I must say I'm quite impressed by austincomputers, they have really cheap stuff (albeit low quantity) and they actually LOWERED prices from yesterday. I was watching the 500gb Samsung 960 Evo ssd and the MSI gtx 1070 gaming X and they both went down! Can't believe I would ever be saying this during a 20% eBay deal

Looks like austincomputers figured out how to use ebay deals to their advantage without being greedy hey

  • They even lowered the price of the i7 7700k, I bought it for $471 around 10am, they actually lowered it to $449 which is MSY levels! All sold out now though…

    • I was late to the party!

    this has passmark 9232

The same as a 2012 model i7-3770 , which can be had on eBay in an Optiplex system incl 8GB for around $280

New model has better GPU, but if you are gaming you want a separate card anyway.

passmark isn't really a good benchmark for games.

this has good single core performance (what really matters in games) and oc support over the optiplex.

    • Any idea roughly how much a custom build with an i7 4770k system with 4x8GB of gskill DDR3 would go for?
      (Purchased in 2013)

Anyone else seeing the price now as $245? Not a huge increase but also noticed changes in a few of their GPU listings aswell

    • +2

Looks like they upped the price :/

Not worth it when i5 8400 blows even the 7700k out of the water for $289, granted with the lack of motherboards it's not the best choice at the moment.

    • I'm on a Z270 board - I'd have to replace the platform to go to a 8350k.

So, this 7600K deal is good for now.

      • It's slightly better than the r5-1400 which goes for $200-$230.
So its a good price, just not a Great Price, on the whole scheme of things (AM4 long-term platform, and the i5-8400 value).

  • +1

too bad they sold out of the 8700ks this morning

  • +2

Price makes sense given the new 8 series.
This i5 is now inferior to the equivalent priced i3 8350K
    https://ark.intel.com/compare/126689,97144
i3 has higher base clock and 1MB extra cache.

    • Yes but the motherboards are so expensive right now for the new chips. i5 8400 seems to be the sweet spot for coffee lake.

      • I thought they were about $200?
Are the older boards that much cheaper?

        • Yes IIRC I bought my H110m board new for like $70 when Skylake came out.

        • Yeah maybe they are a bit expensive.
The Gigabyte - Z370 AORUS Ultra Gaming was what i was thinking off, thought it was ~ $200, but it's actually $250.
Still not a bad price though.

The H110m isn't a real comparison is it?
Can it overclock K series chips?
Thought a Z series chipset was needed.

        • @virtual81: Yeah you are right. I think those still weren't as expensive, maybe ~$150.

At the moment however, the board is like same price as the chip hahaha.

        • @currentfad:
Just checked PC Part picker, cheapest Z270 Gigabyte board is $245, so $250 for the Gigabyte - Z370 AORUS Ultra is actually pretty alright.
(my search did specify minimum of 2 x M.2 ports, so there might be more boards <$245 outside this criteria.)

        • @virtual81: Ah yes, the AORUS line is usually more feature packed :)

          @currentfad:
Too true, i wish it wasn't.
Sick of all the rubbish motherboards have these days, especially "gaming" boards.
          I like simplicity.
          Gimme a decent chipset, Z370
          ALC1220 audio
          Intel Ethernet, no gaming bullshit
Just the USB ports provided by the chipset, no 3rd party rubbish
Just the SATA provided by the chipset, no Marvel, Promise or whatever the F is fancy these days.
Good quality extruded aluminumum heatsinks, none of this fancy gaming crap that is usually actually less effective.
          Piss off the RGB bullshit.

I love the simplicity and tidiness of not needing SATA and power cables for 2.5" SSD's, but it seems you need a 'gaming' motherboard just to get a pair of M.2 slots.

    • I always get confused by CPU speeds.

So the i3 8350k has a base of 4.0ghz and can be OC'd while the i5 8400 has a base of 2.85ghz and can go up to 4.0ghz?. Which one is better and why?

      • If you take overclocking into account they're both very close.
i3's we not very interesting until the 8 series where i5's became 6 core and i3's became quads.
People will argue that games are very multithreaded, which is true, but i haven't seen a game that needs 6 cores to flog.
Some tasks spawn 10 or even 100's of threads and they are just shared among the cores as appropriate.
There is no rule that says each thread needs it's own dedicated core.
Also many 'multithreaded' games might just spawn a few secondary threads for menial tasks that don't require any real horsepower.
These threads would gladly co-exist with other threads from the same game with no loss of performance.
I have a big interest in performance per dollar, and now that the i3 has 4 real cores and a high clock it's a strong gaming class CPU without compromise.
Some prefer status and will pony up the extra for the i5-8600K, which is fine, that thing is a beast, best of both worlds.
Their brothers and sisters with i3's will have comparable performance.
But the non K i5-8400 has some pretty low clocks even though it has 6 cores.
For games that still like high clocks this CPU will catch people out, cores can not compromise for clock speed (and true vise versa, hence why i never recommended the dual core i3's).

        Anyway, gone way off topic.
        Your specific question.
i3 has a base of 4GHz, thats 4GHz guaranteed even at full load, it is overclockable too, so is likely to go past 4.4GHz.
i5 has an extra couple of cores, but can only sustain 4GHz on 1 or 2 cores, then clocks down to work within it's thermal/power envelope.
If you are video encoding or similar ONLY, the i5 will have a slight edge with it's combined 17.1GHz
If you are running a mixed load the i3 is likely a better choice with it's combined 16GHz (or more with overclocking).
The i3 will appease the games that like high clocks, as well as the games that run a few threads, and will make very happy games that do both.
Once overclocked I reckon it would even surpass the i5 at encoding and similar tasks too.

        TLDR;
Got cash, get i5 K series.
Budget without compromising, go i3 K series.

  • Great CPU for the price, But if you're looking at high refresh rate gaming. 7700k or even 8600/8700k is your best value. Games love high Threads these days, 4core/4thread CPU's aren't future proof anymore.

  • Ahhh what a deal. Need to stay strong for Coffee Lake. It will be worth it.

    Good stuff OP!

    • I thought Coffee Lake CPU's have hit the market last month? e.g the i5-8400k

      • Yea they are out but most places I've seen have them out of stock. Also waiting for more Z370 boards to come out.

  • Damn, I'm still with i7-950 from years ago. Was thinking of upgrading though because something is failing and the pc just freeze mid game. Hopefully a completely pre-built deal pops up soon as I can't put together mobo.

    • Power supply?

  • Austin computers is the star of this eBay deal.

  • They've just hiked the price to $343.85 before discount.

  • Anyone who bought this had shipping confirmation yet?
