  • How does this compare to e.g. Roku (Telstra TV) or Apple TV?

    • +7

can run Kodi/Plex and android TV apps

      • +11

no way apple tv is better…it is strongly restricted to the apple eco system. If you really like getting your media from itunes (or have an existing library there) then apple tv is the best.

But MiTv offers android eco system which means you can run whatever streaming apps in addition to accessing google play store. Further you can access your local files via media center features eg. kodi, which imo is the best thing on any tv media player device.

I am not sure where Roku fits in. I never used one, but my understanding is that it is also a restricted device with only some content providers enabled. I wouldn't use it when better devices are available for similar price.

        • +6

Hate to say this ('cause I'm a bit of a Apple hater), but I think you can get some variant of Kodi to run on the Apple TV now. That breaks you out of the ecosystem somewhat.

        • +1

          @AlbyDuck:

correct me if I am wrong, but I thought only way to do that is to jailbreak the device, no? (also if having dev account, but that's very rare for end user). This immediately puts the vast majority (and definitely anyone who asks the question of which is better) right out of the window.

        • Pretty easily side-loaded, however the performance on the apple tv with kodi is no where near what you get with the MiBox.

Have both an apple tv with kodi side loaded and the MiBox, no comparison at all.

Side note - Kodi is now available on xbox one and i have pretty good performance out of it

Speaking as a previously very enthusiastic NVIDIA Shield Android TV fan…

IMO, Apple TV 4K is definitely the superior player if you're really finicky about video playback. With the 'Match Content' setting that enables automatic refresh rate and SDR/HDR switching across all supported apps, everything displays perfectly whether it's Netflix, Infuse, iTunes video content etc.

At the moment (it may change) Android TV kind of sucks in this regard because Google can't seem to be arsed to fix this long running problem. When Apple adds Dolby Atmos support, their player will be the most feature-complete box on the market.

@recentlyjoinedozb: Like I said, I'm an Apple hater so I haven't paid much attention. MrMC is the name of the app I was thinking of, and it's on the Apple store. Not free however. Also, not official Kodi from what I can make out. MrMC is/was a respected Kodi developer though who was responsible for porting xbmc to the jailbroken Apple TV 2. I also found http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-sideload-install-kodi-on-ap… which talks about sideloading Kodi onto the Apple TV. Skimming through the article though, it looks like it's more trouble than it's worth.

        • +1

@recentlyjoinedozb, I don't think you understand the apple tv 4k at all. It's capable of far more than what you say.

        • +1

          @skittlebrau:
I have an NVIDIA Shield TV and a MiBox and have also tested the new Apple TV 4K.

The Apple TV 4K is hands down the best of all of them.
The refresh rate switching and content matching alone is a reason to swtich, but its also the speed of the interface and how it just plays content so effortlessly.

My NVIDIA Shield TV feels 90 % there. But its buggy as all get out.

        • you can load VLC from the app store for apple, and you can access stored movies on other devices on your home network.

IOS is a closed system for security purposes, and also vetting of apps, apple apps need to come from app store …… android has the playstore which is loose on vetting for security and you can load apps outside of the playstore.

        • If you're looking to use "free" streaming services you probably need to stick to something like this, but if you're looking to play media from your local network Infuse works brilliantly on the Apple TV 4 and 4K.

It's great combined with the apps on the iPhone and iPad.

          https://firecore.com/infuse

        • @Mitch889:

Clearly you have never experienced a great media center app like Kodi.

        • @recentlyjoinedozb: Used Kodi plenty of times

        • @Mitch889:

Well then, you would know the potential of Kodi in organizing your local library in the most beautiful and elegant customizable format.
Streaming is what Kodi is recently becoming more famous for in the internet, but that has nothing to do with Kodi's core functionality as a media player, and that is what Kodi is built and designed for. There is very little argument that Kodi is one of the best, if not the best, media centre apps ever.
Oh well, but I guess we can just agree to disagree. I just don't think you know what Kodi is all about, and it feels unfair for someone to read that and go, "oh yeah Kodi is that stuff you pirate stuff from" when really, Kodi is the the most cosutmizable, most feature filled, free and open source app out there.

        • @recentlyjoinedozb:

You totally missed my point though. The question I replied to asked how this compared to Apple TV. Using Infuse for iOS I get terrific organisation of my media and files, much like Kodi is capable of. I never said Kodi wasn’t capable or customisable.

        • @recentlyjoinedozb:
Is there a way to get more than 2 channel sound with Kodi?

      • +1

One benefit of the Apple TV (4th gen and up) over Android TV is native app support for ALL of the FTA catch up apps.

I believe you can side-load the standard Android versions (not Android TV) of those apps, but the support for higher bitrate 720p/1080p streaming, AC3 sound output, ease of use with remote control etc. are all lost.

Update; A quick google shows Android TV now has ABC iView and Seven apps (only).

        • its always a trade off if the company has targeted Australia as a market and that also determines where software developers put their effort in apps.

I think there would be less Goole TV devices in Australia than apple TV or Android phones / tablets.

