Need Help with Home Theatre Setup

Hi Guys,

I am trying to setup a home theatre in my house. To put things in perspective, the room size is 3.7m x 3.2m

I am interested in getting Focal Sib Evo 5.1.2 Atmos Speakers coupled with a Onkyo receiver. I am yet to finalize on the screen. With a viewing distance of 3m, I reckon a projector would be an overkill.

My overall budget is $8000. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks.

  • How many people are you planning on hosting?

    • no hosting. it's too small a room to host. Just a couple of four people at the max at a time

      • +1

3.7m*3.2m is about the same side as a nsw gaol cell. A couple of people won’t be comfortable watching a film in a room that small.

        • I was thinking the same. 3 seater couch would take up a good 2.5m x 1m

          @Spackbace:

A 12sqm room will feel tight after it’s furnished.

        • @whooah1979:

Or look hilarious with just a couch and a big screen. Would look like somewhere you put the kids when the adults are partying

      • a couple of four people

        So 8 people?

        • It was meant to be OR

  • With a viewing distance of 3m, I reckon a projector would be an overkill.

Yes… and turn the room into a hot house!

  • +1

Why do you need it as a home theatre room then? Why not put the same stuff in the living room with a really good, big TV?

I hate the idea of utilising a room for the same purpose as another room. Turn it into a study or kids play room.

    • It wouldn't be a home theater then would it

      • Sorry, didn't realise rooms had big neon signs designating what they had to be.

        • I get what you're saying. I like to watch movies with experience. and a closed room is the best way of achieving the same.

        • @sbrulz:

Which wall is the couch going against? 3.7m or the 3.2m?

Just trying to work out layout etc

If you haven't already, check out ZReviews on YouTube. It's a great channel dedicated to all things speakers. He also has a Guide that lists his favourite gear. It's all subjective but he seems to know his stuff.

third paragraph "My budget is 8K"
fourth paragraph "My overall budget is $6000"
    I am confused

  • +1

    blow 8k on 75" OLED

    no need for speakers

  • I think for 6-8K you could get better speakers and a better amp…..also factor in cabling prices - any additional ports you may require installed in the wall, powerboards etc. Then you want some sound deadening on the walls - blackout curtains.

My theatre room is 3840 x 3740 and find it fits a family of 4 in pretty well.
For a room like that though you need a short throw projector to give you a decent picture size or purchase a separate one.
We have a JVC X500 with a short throw lens attached which gives us a width of 3.2m for widescreen movies and really makes a difference, without that though, not even close.
No issues with heat in the room and the viewing distance and picture size isn't uncomfortable.
Onkyo is a good brand, I have an older model running 7.2 sound, but maybe check out Denon or Marantz as those are quite good.

Have a look at www.avsforum.com and check out the cinema builds thread, there are some crazy home theatre builds in there with rooms smaller than yours, will give you a good idea of what you can do.

    My build - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/337261

Maybe go for a 90-100" screen? But as mentioned before, the smaller room might get a bit warm with a projector so perhaps a little A/C split system would help.

    Good luck!

I have a slightly bigger room ( 4.5 x 4m) with a BenQ W1070 and have no issues with heat however use Central Evap Cooling on hot days (over 30+ degrees). Other days, no issues.

I have been using it for around 3 years and it is perfect for me.

      Cheers

      • Similar situation with us. Our family area air con keeps the room cool during really hot days or if the room is quite full with people. Normally the heat from the projector doesn't affect the room that much.

  • IMO, a Projector in that room will be OK.

You can always move the projector forward hence get a smaller screen which is around ~ 90" - 100"

    There is a cheap BenQ W1700 4K (3840 x 2160p 60Hz) e-shift projector around $2K (refurbished) worth considering.

Edit: I think the Focal speakers are not powerful enough for that room. I would recommend a bigger speaker setup. You can go for a Polk or Klipsch 5.1 setup and then get 2 ceiling speakers if the budget permits.

    Cheers

    • Wow, the 4K projectors are coming down in price. Thanks for the heads up!

      • Yes. That is my next Projector. When the bulb of the BenQ W1070 dies, I just add cash and get this.

