Can this be used as a normal Seagate Plus external drive for PC/Mac?

Shipping is free with a Free Shipster membership btw.

    • +1

From everything I have read (in about 2 minutes) it is just a standard HDD with xbox branding

      • +2

Exactly what I thought but just wanted clarification, seems to be a great price for a 4TB external drive.

    • Given the Harvey Norman link says it includes "1xNTFS Driver for Mac", I'd say that it would be usable with Mac too

    • +1

OSx reads NTFS out of the box and can write to it if you enable it in settings.

      • -1

Can you share a link to the Apple page advising where to enable this in settings?

        • Oops got negged. I should have said any page.

        • +1

@lawrencium: OK so install an app. What happened to enabling it in settings?

        • i dunno guy. You can enable osx inbuilt ntfs write support with terminal or something but it's disabled by default cause it not guaranteed. You can just format it as journal+ or whatever if you just want a 4tb hdd to use with your Mac. Or exfat if you want more compatibilty.

I dunno sweet f all about osX generally, I know i made it work on my mums though and I didn't install anything and i'm pretty sure i didn't have to use terminal. It was a switch that I flicked on.

        • @muncan: it’s a native Terminal command, as the various articles state.

      • you can just format it anyway. I don't have a mac but it's just a hdd. Format it as HFS journaling + or whatever it is via the normal methods for that platform and it should all be good.

    • Hello doweyy, yes you can. They are designed for Xbox but you can format them and then use as external storage.

  • Anyone knows if you could use it as a normal External hdd? Looks like a good price for 4gb

    • +1

You can. Its a normal HDD with Xbox logos.

  • No stock in SA

    • +1

Price beat @ Officeworks, delivery or seems to be limited stock around in SA.

      • "$269.00" LOL

        • +4

Lol classic OW moves, comes to $113.05 with their price beat :)

  • +3

tempted but negative comments from Amazon worry me - enough people complained about the drive stopped working out of the blue after a few months.

    • I've had a few internal and external Seagate hdds fail on me to know I should avoid them. I've owned many WD drives over the last 10 years and only one has failed in that time. Luck of the draw I know…. guess I'm lucky in the boxes I've grabbed from JB and other pc stores.

      • +3

I’ve had the exact opposite to you. All the WD external drives I’ve had have randomly stop working whilst all the Seagate drives are still going. They’re both as (un)reliable as each other.

      • +1

I've had the same experience. I've wasted a ton of cash on Seagate and the last time they were reliable was when 2TB was max capacity. I still have 5 out of 6 drives on my 6.5 year old always on beast running strong…How long for I don't know but 6 years is a lot more reasonable than the 1 or 2 years I've gotten lately.

Haven't had a problem with WD, but based on the reviews on Amazon and elsewehre it does seem that at least one of their portablemodels have a high failure rate. WD, HGST and Samsung are all I am willing to buy at the moment.

  • These are great! I've had the 2TB for about 3 years nearly. Never missed a beat. I swapped it out with a normal 3TB and now use the 2TB on my computer for storage, so can confirm these work as normal on mac and windows (mac needs a seagate driver- free download on website).

  • Nice price! Grabbed one to replace a dying external drive.

  • Thanks OP. My WD 3tb died recently.

Very cheap especially with my gift cards from Amex deal.

    • Your WD 3tb probably still has warranty depending where you bought it. Two or three years in Australia, I think.

      • Thanks. I will check it out.

  • I haven’t followed HDD prices in a while but ~$30 per TB seems pretty amazing!

    Ozbargained 😭

Available here or call 1300 OFFICE to price match @ Officeworks

        Thanks, got one there :)

        • Same, hope it comes.

      • Cheers got one too

      • amazing how some people can get officeworks to answer - 20 minutes nothing.

      • +2

        Ozbargained 😭

  • Cannot add the item to shopping cart.

  • +1

    Price error!

    • +2

      Butthurt downvote much? Haha

  • +1

    Gone wtf

  • Tried to placed the order, but didn't work!

  • +1

Probably a price error? They have the 2tb one for the exact same price- https://www.harveynorman.com.au/seagate-xbox-2tb-game-drive.…

    • Yeah, looks like it might be. The page for the 4TB linked in the deal is gone. Damn! Can always hold out a little hope for it being honoured though I guess.

    • Gerry Harvey is probably going to whinge about the "professionals" again.

  • +1

Page is back online for those that missed out. Never mind, gone again. It's in a state of constant flux.

