  • NBN support?

    • Interestingly yes. I thought it does not come with modem function, but my NBN works perfect while connecting this to the NBN box. I did not use any modem in between. My home use HFC. Big surprise!

You must be confused, I've owned one of these…… It's just a router. No VDSL. No RJ11 socket.

I sold it off quickly as it only has 100Mb ethernet. No gigabit.

  • 300 Mbps on a 2.4 Ghz?

Sure if this was deployed on the moon. In a row of houses where every man-and-his-dog has 2.4 Ghz operating at full power? I don't think so.

  • Anyone know a reasonably effective range on this? Looking for a cheap solution that is better than the netgear n300 WNR2000v5

    • -1

      I'd avoid this.

2.4 Ghz only WiFi? No good. Look for a dual-band router with 2.4 Khz & 5.0 Ghz radio.

Depends on the use case. If you have no neighbours or congestion nearby - 2.4Ghz is perfect as it penetrates walls better than 5Ghz.

        • +1

Yes. Funny how people just assume 5GHz is better, despite knowing absolutely nothing about it.

        • Yep my 5ghz connection is rubbish, I'm always using 2.4

        • @manic:
          Funny indeed.

Fortunately, I do know what I'm talking about (2.4 Ghz vs 5.0 Ghz).

2.4 Ghz may be able to penetrate walls further but a lot of houses are, what, -3 to -5 dBm loss? Sure. 2.4 Ghz may have longer distance? Sure, if you open up all the data rates.

I've done several deployments (city). I have no choice but to power down (or shut down) 2.4 Ghz because it was just unusable. 80% CU? No thank you.

Thankfully, newer wireless clients nowadays have their "logics" reprogrammed so if 2.4 Ghz and 5.0 Ghz are presented, the logic chooses 5.0 Ghz as a priority over 2.4 Ghz. I'd look at statistics daily and I've got 80% using wireless clients on 5.0 Ghz.

I have a site that sits in the middle of a forest and the nearest place with "wireless" is about 10 kms. Sure, they have 2.4 Ghz enabled. But again, if the wireless clients are given the "choice", they tend to stick to 5.0 Ghz first.

      • Depends on whether any of your devices receive 5Ghz. If not then there's zilch benefits to a dual band router.
