Best Free App for Scanning Receipts

Looking for a completely free app to scan my receipts/other home documents ?
I want to use my phone to take a photo and then be able to sort into different folders just like a physical filing cabinet ?
A lot of the ones I have searched end up charging you for a subscription after a while if you are using it a large amount of docs.

Any recommendations please ?

  • where would you store these scans?
phone / pc / ext hdd / cloud?
dropbox would seem to be perfect……

Google Drive App has a built in receipt scanning (assuming you have a google account)

Does a very good job most of the time with edge to edge detection and converts them into B&W. If it fails, you can easily adjust it as well.

    • Do you have to pay after you've used the space you get allocated ?

      • I believe you get 15gb spread across email + drive. happy to be corrected. So if the file is fullm you can't upload anymore but can download them. You can pay for more storage.

so you can easily setup something like [email protected] and just use it mainly for storage. As dragon mentioned, receipts are small and 15gb of receipts is a lot and will need archiving.

    • i used that as well. can search text inside pdf too from the app.
not sure about space used but receipts are small anyway

  • You could try MDScan. It has been listed here for free a few times.

  • Hello

What type of phone are you using.

You can see it we cant - so how can we advise you without this little detail.

  • Thanks, I. Going to try the Google drive app !

I've been using Microsoft's Office Lens. Has worked pretty well for me, will be sticking with it.

The app makes the image searchable, and has page edge detection and transformations (a photo on an angle magically gets made flat). Then it saves everything automatically to free OneDrive space.

My wife was looking for exactly the same thing last night. We settled on Google keep as it also lets you add additional notes to the recipe put labels on notes, set reminders etc and search.

Evernote. It has text recognition so you can search your receipts.

iOS 11 has document scanning built in to the notes app.

Recently started using this and it's amazing. Includes OCR for free (unlike Evernote) and instantly syncs across devices. If you're in the Apple ecosystem would highly recommend. I was using Evernote before but they majorly annoyed me with commercialising their free version by removing functionality and then asking to pay every time you opened the app.

      • Yup, ex-Evernote user here. Been better off without it tbh.

  • i was just looking at A4 document scanners on aliexpress today when i found this thread. thanks and i:ll take the google keep advice.

  • Would be ideal if there was an option where the app would automatically organise the receipts into relevant folders based off of the date on the receipt.
