Laser Multifunction ~$400 - Recommendations?

Hi all,

My dad's business MFP has recently developed some issues after ~12 years (smudging, ADF issues etc) and I'm looking for a replacement.

Needs a duplex ADF and duplex printing. Not too worried about speed and don't need fax. Wanting to spend around $400, and this is the best I can currently find.

Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Must be Mono

  • I have the Brother MFC-9330CDW but it doesn’t do auto duplex scanning, however the MFC-9340CDW does. They’re both in the $350-400 price bracket. Wish I’d spent the extra money on the 9340 instead, but otherwise the printer runs great. I use it at home which is probably overkill, but the wife and rest of the family love it as they can print straight from their iDevices. I buy 3rd party toners from eBay.

Oh, and this is a colour laser. Quality is far from photo quality, but good enough for office documents.

    • Ah, that looks great. I forgot to add to my post that it must be B&W only (never does colour printing + more to go wrong and huge speed tradeoff).

  • (smudging, ADF issues etc)

I assume you've given all the ADF rollers a good clean with some metho?
Also, pull out the drum unit/toner give the insides a careful vac out and wipe over with a rag (turn power off first). Might save you some money.

    • Have tried cleaning the rollers of the ADF, but it's not totally reliable sadly. Has also frozen up many times printing (not printing a full document altogether) and a factory reset/driver update couldn't fix :(.

  • I have the M426fdn.

I haven’t had any issues with it but wish it had duplex scanning.

    • Ahh…the user manual says that the fdn model does have double-sided scanning though? That sucks :(.

      • If it does I haven’t seen how it is done. Will look into it again next time at the machine.

  • +1

The Brother MFC 2740 ticks all your boxes but is more of a SOHO thing. Got it for around the 200.

    • Thanks, the "single pass" had me thinking it only did single-side scanning through the ADF but it seems that isn't the case!
