  • 12MTHSIM $40W2GB BONUS 20%OFF $40.00
Min total cost over 12 months is $480

So the discount is shown after the first month I'm guessing? Cause to me the $40 doesn't change.

    • +1

Yes confirmed with Virgin that the discount won't show on the checkout but will be applied on the bill. 20% is applied for the life of the plan.

      • Too easy, thank you for confirming :)

      • what happens at the end of the plan?

im currently on the SIM only $40 deal, month to month, and i get 10gb+10gb (rollover).

would this for $32/month give me 15gb+15gb (rollover).

i have 4 services (family), so genuinely interested in knowing if i should cutacross to this, or leave as it.

        • Discount continues until you change plans

        • @coco1458:

is that legit, from a virgin rep? i might pop into one of their stores to validate… ive been burnt b4.

        • @sachz:

Yes. I did check with Virgin Rep online. But feel free to double check it.

        • @sachz: Yep from a virgin rep and also experience, the discount continues through until you change plans

        • @coco1458:

Or until they decide to end that plan, and they automatically transfer you to another; which generally turns out for the better.

  • That's a great deal, anyone have any luck with signing up as an existing customer?

    • I signed up to this last week via online chat (existing month-to-month customer)

No CR or anything like that though.

    • I'm an existing customer on this plan and they wouldn't let me change to the "same" plan to take advantage of the discount. Online chat couldn't help me.

      • Currently on $40 month to month with 10GB data. Went on online chat to ask if I can avail of this and rep said yes. Since I wanted CR, I did the change of plan on my own and told him I don't know if the extra 3GB data went through. He checked my account and said it didn't but he can apply it from his end.

So I got 20% off of the $40 plan with 12GB + 3GB data and a one-off 10 GB data gift. Not 100% sure if it was tracked by CR though but I went through CR before doing the change of plan.

        • I think my problem is that I'm already on the $40 12-month plan.

        • I thought CR didn't work through doing it yourself online because it's not a purchase but just through "My Account"

        • @dufflover: I thought CR didn't work for existing customers

  • +1

Great deal! Thanks OP, but I think cashrewards is $45

  • Music Bonus - "Stream until 01/03/18 and up to 512kbps." - Does this mean after this date its not data free? Currently with Optus, what network does Virgin use?

    • +1

      They use Optus aswell.

    • +1

Either they extend the music bonus after that point or possibly it won't be data free. Might need to confirm with Virgin.

      They use Optus network.

  • +1

18GB for $32.00 a month plus unlimited Spotify streaming that doesn't count towards data.

I've asked Kogan Mobile if they can offer me a better deal than this as I have 3 months to go on my 12 month plan.
To be honest, Kogan/Vodafone 4G is light years ahead of Optus/Telstra in areas I've tested in Sydney.

Fingers crossed. I know Virgin being a MVNO will have capped limitations on their throughput as much as they say they don't. Get an identical device and run a speed test at the same location, You'll be surprised.

    • "To be honest, Kogan/Vodafone 4G is light years ahead of Optus/Telstra in areas I've tested in Sydney."

Which parts of sydney have you tested this?

      • Penrith, Mt Druitt, Liverpool, Pyrmont. Though not the most scientific test, I had 2 Nexus 6P handsets, One on Kogan/Vodafone and the other on Optus and all speedtest came out to the Vodafone units.

I believe this may be more down to saturation with Optus on-selling a larger part of their network to MVNO's.

In saying that, It wasn't a drastic margin so from a value proposition, this is a very good deal.

I am currently on Kogan's 12 month plan with 10GB of data at approx $22.30 a month.
$8.00 more for 8 gigs is a bargain.

Unless Kogan come out with a similar deal I might pull the trigger.

        • +1

          Ok no worries.

The reason why I asked is because you had initially also mentioned Telstra so i wasn't sure. But i think you were only comparing Kogan/Vodafone 4G to Optus 4G, if I am correct?

    • +4

Light Years. Literal Light Years!!! Calm down. It's probably the same.

    • +5

'To be honest, Kogan/Vodafone 4G is light years ahead of Optus/Telstra in areas I've tested in Sydney.'

To be honest, I question your claim. That is, if we are being honest with ourselves.

    • +4

"To be honest, Kogan/Vodafone 4G is light years ahead of Optus/Telstra in areas I've tested in Sydney."

