Does it have phone call and SMS capabilities? I am looking for a replacement for my ancient original galaxy tab 7.0.

Nah m8 you want the 4G Version if you want to make calls and as far as I can tell TGG Don't sell that version

      • Thanks Trent. Will look into tablets with 4G instead :)

        • Maybe as suggested look at the one below, not as good specs in some areas but still a great tab

Get the TAB A 2017 with LTE (4G) instead
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/339412

That will do phone calls. But it is a 10" screen vs the original 7"

I am surprised you persisted with it for this long (almost 7 years..)

      • This is exactly what I'm looking for. Cheers mate!

  • The only thing you gain by having 4G is that you can use the tablet anywhere there is coverage, still have to use programs like Skype to make calls, doesn't work like your phone.

    • I still have 3g phone, and my partner has 4g phone. In areas where there is 4g, her signal is much stronger in general. I hang onto phones till I need (not want) to replace them. My last phone was replaced because it no longer had the coverage. If I was buying anything now I would not get less than 4g.

All Samsung tablets with Cellular/Mobile allow normal Cellular/Mobile calls through the standard Phone app. It's not like Crapple and their iPads where you have to use some VOIP capability to do so. Sound comes out of the loudspeaker or through a headset when using it as a phone.

  • Bought S2 from them via eBay deal few months back and it was much cheaper than this. I know S3 is better tablet s pen is actually really good from owning a note 2 but you might be able to save a lot and get the same beautiful oled screen

    • is is sluggish? I've got the original Tab S, even with 3gb ram, it struggles, especially after the last security update which piled on more Samsung crap.

I should say it did struggle, I got around to rooting it, removed most Samsung apps along with pre-installed stuff & it's much snappier.

      • Can I ask for a link to a custom ROM that is good for the original Tab S. Mine is on Samsung firmware and it is struggling bad. Maybe I need to upgrade after all. Love the 10.5" OLED display though…

          I didn't use a custom rom.
I just rooted it (using autoroot.chainfire.eu) & used System App Remover (jumobile) to ditch the Samsung stuff.

Also I used Lightning browser (which is buggy for ozbargain comments, but quick for browsing).

But I'd go aicp or linageOS

        • Cheers

  • I really don't get this tablet. It's craploads more expensive than the S2 it is suppose to supersede but is only marginally better. Can easily get the LTE S2 for less than this price.
If you REALLY need the S-Pen, go for the Tab A 2017 version:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/339412
Yes, it's not a SD820 but its still much better value at $250 less and has LTE inbuilt.

    • I THINK the S3 adreno GPU does 10bit hevc decoding which would future proof it against video for the next decade ?

      • lol. By the next decade, you wouldnt have this tablet. You would be lucky to even use it in half a decade TBH. Not like H264 encoding is going away any time soon and not to say you can't software render H265 anyway.
        Whoopdee..

        • I got the S2 2016 refresh. It struggles with 1080p.

But Hevc 4k 60fps 10bit is I'm pretty sure a standard that will be around for a fair while

        • @jonathonsunshine: That's interesting. I've got the Exynos Tab S2 and havent had any issues with playback on 1080p movies on local storage and on my Windows server over WIFI. Not sure if I have any H265 to try though but I have played back a lot of H264 stuff over WIFI (SMB) and works fine for me. Takes a little longer to search on fast forward over the network due to the size. But all good.

  • Hi
Anyone know this is same as SM-T825C or the SM-T825C's USB 3.1, Type-C 1.0 reversible connector; , Can be use as OTG to access files from USB finger after I connect that Type-C port with micro USB convertor ? Thanks