Haven't seen Google TV devices in HN , Good Guys but I have apple TV, android phones and tablets, so google TV devices are user imported ….. if I'm a coder at channel 9, what platforms would my boss want me to code for ?

    • The Roku/Telstra TV is a very basic box with limited apps available where the MiBox runs android TV so heaps more apps available. MiBox can also operate as a chromecast to cast things from your phone/pc/whatever if you wanted.

    • +1

Apple TV is also a $200+ device as well more compareable to Nvidia Shield

    • Less wife friendly. If not a problem for you it’s great.

    • +1

Had an Apple TV in my previous apartment (November). It was fine as a basic media player, or for some shitty games, but overall I didn't find it much more useful than any cheaper box I've used in the past (it was like a faster, more responsive WDlive TV).

I can't comment on this particular device, but most Android boxes I have used have been far more compatible with network devices, and somewhat obscure video codecs.

I'll probably get some negs here - but the more open freedom of these Android boxes makes them superior to Apple's devices - though there basic function is arguably the same.

      • yes, they all the same thing, just depends how tech savvy you are and happy to integrate yourself or not tech savvy and just but an ecosystem off the shelf.

for tech savvy people this stuff is simple …. some people make money setting this up for non tech savvy users.

my son has apple TV and Android media player, I just have android media players.

By far the best tv box for under $100!

    • +1

Came here to say the same.

Best gadget satisfaction I've ever had.

  • Can you install certain apps on these to watch AU and O/S channels or movies?

    • Yes you can but bear in mind that not all apps are optimised for Android TV operating system but those can be sideloaded using the apk.

    • Freeview app or buy HDhomerun tuner

  • How do you watch on this ? What apps do you need to download?

    • Comes pre-installed with Netflix if that helps.

      Check out this video:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3VQ8Ul0Kyw

    • +1

There is also an official (unofficially release) Iview app native to android tv boxs that works with the remote. you can find it on APKmirror.

      https://ausdroid.net/2017/10/28/abc-working-iview-app-androi…

    • Think of this as an Android phone plugged up to your TV. You can download apps that display your favorite programs (Netflix, Stan, ect), or stream from a browser (internally, or from another device)

Download a torrent app on it, set the torrent to download sequentially, and you can stream the torrent immediately from your favorite torrent site directly on the device (for all those loyalty free programs of course…)

      • I dont know if i have this mibox or its predecessor but i found the google play store being android tv quite limiting. Like you dont have access to browsers for download like firefo. And chrom etc. The only one i could download for streaming didnt work.

Meanwhile the apps are android tv and missing main android apps that the mrs wanted. Specifically drama fever which is wha t i tried streaming for her as she likes her k drama.

That's my only issue. I tried kodi but having necer5 used it before all the youtube how to guides to get drama fever working just never did for me…

        • I'm somewhat sure I had Firefox on one, but can't be positive.
Admittedly I never required a huge amount of apps, but the ones I did want I found.

From messing around with my cars head unit, I've found that work a little tinkering you should be able to install any apk on something like this - though the apps scaling may prevent them from being usable

  • Are free contents available on this box? I.e. shows and movies

    • +1

No unless you install Kodi build, Terrarium app etc.

    • +2

      Nope

    • +3

Yep just download Kodi and install the Covenant add-on. Plenty of guides online.

      • Isn’t covenant dead? I just went to genesis reborn and finally have an add-on that actually finds (fully legal) content.

        • +2

          (fully legal)

          yeah right!

    • Thank you all

    • Catch up TV

    • ABC iView and SBS Ondemand (great movie selection and high-def), for a start.

      • Are either of those directly available for install or do you have to sideload them?

        • +1

iView was direct, but they changed it. Side-load is easy and Google allows it, unlike Apple or Roku.

For SBS there is a 3rd-party app, or Kodi plugin.

      • I just got one of these yesterday but can't find any catch up TV apps other than tenplay - anyone got any ideas?

        • I have a old version of this from China. You can install a apps market so you can all the apps there or, you can find the APK for the app you are looking at, then install it separately.

  • How does this compare to Nvidia Shield? (I don't do any gaming).

    • +1

Nvidia is more powerful, but twice the cost

    • +2

If you don't do gaming then not much of a difference, the OS and the interface is pretty much the same, save yourself another $150.

      • Thanks :)

      • i can understand people gaming on phone when on the train or waiting for coffee, or sitting in the toilet at work, and you have touch screen which these games are optimised for, but when at home infront of a 50"+ TV do you want to play the same games with a joystick or air mouse …. ?

I think of them as media players, not gaming platforms.

    • While the Nvidia absolutely trounces it in hardware, i've found the user experience on the MiBox to be far superior than kodi installed on a shield, whil i have both, i cannot recommend the premium you pay for the shield over the MiBox, especially when the software experience is actually better on the MiBox

      • Which one is more responsive? I really hate the lag when switching between apps and loading up, etc.

        • +1

MiBox > Xbox one > Nvidia shield > Apple tv (Specifically to kodi responsiveness)

    • if you want to use it to watch FTA TV via a USB tuner or HD HomeRun it wont do proper de-interlacing.
      the nvidia shield does

  • How does it compare with this: https://www.lightinthebox.com/h96-max-android-7-1-1-tv-box-r…?
This only has quad-core and 2GB RAM. The H96 Max has Octa Core and 4GB RAM.

