This is an awesome deal for a proper DSLR camera!

I don't think you can use the gift card to lower its purchase price though? (I'm not actually sure at all how you've calculated the discounts)
If you could truely get it for $347 then you could make bank all day on gumtree with these.

    • Well, I essentially said, but in terrible early morning phrasing, what the comment under me said, but got begged.
      Good old OZB.

Your comment isn't popular because you voted negatively towards the deal and suggested buying this just to make a profit.

        • I didn't vote negatively towards the deal until the votes had been given, I negged it once others confirmed the math was fishy.

        • @dfaktz:

Fair enough, I guess that depends on what a $100 gift card is worth to you.

        • @Lorindor: Not really, I mean, even with the mod cleanup, the description still says it would bring the price down to $347.

        • @dfaktz:

I meant that your negative vote fair, as it would come down to the buyer and what they thought it was worth.

I can also understand why the person who posted this deal used that math, as I would see it the same because I shop a lot at JB Hi-Fi.

    I'm not understanding your maths.

    You pay $599.

Nikon give you $50 cash back, bringing the price down to $550.

This took Nikon 30 days last time I bought one of their cameras.

JBHiFi gives you a chit for a $100 which has to be spent at JBHIFI.

I see how one could argue that the chit brings the price down to $450 but $347 means I'm missing something.

    I'm guessing the $347 is a typo.

Could someone explain the Harvey Norman connection?

    • Harvey's are giving away JB vouchers clearly ;)

  • The bundled zoom lens on these things aren't perfectly suited to taking good candid photos. A cheap fixed lens on this camera could make it a great for taking photos of people at regular distances indoors and outdoors. For most people a 50mm prime lens will be what they want on this camera most of the time, not the cheap kit lens that come bundled with DSLRs.

Not everyone wants to take portraits, the lense is a good start for all round use.

  • Price negotiations are not bargains.
Someone just literally posted this not long ago and got it removed.

Hate to tell ya but most of the deals posted aren't bargains.

NB: This is the non-VR version of this lens i.e. without optical image stabilisation. If you're going to buy a camera with the cheap kit zoom lens, I'd recommend at least getting the version with Vibration Reduction - makes a big difference when taking hand-held images in low light.

  • Harvey normal isn't selling it for $497??

$648 at Harvey Norman. This post is just not right.

  • This camera kit has been (technically) sub $400 on a couple of occasions throughout the year.
And I purchased one with an SD card and camera bag for a little over that just before NY2016 (along with a 55-300VR for a stupidly cheap price not long after).
So if you're keen and need it right now, and are happy to be stuck purchasing another $100 worth of JB product… go for it. Otherwise hang out for better deals on it.
Ps. not a bad little starting point into the DSLR world.

  • Math is still a bit off, $599 - $50 cashback = $549, then $549 - $100 gift card (if you consider that savings) = $449, so not sure where OP got $347 from.

  • Walked in to Jb at lunch showed them shopbot:

    https://m.shopbot.com.au/pp-nikon-d3400-18-55mm-kit-price-53…

Harvey Norman & Camera Sky both showed $497, girl matched the price instantly no questions asked and gave me a slip, walked to the counter paid for it got the $100 printout voucher for next shop, now just to submit my $50 cashback.. Thanks Op, I have other things to purchase at JB so ended up costing me $347.. :o)

Shopbot has now updated and removed Harvey, here is a screen shot of old sale price..
