Planning to Sell My Used MacBook. Which Method Is Better?

Hi All,

I plan to sell my 2015 Macbook 12" that is seldom being used.
I am just wondering which way is the most effective and less risks (e.g. buyer falsely claims that not receiving the item or item is damaged etc.)
Ebay? Gumtree? Trading Post (if it still exists)??

Any suggestions and input are welcome!

Thank You!

ebay it, sell it on a Super Sunday to avoid seller's fees, if you want to avoid time wasters, make the listing

    • Buy it Now only
    • allow buyers to Make Offers
    • If you're paranoid, make it Pickup Only
    • Payment by Paypal only

Relist item every Sunday until it sells.

PayPal only combined with Pickup Only is a disaster waiting to happen. Cash or nothing!

The problem with Paypal is that you have no proof that the customer received the advertised item. Even if you post requiring a signature, all you can prove is that the customer received "something".. You might have sent a brick instead of a laptop.
As a result, Paypal will refund the buyer at your expense if the buyer complains.

If you Paypal and pickup, then you don't even have proof of delivery of something!

  • ask around your family & friends, request that they ask around their circles.

Gumtree cash on pickup, or eBay pickup only (and insist on cash - if they pay by PayPal, refund it).

You can't use PayPal for items that are picked up.

Personally I find every single time I try to sell an Apple product I get hounded by scammers. I'd say cash only and pickup only and put it on gumtree and eBay.

You might sell it for less but there's no risk involved.

If you're neara university put posters up there on the for sale boards.

  • Gumtree or Carousell, cash on pickup.

    • Who uses Carousell?

      • Younger crowd, uni students. I've sold plenty of gadgets there.

  • Facebook buy sell swap pages, marketplace gumtree, ebay?

  • gumtree pickup only, I sold mine there and went well since these are generally bought by uni students

  • The last time I used ebay was prob about 6 years ago, and after crap fees and PayPal stuff around I decided to not sell again on eBay; nothing has made me regret that decision, particularly the tales of people getting scammed (though rare as they may be).

These days I only sell anything through Gumtree as a classified listing, with no terms other than cash on pick-up-no trades and no shipping.

It’s not as fast or probably as convenient, in some respects, as eBay, but when you sell you’ve got cash in your hand, no fees and no loose ends to worry about; such as being dicked around by PayPal or a dodgy buyer.

I’ve sold maybe a couple of dozen things with no issues. If you’re wary you can meet people at the shops or something, but I’ve always done it at home b/c it’s easier for me and I think people feel more confident when they know where you live, as oppose to just being some total random. Granted, when the buyer leaves that’s it, there’s no returns. If it’s anything even remotely expensive I always show the buyer it’s working before they leave. It’s funny when folks say thanks that you do that, and they tell you they looked at something similar and the seller wouldn’t show it working. :/

Yeah, with Gumtree you’ll def get some dickheada who’ll either lowball you or waste your time, but that’s life, you can also get a bit more of a feel for people when you’re taking to them.

I’ve met with all stripes too and everyone I’ve sold has been friendly and kind. I mean, a business man on his way home from work getting a present for his kid, a young couple who looked like they were doing it tough but wanted to spoil the missus, to a young tradie. Those decent people def make up for the time wasters.

Yeah, it’s a bit silly and corny but honestly there’s something I like about knowing that something I’ve taken really good care of and loved is going to someone who will do the same. The other thing is, I’m not greedy, I always ask realistic prices and I’ll negotiate to sell. A lot of sellers don’t so they end up waiting for ages to sell something.

    I hope that helps :)
