Promotional pricing on CREE LED lights at below 50% retail across the range

20

We're having a promotional sale to celebrate our opening, you can pick up an LED globe + driver KIT at less than 50% retail.

Do something good for the environment while beating the electricity price rises. Did you know that swapping out 12 Halogens will give almost 1/2 the energy savings of a 1.5kW Solar PV system, for a fraction of the price - best of all you get to keep your existing low tariff rates, see website for details.

Please note, to be up front about this, chances are you'll need new LED compatible 12V transformers to run the globes. The globes are not compatible with standard Halogen electronic transformers, although they are compatible with the older iron core transformers. You can identify them by weight, iron core are heavy while electronic transformers are light, see website for recommended transformers.

  • It is great to see this deal back and now open to everyone without restrictions!

I work in the energy efficiency industry and I always cringe when I see LED sellers comparing their LEDs to halogen using a lux meter like that. Of course a narrow beam 8W LED gives more lux directly underneath than a wide-beam 50W halogen!

Your other techy info on the site is pretty good, and at least you are being upfront and honest about it. Especially the general information about lamp life and lumen maintenance (light level depreciation) which is a very important aspect when comparing LED performance (and almost impossible information to get, including from yourselves).

Note that your link goes to a promo page and it is NOT easy to work out how to get to the store, or to get proper product info. You need to link to the "Next Generation LEDs" section in teh store, or at least put a link on that "Introducing The Next Generation…" page.

Also, I cannot see how this is a bargain as such - the prices don't appear to be discounted. You do realise you'd have to provide evidence of teh normal RRP if you want to make a claim of "50% off"?

    • I always cringe when I see LED sellers comparing their LEDs to halogen using a lux meter like that.

I always cringe when I see LED compared to halogen. Period. Halogens are evil. Florescent is the competition.
You can get floro downlights now. LED is excellent for battery-powered app's, but fails to compete with compact floro in the home, from what I have seen.

      • What we find is that it's really personal preference. Personally i really like the GE Entice CFL, it's got a really nice warm color to it, I combine them with these LEDs i have installed at my place, the combination seems to work well, not sure about fluro downlights, a lot of people don't like CFL, although if it cuts greenhouse gas emissions I'm all for it!

  • Is the 50% off price 50% of the listed price on your website? IE. The Optex eXtra 8W LED globe lists as $31.50 each is that before or after the 50% off ?

  • Thanks for the feedback guys, especially llama, I've only got 5 comments as I'm a new users so I'll try to make them count. Firstly, yes you are right regarding lux and beam width and all that, that's why we say that the 5W is equivalent to about a 25Watt Halogen overall and the 8W, which runs at 60% higher current is equivalent to a 40Watt overall, from some of the other claims I hope you'll see that's pretty honest…

Secondly, no it's not 50% off the store price, alas these CREE globes are really expensive. Perhaps I'll make that more clear on the website. You'll have to convince yourself by shopping around that the prices are about %50 below retail. One of the main online led sellers states that the retail for a "3x3 9W" LED is $89. We're selling them for 28.50, and claiming 50% below retail.. but anyway if you think you can find a better price send me an email and I'll see if I can better it :)

  • we should buy, why not? we need to help out Australia's retail shops even though they're not cheap.

    • that mentality only works when retailers buy from Australian manufacturers, or are able to negotiate a significant discount from the supplier over what can be bought for overseas. Cree most likely manufacture in china, so all you do by buying from an australian retail over an overseas store is put more of your money in the middlemans pocket. Though now that i think about it you where probably being sarcastic.

Tbh your website is sort of confusing. You say these are cree leds but mark them as Optex eXtra. Does that mean that you have just rebranded the whole package, or that the batton is custom with cree leds inside..?
But most of all, this is a pretty niche product. I wouldn't even know where to buy one irl. So mentioning rrp is pretty useless, seeing as how neither I nor most people on this sight ever pay RRP.

      • "So mentioning rrp is pretty useless, seeing as how neither I nor most people on this sight ever pay RRP."
LOL, so true, can't remember the last time I actually paid RRP since using Ozbargain in early 2009.

      • Hi Outlander, to clarify no middlemen here, we're direct from manufacturer through us to you. It's expensive because its CREE (American), that's what Optex Solar is all about bringing premium quality green products to you for less :)