Please note, that this is not "Native-True" 4K as the site states. However it is similar to the cheaper DMD 4K E-shift projectors.
Going by some of the reviews, it is not as good as the Native 4K image from other expensive projectors, however it is pretty close. But then you are not paying $10K+

        This is also a 3D projector and by claims from others, ~ 4K 60p @ 4:2:0 ~ 18Gbps which is impressive for a cheapie.

I think your current plan is perfect. A 5.1.2 mid-range system and a 65 inch OLED. Done. Do not over do it less it suck the joy out of ownership.

Oh. Room treatment. Don't forget room treatment.

    • I have a slightly larger room and use it for a HT.

I don't use any room treatment and it sounds fantastic.

It is about speaker & amp selection and speaker/subwoofer placement.

If you want to get extra pedantic and have money to burn, then treat the room. But treating has to be done correctly otherwise you will go backwards.

      Cheers

      • I would advocate a lower end system and room treatment. The overall cost ends up lower.

Speaker placement is an obvious and I even have a professional sound mic and software for calibration.

Still end up costing me less and sounding better than another system I auditioned. (And I'm talking high end. The type that sets up in your house).

        • What would you consider as a lower end system?

Edit: I assume that you use REW for Software Calibration?

          Cheers

        • @vinni9284:
I have speakers well in their five figures for a stereo pair. I'd consider anything in the four figures mid-range. I don't venture out of mid-range for surround systems anyway.

I use Dayton Audio Omnimic V2. I'm not very good at it so u get help from the HiFi community.

First thing I learnt after getting seriously into the hobby some 10 years ago was a dingy old $3,000 system sounds better than a $30,000 system in a bad room. I know this because mine was the latter.

        • @tshow:

Oh I see. Fair enough; obviously you have experienced the difference.

I have spent a bit on my room and have gone separates. (for each 2 Channel & HT ~ not both integrated by electronically controlled HT bypass filters in the HT preamp) However I have not gone to room treatment. Possibly I should look more into it. But then I am very happy with my setup.

Good to chat with another enthusiast.
I'm sure you'll enjoy it every time like me when you crank it up.

          Cheers

        • @vinni9284:
I did but everything is in storage atm. Downsized the house a little too much. Can't wait to have the space to set it all up again. It was a dream to listen to though.

And good idea to keep the 2 channel and HT set up separate. Bad experience with the electronics and burnt a whole lot of money.

Room treatment, try it. Corner bass traps, a few choice spots for foam pads on ceiling and walls. Shouldn't cost more than $300 (at least that's how much it starts at. Its a monster than can grow out of control).

        • @tshow:

Re: Bass Traps, did you go floor to ceiling with all 4 corners? Just that alone seems like about $600 (1.8m x 4) to buy going by one site:

          https://www.selby.com.au/2x-selby-art-dunlop-foam-bass-traps…

          What seller would you recommend?

          Cheers

        • @vinni9284:
I bought those exact ones. I did floor to ceiling for aesthetics.

They work well but spray lots of insecticide barrier spray on the walls before you stick the traps on. The redbacks love hiding behind them. Also don't do permanent attachment, you'll have to reapply insecticide every 6 months.

        • @tshow:

          Thanks for the tip.

          I'll look into it.

          Cheers

  • Cheers…!!!

  • Iam wondering whether soundproofing the walls has any positive impact on the sound quality in the room, I have the option to do this whilst the room is being built for $2k. Looking at the comments above on the room treatment might be a less costly option. The media room sits between the powder room and the garage so noise is a secondary consideration.

Further advice on similar size room here OP:

    • +2

Maybe indirectly in the most marginalized way.

Sound proofing doesn't change the texture of the room. If you mean sound treatment then yes.

Ever wondered why it's much easier to discern voices and pretty much every sound in a movie? Room treatment.

      • I thought it was due to douchebags talking during silent important bits…

      • Thanks, the builder has suggested this - rockwool SoundScreen R2.0 batts to Media Room, it's meant more for preventing the sound from going outside from what I understand as it will be installed inside the wall and ceiling.

        • +1

          Yes.

Sound proofing = prevent sound leaking and bothering people outside.

Sound treatment = prevent sound echoing and muddling sound for people inside.

        • @tshow: thanks
