  • I think i will go get one and some xmas lights from the other thread … $69 for the unit that goes in the bbq vs the whole unit, i know i prefer this :) plus its charcoal/wood fired i believe.

    • Only $49 for the BBQ pizza oven at Bunnings. Turn the gas on and wait 5 minutes to heat up vs waiting ~30mins for coals to get going and hoping they're providing an even temp. Sure you get to say your pizza is woodfired but the stuffing around and assumed average quality of this oven makes it a no brainer to me.

    Are these good?

    • They look really good, I am interested as well :)

    • For $69, how good does it need to be?

I used to have one. As @vbt said, these leak heat from the top door like crazy. You can cook one pizza in it before it gets too cold, and it's very difficult to get it hot enough in the first place (needs to be more than 200c). As you need to put a lot of extra heat in the bottom fuel section, the bottom of your pizza stone will get very hot as well unless you have a buffer in between and you will probably burn the base of your pizzas.

After the first use I found the metal of the door warped outward a bit so it leaked heat even more as there was a 5mm gap on the sides.

I didn't hold onto mine long before upgrading to a clay oven.

Bunnings have heaps of different pizza ovens that would probably be better than this thing but of course they cost a bit more.

Thanks Flamo. Very good feedback. You saved me some coin. Kudos.

No worries mate. I would add that if you have the time/bother you could probably modify it to make it better - maybe add fire bricks to the top level as a buffer/heat retainer and some sort of stuff around the door to keep the heat in. But probably not worth the effort for a marginal improvement!

  • Have a weber kettle, any improvement with this?

    • If you stick a pizza stone on the weber, not much of a difference. Main improvement would be the ease of adding more fuel with this.

  • I have the Aldi version. Works well, but being solid fuel based you need to be patient and wait for the temperature to be right for the food being cooked. We use wood rather than charcoal, as the temperature builds quicker and then just need to wait for the coals to burn down.
It does give a smoky flavour, which I like, and keeps the heat for a reasonable period so it is possible to do a pizza when hottest, and then a smallish roast for a longer period as it cools.

I bought one which I now regret… thin metal, leaks everywhere, especially around the door.
    There's $800 pizza ovens, then there's these. There's a reason for that.

    • Hey mate, with the grills do the black coated ones go on the top or bottom?

It's probably a better smoker than a pizza oven.

    • True, but they don't hold temperature.
I sealed the gaps around the door and thermometer (and everywhere else), used lump charcoal as it burns hotter and still, garbage.

      They're basically useless.

  • Saw some proper pizza ovens on sale at bunnings last week $1099 down to $300