You must be Ruslan Kogan or one of his staffs because Kogan the Bogan's network is light years behind Optus Voda Telstra.

They're the shit of your dog's shit or in my own words - the shittiest.

Kogan had to pay me $ 60 per month to get me on their network as the download speed is really slow as a snail.

      • Nope, Funny enough I used to work for Virgin Mobile's Complaint's resolution team 5 years ago. :)
Out of the telco game these days, simply looking for a cheap service that works for me.

https://imgur.com/a/S7kP1 - Speedtest Proof (Taken at various locations Metro Sydney)

Like I said, every area might produce different results, But from my OWN personal experiences. It's been consistently fast.

Kogan has a $5 starter pack with 16GB if you want to test them out.

PPS. Not affiliated with Kogan at all.

  • Although Virgin use the Optus network I find that I get better reception and speed using Optus directly. I noticed this after being with Virgin for many years and then changing to Optus. For this reason I wouldn't go back to Virgin. Anyone else notice the same?

    • That was my next question. Currently using Optus so would be interesting to know if there was a drop off.

Just got off Live Chat with Optus and they wont budge. Currently on $40p/m for 10GB.

      • +2

If you're looking to stay on Optus you could port away to a $2 sim and back in using this deal.
        http://offer.optus.com.au/spring-saver

        • Good idea! Shame they make you jump through hoops just to get the deal. Trying to get them to just change me to that plan over phone & live chat was painful. They wouldn't budge.

  • Thanks OP, wanted Optus' new deal but was for new customers, so went Virgin instead.

  • The network can't tell the difference between an Optus and Virgin customer. You even use the Optus APN when you're on Virgin.

  • Hi Guys,

My plan is finishing with vodafone which sucked bigtime. I am after sim only plan. How good is this offer? Is it better to shop elsewhere to see if i can get better than this.
    Thanks

    • I just did the same thing and went with the Optus $40 a month for 12 month contract. 15gb data + free music streaming.

      Pretty good so far!

      • Optus does not have the $200/free international call [to switzerland]

        • International service wasn't what I was after anyway. For me it was perfect. So far everything is running great, service is excellent.

      • $30/month atm

    • Maybe see if you can get a friend or someone to check actual network coverage in your house
I just switched from little to no reception with Optus to flawless 4G with Voda : )

  • +1

Was already customer on the month to month $60 discounted to $40.
Changed with helpful online chat, to this, and got an additional 10GB to use. All loaded up now !

  • when's 5G going to launch in oz???

  • Can you get student discount on top of this deal?

  • I'm on the Kogan prepaid service for 12 months when it was previously on sale for $25.90/30 days for 16gb (after they did the free data bump). Doesn't include international calls though which would be handy but not required. This deal is effectively $28.25/month including 20% off and $45 cash back, for 18gb, streaming, and international calls. Didn't think the Kogan deal would have close competitors for at least another 6 months but this has definitely proved me wrong.

    • 18GB ?

      • My mistake, 15gb. Ok I feel better now haha

  • +1

    Thanks lots, OP!

I was on the $30 plan for unlimited calls and texts, $50 international plus 2.5GB.

Live Chat just upgraded me to unlimited calls and texts, $200 international plus 18GB.

    Virgin have Customer Service nailed.

    • Did you have to say anything to get 18GB rather than the 15GB?
I've asked them but I'm hitting a roadblock despite being a customer for 7 years

      • I just asked, and "Karl" did it.

Been a customer for about the same time.

        • Tried this morning but no luck, maybe you were eligible for additional data rewards :)

  • Optus is doing same deal for $30/month
    Edit:Well $2 less a month but you get 3GBs less, 15GB instead of 18GB.

  • Hmm…I'm trying to get away from Virgin though…

    • Any reason?

      • Reception is pretty bad for me on the trains and places I seem to visit. Don't know why…

I have to admit though, 18GB is great value.

  • Why do I keep seeing 18GB mentioned. It's only 15GB isn't it?

    • Includes 2GB bonus + an additional 3GB when you enter promo code DATADASH at checkout before 12PM AEST 19/10/17.

      • The word "includes" throws me off because plans don't usually include "13GB" either. Usually 10GB or 12GB.

If it really is 18 then I'm going to hit up online chat soon lol. I got offered the 15GB (12+3 like this deal) when I asked on Friday (existing customer thinking of jumping)

    • On the site it says "+ an additional 3GB when you enter promo code DATADASH at checkout before 12PM AEST 19/10/17".

