change everything you could on the tv but with hdr running.

Lag time for games is great, no prob there, only thing like Dolby vision the Americans also got full screen local dimming. so there is about 120 points of backlight it can turn on and off to give a good picture, our version is lit from the corners, and some times you get a little bit of light bleed, but mostly when first booting. I have never really noticed it whilst watching anything or playing games.

    • How well do the Android TV features work? For instance how long does it take to startup Netflix or YouTube? Is the interface laggy?

      • We have this as a kids TV (Had it for about 3 months now), the laggy part for us is the amount of time it takes for the Android OS to boot up every time you start the TV up. Unless someone has found a setting that allows the OS to stay running when in standby. Unlike when we use our MiBox Android TV box, as that Android OS stays running even when the unit is off/ standby.
We also have a Panasonic TV with a Firefox OS, and that OS also remains running when the TV is in standby, I prefer to be able to get straight to using the TV when you switch it on.
Honestly the only thing that we can fault the TV for is that boot up time. The picture is great for the price. When we play back any of our 4K movies with HDR through this TV from our 4K player, the picture appears less vibrant than if you switch off the HDR, maybe that is just our settings. With our other 4K TV, the HDR is a great improvement (But that TV was a lot more "mullaa" $).
FYI, when they say that this TV is a HDR Pro unit, that just means it is HDR10 (HDR Pro is the LG branding name for HDR10 to sound better :-) ). Can't go wrong with this TV for that price.

        • How long are you talking about for boot up?

        • The is an instant on setting that goes to stand by when you press the power button

    • I have this tv too, bought about 6 months ago, really impressed. I do have a concern about the headphone output socket that doesn't seem to work when I plug in. Same case with Bluetooth as I'm not able to connect to any Bluetooth enabled audio device. Any help???

  • Pros or cons over a similar 55" 4k Kogan?

    • well Kogan is half the price $500 lol

      • +3

Just did a rough brochure specs sheet check and seems to be HDR 10 and have smart tv capabilities and 4000:1 contrast ratio so there are some good improvements over the Kogan's.

The Kogan's I know don't have HDR at all, only some have smart tv capabilities but they are like $100-150 more and their contrast ratios are below 3000:1. So all of these little improvements in the TCL could definitely justify the little price increases for those who want a bit more colour increased picture quality in their tv which I might consider is a good thing for all types of viewing.

I have heard the HDR alone can make or break the picture quality of a tv, that and contrast ratio is actually more important than I actually initially thought it was.

It doesn't mention max brightness levels or nits so that could possibly be another determining factor.

Wish there was a YouTube channel or something that showcased as many tv's as possible together or side by side to compare the picture quality of low budget tv's with some mid and high end ones.

Rtings does a really good job but I think most of their target market is us and eu so some Australian models are missed out like Kogan's and Soniq's etc

    • I had an agonizingly long return/refund process with Kogan, can't recommend against them hard enough now. Months of back and forth due to faulty TV, wasn't repaired after being sent away and then they dragged out the refund process.

Based on my experience, I'd recommend to stay away from Kogan wherever possible (or just just hope nothing ever breaks).

      • Yeah this is one of my fears with Kogan. Terrible RMA or warranty process so you either have to pray you get a good one or try someone else.
