Multi-Room Speaker Alternatives to Sonos?

Hey All!

Sonos are what springs to mind when anyone thinks of multi-room speaker setups, but the technology has come leaps and bounds since Sonos first came on board. I'm having a wedding reception in my backyard, and it's quite a large backyard, so linked speakers are ideal.

I'm wondering if anyone else has any recommendations on alternatives?

Thanks!

  • Hi Korey,

Have you looked at Google Cast Audio as an alternative, it allows you to connect multiple speaker via their aux port.

There are some limitation such as the dongles will have to be within the network range, however it is a very cheap alternative.

I've got one set up with two speaks and I cannot notice any lag between the two.

You can also control the music directly from spotify(and other music apps if necessary).

    • I haven't been very impressed with my Chromecast Audio for multi room. Half the time it wouldn't find the Home Theatre group i created, and then it randomly cuts out for no reason. Pretty frustrating

That being said, my in-laws have a Sonos and it randomly stopped working a couple times during parties if you're also running youtube off the same wifi network. It was a bit finnicky

      • yeah I had heard similar things to be honest. It'll all be run through Spotify and not YouTube so hopefully the drop-outs experienced on Sonos won't be an issue but the price tag is what kills me.

      • Sold my Chromecast Audio and my Stereo system. Use Sonos exclusively now for all music. Haven't had any problems with it like you mention. But haven't really tried streaming multiple things at once. All my devices are on the 5Ghz band and Sonos runs on the 2.4Ghz band so I guess that helps.

    • I have thought about that but given that it will be a relatively loud and dancing affair, I wasn't sure of the punchyness of those sorts of speakers. What's the sound quality/bass like?

If wireless is your only option, another alternative is get a couple of UE Boom 2's and link them in stereo. I know they are quite loud but not sure how suitable they'd be for your backyard. You'd just have to keep the source within bluetooth range.

Depends how much you want to spend.

You could just run some old fashioned speaker wire around the perimeter of the yard and use normal speakers connected to a sound system.

    • I totally spaced on the UEs! I could get a Mega and a couple of smattering of Boom 2s and do it that way. Portable and battery powered too, which is aces.

      Cheers!

    • Never heard of this one before, I'll be sure to check it out! Thank you!

No problem. Not a great deal cheaper than Sonos but I picked up some stuff through eBay sales (have a WXA-50 and NS-IC600 speakers in my entertaining area).

If it's just for the wedding though wouldn't it make sense to hire the equipment?

          • 1 for Music Cast. Great system, I have multiple different Yamaha products in different part of the house and never had a problem/
    • This is my choice the sound fields are much better and you have much more choice than Sonos

I’m tipping the OP wants to buy a wireless speaker system for his house and he is using the wedding as a good excuse. Power to you brother.