    • This is what I'm basing it off: Google Cache from 15/10

      https://i.imgur.com/QK6oUVi.png

      http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:https:/…

It says there, $40 for 10GB including 2GB bonus, then 20%.
Data dash of 3GB would make it 15GB.
Edit again: it even says that on the front Virgin Mobile page. 12GB for $32 then bonus 3GB.

      • Thanks for heads up

    • +2

      The main differences are:

Virgin: $32 per month, $18GB data (with roll-over), $200 international calls
Optus: $30 per month, $15GB data (no roll-over), 300 mins international calls, 12 months of Optus Sport (includes EPL), which can be streamed data free.

      • $18GB data

        What's that? =p

    • One thing to consider is that Optus offers Voice over LTE and Voice, SMS and MMS over WiFi currently (with compatible devices) whereas Virgin doesn't.

      • How does that benefit me when I have unlimited calls and texts?

        • +1

If you're home/in an area with bad coverage or there's a mobile network outage, it's a nice to have…

VoLTE is obviously much clearer also.

Another thing, lower battery usage for calls over WiFi if you're home (WiFi uses less power) and less "radiation" (if that bothers you).

  • damn…went on the $30 7GB plan like a month ago cry

    • Why don't you re-contract with them?

I was on the $30 plan aswell, and going to this plan (technically $40pm) is considered an upgrade.

You will be re-contracted though, which is worth it for $2 extra lol

  • How are some people getting 18GB?

    • +3

People are confusing the deal. It's actually 10GB +2GB bonus +3GB Datadash code bonus = 15GB. So NOT 18GB.

      • Phew! Thought I was getting ripped off here haha

  • Can anyone comment if I get this deal online, do they send the SIM to you by post? Does your month only commence when you start the activation process with the SIM. Is it possible that I could not activate until the end of this month when my prepaid month ends?

    • As long as you activate it before 8/11/17, and yes they will post it to you once the order has been approved.

  • +1

where to enter the Datadash promo code? i hv completed the order but still cant find it~

    • +1

In the shopping cart screen there's a subtle PROMO CODE bit of text you can click on to reveal the combo box to enter it (yes took me some looking too!)

      • Wow, really dodgy. It's almost designed for people to miss it.

  • +1

I changed one of my plans (not in contract) and paid a $58 break fee to change the other (which was basically the difference between my current plan and the new plan until original plan finished). So no real loss by the break fee, and locked into a better plan. Thanks Oz Bargain

    • Is there a break fee if you weren't in a contract?

  • Do Virgin allow using tethering your mobile phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot? Only thing I could find was in the small print under Data Free Music Steaming: "Song downloads, data tethering, video content, non-music content such as album art, ads, authentication & app analytics are excluded and will incur data charges."

I take it that means tethering is fine?

    • +1

      Yes. I do it everyday.

    • +1

      Yep, I also do it.

Do any of the providers block it these days?

  • "Don't forget Cashrewards to get $45 off cashback"

Excuse my newbie question but how to do this ?
    I registered with Cashrewards.

    Thank you:)

    • +1

You need to login to your Cashrewards, search for Virgin Mobile and click the link through the Cashrewards website. It will bring you to Virgin Mobile's website and you can sign up the deal from there.

      • +2

        Perfect:)

Thanks a lot. I never bought anything on their website so wasnt sure.

  • +1

I switched over, thanks josu for sharing. And thanks everyone for pointing out to use their online chat support, I couldn't find any other way to activate it since I'm an existing customer.

  • Hey guys and girls, I managed to get the same deal with Optus but at $30.00 a month and a bonus 2GB ontop of the 15GB making it 17GB a month.
Throw in free unmetered data for music streaming and the English Premier League + Optus Fetch App = better all round deal.

Virgin is good if you need the data roll over, but be aware the data only last for 1 month
(Data Rollover: any unused included data rolls over to the next month only)

    See my comments on https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/335784?page=1#comment

  • fyi just did this on the virgin chat even though its expired. Managed to get 1 extra gb i.e.

$32 + 12gb + 4gb (bonus, instead of 3 from this deal). I actually have a second service (my wife's) so that gives me an extra 1gb. Really happy for $32 + 17gb. Need the unused international roll over more than the EPL so I'm happy with the outcome.

    For reference, I was on the older $40 + 10gb deal .
