Hi. Thanks for posting this. Just to clarify regarding your valid point. We have been told by BenQ Australia that all Australian delivered units are the updated version mentioned in the links above. The fix has already been applied. It has been about 3 weeks since we received this new model and in this time we have sold close to 50 units. No complaints from any customer so far regarding any issue. In fact, we have had zero returns of this model to date

      • Thanks. There are a few of us who still play 3d movies, and the problems referred to in the avsforum link were a worry. The special price of $2499 mentioned in an early review does not seem to have eventuated, since as far as I know no Australian stores had stock by end January, when the special price expired. See https://www.stereo.net.au/reviews/review-benq-w1700-4k-uhd-h….

    I swear i thought it said $241.9

It has an actual 3840x2160 DMD? I remain sceptical.

Edit - aaand two minutes of Googling later…
    http://www.projectorcentral.com/4k-dlp-projectors.htm

It does not have a true 4k chip. It's still using some bullshit image shifting trickery.

    • +2

Yep, came here to specifically mention this. All reviews mention it's really good trickery, but nonetheless.

I'm still saving/dreaming for the Sony VPL-VW285E, I was hoping post-CEDIA that others would have jumped to catch up with Sony on that one. As it is, the w1070 will live for another day in the lounge room!

      • +2

Good ole W1070 just keeps on giving. I don't really have any 4K content (or a monster GPU) yet anyway…

        • +2

Truly one of the greatest things I've ever spent money on ~$1000 for 120" of glorious, glorious screen.

    • +1

Yes this one doesn't have 3840x2160 DMD. However, it doesn't mean it isn't UHD. It's certified as UHD, I believe. JVC e-Shifts (whilst significantly better colours and contrast than these cheap DLPs) don't display 8.3million pixels. I think they display about 4million (half way between FHD and UHD)

A lot of people get caught up in HOW the projector produces UHD, and not WHAT it actually produces.

In saying that, this is probably bottom of the barrel of 4K projectors. The Optoma UHD60/65 uses a better DMD (that one has about 4.15million pixels and uses 'trickery' to display 8.3million).

I think we're quite a while off true UHD chips at a price-point less than like $10k or something.

My w1070 is doing well. I'll probably hold off a few years once UHD projectors mature/become more affordable.

      • +1

Care to explain or link to material on how it’s UHD but less than 4k? I’m just curious and morbidly scared of gimmicks. Ta!

        • +2

Basically it produces two lower resolution images, projects one, and then shifts one a tiny bit up and to the side to create the extra pixels. It creates input lag and plenty of picture artifacts like moire because it takes time to do the processing, and the alignment is never perfect. This particular DMD also has a bit of an advantage, in that it's true native resolution is 2716x1528. So yes, you do get a higher than Full HD res, but it isn't actually 4k. It's 4k-ish.

        • @thatguyfromthatplace: Awesome, thank you.

I'd need to see it happening before buying. Years ago when I watched movies on DLP projectors I remember being distracted by separating RGB in my eyes' peripherals. Perhaps you know what I mean. Perhaps it's just another thing to get used to.

I have been looking into 4K projectors this week for an in-law. This seems to be the cheapest model but isn't real 4K. It flickers these mirrors really fast to project 4 1080p images to achieve 4K. The Optoma's are also not real 4K.

Even looking at the Sony VL285/385s that are $8000 & $11000 they aren't without their flaws. Sony had crippled the hdmi on both machines so that the bandwidth is 10-13gbps which means you cannot watch 4K HDR at over 30Hz (even their sony ps4 pro is unsupported in many games cuz 60hz). So any signal over will downgrade the HDR10 to 8bit leaving the color looking washed out and awful.

My advice is to wait another year or two tops if you want real 4K that is affordable, or if you don't mind the image quality and trickery - get one of these.

  • Interested in this unit, i'll need a 15m HDMi cable from what I read HDMI copper cables cant do 4k at this length, might have to bite the bullet and buy a HDMi Fibre Optic hybrid, not cheap tho.

    • Do you need 4K at 60 FPS, or just for movies (24 FPS)? You might be OK with a very thick cable or one that has an active chipset like Redmere (though I heard the older active chipsets don't work with HDR 4K at 60 FPS). Have you researched Monoprice cables? You can often get them on Amazon cheaper than from monoprice (because postage).

      • I found what I'll need here the Ruipro Fibre Optic does it all using 4k, gets good reviews i see, not cheap but apparently it works.
