Using Points to Travel to Singapore in Late December

Hi All,

I'm looking to travel to Singapore from Perth on 26 December and return 29 December.I know this is short-notice and quite an expensive time but just want to see if I've missed anything.

I have a heap of Velocity and Qantas Frequent Flyers and have played around with options and can't seem to book anything for less than 100k points. I've looked at Qantas + Jetstar options, Velocity show zero flights to Singapore and converting to KrisFlyer from Velocity will be over 100k points and a few hundred dollars.

I know it is a long shot but just wondering if anybody has any ideas or workarounds in regards to finding flights to Singapore around this time for less points.

    I've heard your velocity miles go further if you transfer them to the KrisFlyer account, and redeem from there. Hope it works out for you!

    If you transfer 54,000 VA points to Krisflyer, you'd get 40,000 SQ miles which can get a PER-SIN return economy reward flight.

    However there is currently no availability on PER-SIN on 26 Dec (but you can waitlist).
    On SIN-PER 29 Dec there is availability on the 00:10am flight SQ225, and the rest of the day has 'Waitlist' only.

    If you book a waitlist fare, there's no confirmation you'll get the flights though so it's not the most secure option.

    But you could phone them afterwards and try ask them to approve it.

      Hi thanks for that, but thats 40,000 SQ miles each way right? So 80,000 total plus taxes?

        I may be wrong, but it seemed that 40,000 SQ miles was the return fare.

          I'll take a look. So if I convert to Krisflyer and the waitlist thing doesn't work out, is it easy to transfer back to Velocity? In addition, the exchange rate is the same both ways so I wouldn't lose out on any points?

          @fivespice: Don't think of it as an exchange rate, it's more like a fee. 1.35 VA points gets you 1 KF point. 1.35 KF points gets you 1 VA point.

    It's only 65k KF return in business, wait-list on the way there but there seems to be availability on at least 2 flights going back. For what it's worth you can also tag on an extra flight to SGN, BKK, HKG etc for the same price.

      Thanks so much for this. I'm pretty new to the KrisFlyer system, how do I tag on a flight? It only lets me put in a return or one-way location not multiple stops.

        just put it as the end destination or if you want more than 1 day stopover, you can call the Kris Flyer team and request dates further out. You can have 1 stopover for free. Since it's the same price as just flying to SIN it could be fun to visit another city for the same price (especially in business).

    Thanks all so much for your advice. I had a good think about it and decided I want to go to Tokyo instead so I've waitlisted myself on Krisflyer. The chances of me actually getting the flights are quite slim it seems.

    Does anyone have suggestions for the best ways to improve my chances? I've called Singapore Airlines a couple of times and they have sent further queries through to see if anything else can be done.
