This is the frugal single bachelor in me talking but either just hold em or wait for a good deal on either food or pay bills.

Seems like you have everything already and just need a buffer for unforeseen circumstances.

For example my washing machine just broke down so I am just dialing down the purchases and expensive impulse food buys so I can get some washing done asap lol.

    • You'll get some rain in Sydney this week. Free washing!

      • Missed an opportunity for today's laundry was pouring and thundering like crazy.

Two ideas: (a) use it to pay off the account charges, or (b) sell the points - many in this thread reported good experience in selling them to the OP (never done so myself, so not speaking from experience).

hold them… Build more up… My wife and I once had young kids too. They do grow up much quicker than expected. Build up a pool of points and use them for a holiday in a few years time.

We had three kids under three. Now 10,10 & 9. In the first five years after having kids we simply stockpiled points. Then we had enough to cover all the flights on several family holidays both international and domestic. So my advice, it might seem like you'll never travel again. But that time will fly, so build your balance and plan to enjoy a few holidays on a few years.

    • Good to see the theory working in practice! Hopefully they don't devalue points along the way, as it's a long time away for us

    Travel is the best value.
As long as they're not expiring, you'll need a family holiday sooner or later.
If you don't a holiday yourself, the wife will need the holiday.

What I'm saying is, you can't get away from travel itself - it's going to happen sooner or later.

  • Sounds like you want to close the card/ avoid an annual fee. Simply call up and ask what your options. They swapped my Plat Edge for a Gold card with no annual fee for life. Far less point earning potential, but this way I could keep my points. They said to call up down the track and ask to upgrade the Gold back to a Plat Edge. I asked for a Plat Reserve and got denied..oh well. If not, the current 15% Velocity transfer bonus deal is pretty good. You wont lose them, but they will be locked in that Alliance. Pretty sure there is a SPG or similar deal as well.

    • No annual fee, got a free gold amex. Just haven't been paying attention. I hold on to the card mainly for the offers around Christmas time. Thanks for the tips.
