  • Love the output but hated wasting my time cloning out all those dust spots in my photos….

    • Dust is kind of a problem for all compacts but the output is loveable though.

      • Anyway the GR really needs a real upgrade.

The 16mp sensor is really getting long in the tooth….

        • +3

Not really. 16mp works fine for large 20x30 prints. Pros still use 16mp cameras. It's a pretty common misconception. Not many people need more than that. It's nice to have more though

        • @mit:
Doesn't the GR2 use the same sensor as the GR1?

        • @ALange Sohne:
Yes, but as mit says, it will still produce great pics and enable large prints

Not really a deal. The only thining in favour is the sensor size for weight (248g). Imho something like the the sony a6000 is a better option. You get the a similar sensor, full controlls, compact size, cheaper and not a whole lot more in weight. The richo imho is a bit out of date as they really didn't update the camera much for ver II.

I disagree.. this thing will fit in your pocket which makes all the difference sometimes between carrying it with you or leaving it at home. Even with a pancake lens the Sony will be much bigger.

      • and thats about the only reason to buy this camera. So you are paying $600 for pocketability.

        • Yep, we agree then :)
I have a Fuji X-T2 for when I want to take serious photos, but I need to carry a bag with me when I take it.. I see a lot of appeal in a camera like this to throw in my pocket when I leave home without a bag.

Here's a size comparison for anyone interested..

@Stzaa83: Lol Ok you win - that is a nice comparison ha ha. I agree portability is important. I switched to a sony a7 after many years of carrying my nikon and canon full frame DSLRs so know the feeling.

edit - i revoked my neg vote after seeing that comparison :)

        • There aren't that many cameras with an APS-C size sensor at that price range and is compact. Market might be small for the camera but $600 is pretty reasonable for the quality that it seems capable of. Fuji X70, LX100 (700+), Nikon A each have their +/- and more expensive. Each to their own I suppose.

        • @WTF:

Apologies for getting off topic, but how are you finding the a7? Would you recommend it? I'm looking to upgrade from GF7 and have seen them 2nd hand for around $1k with lens which seems ok

        • +1

@Mr Mrrtn: A7 is a great camera and imho provides best value for money - I bought mine new (AU stock) for $850 from a Ebay 20% off sale that coincided with a cash back offer from Sony. Don't go for second hand ones - just wait for a good sale and you can get it easily for under $1000.

I love the camera. It is so portable which is amazing given its a full frame. The pics are super good. Way cheaper and smaller than my canon pro gear that I use for work.

The best thing about the a7 is that you can use legacy manual lenses with it. I am old school and quite used to manual focus so works well for me. Alternatively, pop on a smallish lens like the Sony FE 35mm f2.8 (brilliant but somewhat expensive lens - I got mine new for $450) - and then you have high quality package.

Couple of things to note about the a7 - it is not built as tough as the canon or nikons - My cannon 80D is built like tank. Sony doesn't seem to be the same and I find myself being much more cautious with it. Also Sony lenses can be expensive compared with canon/nikon unless if you go down the legacy lens route in which case the lenses are super cheap.

          Have fun :)

        • @WTF:

Thanks for the info :) Thats an amazing price for the A7, even 2nd hand the A7 seems to go for more! The best I found is a local 2nd hand one in good nick with zoom lens for around 1k. very tempted, the only thing holding me back is the extra investment needed for the lenses/adapters

@Mr Mrrtn: Keep an eye out for sony cashback deals. Happens 2-3 times a year. There should be one coming up close to december/new year. Then wait for a ebay deal to coincide. Look for videopro, digidirect, and ryda that sell local stock so you are eligible for both deals. Then its Bingo!!

    • +1

Not enough reason to neg the post.

Simple definition of deal: if the offered product is the cheapest price for the model and its attainable.

      • -2

It is not a deal if there are alternative products that offer better value for money. If you are solely looking for a camera that fits in your pocket then this is a good camera but that not the only reasons people buy a camera.

I am just making people aware that there are better option for those that are looking more broadly for a good camera. For example, there is a Nikon D3400 with kit lens for $397 with Amex cash back deal. Much cheaper and better overall camera.

Comparing this to a small (interchangeable lens) DSLR isn't that helpful, they have nothing in common. Someone in the market for this camera would very likely NOT be looking for a D3400 let alone as an alternative, maybe as a secondary camera.

        • +1

@stimpyjcat: Sure but if you are looking for the best compacts then the Sony RX 100 V (or IV) is the way to go and can be had for about $900. Tts a awesome camera that beats the Richo hands down even with the smaller sensor. Thats my problem with the Richo - it is sort of ok at everything but good for nothing camera.

        • +1

@WTF: True but still $300 more. If money is no issue then yeah, no argument. An RX100I would be a better comparison for that price point.

    • I kind of agree with this. You are paying a lot of money for ok (but not great) camera.

I urge anyone to have a play with this camera before giving your opinion.

It's so compact & light for its photo quality. I have always use it single hand super comfortably. All the buttons are smartly located.

Other alternatives in the range, you won't be able to hold it securely one hand and taking the photos at the same time (for a long period of time).

It's holding its value well I can see. Not sure what will be in store for GR III.

  • +1

Just for a bit of context, this is supposed to be and is often mentioned as THE camera for street shooters (esp B&W) and for photographers who want something compact, with fixed lens with manual control. There are certainly many other alternatives if the category is simply compact cameras. It's definitely for a specific kind of photographer … probably not someone who wants a camera with zoom capability, family happy snaps or to shoot occasional video as well - in which case something like a Sony RX100 or a Pana LX ___ might be a better option.

Could be a great camera in the right hands though. Those who have been eyeing one, like me, certainly the cheapest I've seen including sales.

  • +1

This is the best compact camera at this price range full stop. I could not understand how someone can compare the interchangeable lens camera with the compact camera. I have Sony RX100 mark iv and Ricoh GR II. both cameras are different. for photographers camera ergonomics and handling is important. Ricoh GR II produce amazingly good stills.
