Cutting Power Cords on Kerbside Rubbish

During the kerbside rubbish collection I have often put out some old electrical items - lamps, vacuum cleaner etc.

Each time someone has come along and cut off the power cables and left the rest of the item.

Anyone know why someone would do that?

Is it the whole cable? I know you can sell the copper in it for $$$.

    • Yeah they take the whole cable. I threw out all my old copper when I replaced all my old plumbing too oops… That stuff's worth bothering with?

Especially with a chord how much could it be worth!?

      Seems bizarre

Not much on it's own but doing it to several appliances every street in your suburb? You could make ~$100

Problem is that most yards no longer accept scrap copper because of the high rate of theft.

Some councils send workers to do it to stop people stealing the goods to reuse or resell.

    * cord

Copper. Same reason they used to smash CRTs for the deflection yoke.

Any idea how much one cable is worth? Maybe I'll start hanging onto mine and driving round the neighbourhood cutting other people's

    • Jack all. But steal a few thousand of them….

    • Copper wire is currently worth $1.50 - $2.00 per kilo as scrap source.

    • About 5 cents each

It can also be a couple of other reasons:
Sometimes it's spite - "I don't want it, but I don't want anyone else to fix it and make money from it"
My dad always used to do it to prevent any accidental mishaps. Most items put out there have some sort of fault (otherwise it'd be put up for sale), so it prevents those that have absolutely no knowledge from just picking it up and plugging it in to test it. I know it's easy to put another plug on, but 90% of people would see that and not bother. Those that take the time to fix it probably have more awareness not to electrocute themselves (not always the case).

I took some recently for some power supplies I was building.

Maybe for safety reasons. If the item has been outside water would of have gotten into the electronics and make it unsafe. They cut the cable so that people who don't know better don't electrocute theme selves. Or they just want to use the cable for a personal project.