    • +4

This is Android TV, and the other is Android Tablet.

MiBox Android TV supports NetFlix HD, Android Tablet is limited to 720P

        • +4

Android Tablet OS, not Android TV OS

      • -5

No its not, its a TV BOX.
Did you even check out the link given?

        Sorry….damn net playing up.

    • +3

What asa79 meant was that this box runs the official Android TV operating system however the other box that you linked runs an Android version that is actually developed for tablets/mobile phones.

Basically Comparing with your other box, MiBox 3 has:
      (1) A better interface with ease of navigation
      (2) A better remote control that feels nice and has a mic for voice search
      (3) An inbuilt Google 4K Chromecast

      • -1

        Oh OK. Thanks.
        I get it now.
        :-)

    • -2

Do not buy generic Chinese TV boxes.. they give you endless grief
If you would like to play with one just buy a cheap box like this S905 powered unit https://www.gearbest.com/tv-box/pp_951331.html and use Libreelec on it

      • Wow, your link is good price. Any reviews from u?

        • No i did not buy this particular unit but they are all the same under the covers.
If you intend to use it for Netflix then I can tell you it doesn't work. SHould be good for youtube, kodi, etc.

        • @ChaLuo: Wouldnt't touch a unit like this with just the 1gig of ram, especially for kodi.

        • @Ethernia: err, why not? Video decoding doesn't take up much memory. What's wrong with 1G for a TV box? It's not Windows after all.

        • @decr: Currently all my Kodi boxes use between 700m-1.1g of memory for kodi+ playing a video. I'm sure it uses more ram because my units have more ram, but on a unit with just 1gig it would be pushing it

        • @ChaLuo: I don't think they really are. They all have different wifi chipsets for starters. Makes a big difference if you want to install LibreElec, because only some chipsets are supported. They come with a variety SoCs. s905, s905x, s905w, S912… all with different capabilities. Some have Widevine (sp?) support which means you can have Netflix up to 1080p. Most don't. Some have third-party ROMs which greatly improve the user experience.

Having said that, you're always taking a bit of a risk with quality control and manufacturer support. Oh, and I agree with @Ethernia. I wouldn't get one with less than 2 Gig of RAM.

      • No netflix on libreelec

  • +3

You can get a USB to Ethernet adaptor to give this LAN connectivity as well if you dont want to use Wireless

    • +2

Correct - although, not all of them work.

I have this one and it works perfectly:

      https://www.amazon.com.au/UGREEN-Ethernet-1000Mbps-Nintendo-…

      • Yep - the Ugreen one is excellent.

        • Do these definitely work? I purchased a different brand one that someone swore worked fine with the Mibox and it'll only give me 6mpbs at best. It's not the adaptor as I can plug it into my desktop or MAC and it'll max out at about 95mbps.

        • usb data transfer is driven by the cpu so throughput is limited by if its usb 2 or 3 and how powerful a cpu you have.

      • +1

Yes, Ugreen is the one of the very few that work with this box. Don't go with USB 3.0 version though because this box has a USB 2.0 port so buying USB 3.0 would be an overkill. Go with this instead:

        https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Ugreen-USB-Ethernet-10-100-1…

Or this, if you want to buy local:

        https://www.amazon.com.au/UGREEN-Ethernet-Adapter-Nintendo-C…

        • does it support gigabit speeds ?

        • -1

          @dh16: No, only upto 100Mbps.

        • +2

@dh16: USB 2.0 provides a maximum throughput of up to 480Mbps. When coupled with a 1000Mbps Gigabit Ethernet adapter

      • +1

https://www.gearbest.com/network-cards/pp_449964.html this one works, I got for like $3.50 on sale a while ago. not as good as ugreen, but works with mi box

        • I tried a different cheapo version and it seemed to increase the latency and speeds were significantly reduced. Hopefully this one doesn't do that.

        • +1

@batrarobin: I just upgraded to a UniFi AC Pro so might move to Wireless AC instead if it works out to be better

    • that increases the total cost having to buy a usb to ethernet adapter.

      • +1

Wireless ac is still pretty fast

  • What Power adapter are you guys choosing for this?

These are the options it has:

EU Adapter US Adapter UK Adapter

    • Just realised the answer:

For Other Country: FREE US/AUS/UK high quality plug

will be packaged in your order based on your shipping address!

    • +1

      Choose US.

      • It only lets me choose the EU adaptor. The other two are not selectable.

      • +2

I find US plugs dont sit in adapters very good, I think the EU plug is more firm.

      • +1

yeah, you can bend pins on the US power packs, with the EU ones you need to use travel adapter and power pack sometimes works loose.

there is no Xiaomi AU power pack for these units as they are for the US and EU market.

wish they would at least ship with CN plug, it's close enough to ours that you don't need to bend pins or use travel adapter.

  • +2

Bit the bullet and bought another one. Now I have one for each kids TV

    • What apps do you installed?

      • NetFlix, Youtube Kids, Kodi