  • +2

LOL I was quick enough to get Officeworks to hold one for me and got there to price match just in time before the page failed!

Anyways, the link on the Joyce Mayne still works. I'd suggest to grab one there ASAP.

  • Damn both HN & JM links not working :(
Was going to stop by the OW store in 15 minutes

      Google cache

      • Hm, tried that but it just comes up as $249

@Procyon: well that's better than no screenshot… do they call up stores to confirm, or load the websites themselves?

        • @axeology: My local JB Hi-Fi loads the website and saves a screenshot. I bet it varies from store to store (and even person to person) though!

  • great post -well worth a punt.Thanks

  • +2

Just got call from Burleigh Waters store (which I don't know where the store was), and the lady said they already had 12pcs on backorder.. OzB Pro in action :)

    • Are they ordering them in or did they cancel?

      • I just talked with the online chat. Apparently they have "no information about the item", "cannot backorder" and "am sorry but cannot help you"! Hmm.

        • -1

Please don't try to contact them. You will just increase the chances of getting everyones order canceled.

        • @videoman: We'd all like a scapegoat, and you're right - but I think they know exactly what's going on. Like with the Good Guys Google Mini deal!

        • @videoman: agreed!

        • +1

@Procyon: LOL. Yeah looks like TGG and HN have no idea how Amazon AU processes its online orders. Leave the payment status at "authorisation only" without actually charging the customers until the items are shipped as simple as that they cannot do it?

      • They ordering them

  • Lol that was quick 😁

  • I just bought the 3tB hard drive from JB Hifi for the same price as this…..FML!!!!

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/computers-tablets/all-computers--t…

  • What speed is the drive 5400?

    • It twists at 5400.

      • -1

        like we did last summer?

        • +1

No, like we did last platter.

  • can i take the HDD out to internal HDD

  • Nowhere near as good a deal, but HN currently has the Black 4TB Backup Plus Portable for $169. Can probably price match Officeworks to get $160.55.

  • +1

It's a snazzy looking drive if you're an Xbox kind of guy or gal.

  • Has anyone that got one had theirs ship yet?

  • +3

Got an email saying it is PRICING ERROR and offered refund.

    • Same here. Were you Harvey Norman or Joyce Mayne?

      • Harvey.

        • +1

Mine was through JM so seems to be same across the board…

    • Same here. Disappointing.

  • Yeah got the refund email too and an alternative offer to buy the 2TB for $99.

    • Same here. Bummer.

  • I just asked about a better price than the 4TB Procyon mentioned above (in lieu of the $99 for 2TB on the email), but they aren't willing to offer anything better than the listed price of $169

  • -1

They held cancellation till the weekend to slow refunding. sharp dealing from WHINGING CHEATING JERRY.

amazon would refund within 48 hours.

  • +1

I got my Joyce Mayne paypal refund already. Still a bit disappointing that they didn't honor the deal. It was probably still above cost price for them.

    • if they are doing emails today it isn't back in your account.

      • True, I just double checked my paypal and it says "We're processing your refund. Your money will be available on 10 January 2018.".

  • With an external HDD on Xbox does you existing internal drive still get used for game storage or does everything revert to the external drive?

  • Same email. I've gambled on some pricing errors before but this one annoys me a bit. I certainly didn't purchase thinking it was a pricing error.

This one feels like the correct price was put up but they decided after the fact that they couldn't go through with the orders. A 'pricing regret', if you will, rather than a 'pricing error'.

    Dunno, no way to know.

    • Plus resorting to BS legalese mumbo jumbo and no real offer of make up for taking our money for about a week save for a weak discount on half the item.

      Rather poorly handled.

      • a very nice way of saying shit customer interaction

  • Is anyone going to take up the $99 2TB deal? For Xbox use (branded gear) I think it's a reasonable deal.

If you originally purchased the 4GB version for general use because it was cheap per GB, then there are cheaper generic storage options around.

  • Anyone still waiting on the 2TB drive from Joyce Mayne?

Absolutely terrible customer service from them. Order still sitting there to be fulfilled after 10 days… and they don't communicate when approached via their 'contact us'. Very poor form. Also reflects poorly on Harvey Norman.

  • Expired :(

    • If you read this thread you'd realise no one got the deal.

    • +1

You came to the party real late but ChillBro is correct - they didn't honour the pricing error. They did, however, offer the 2TB for $99. Some took that up, including me. Not the cheapest for a 2TB, but good price for this particular drive. I liked the Xbox-styling on the drive so took them up on it, and it's now in use :)
