Telstra $49pm for 12mths for 25GB Data, Online Only Offer

643

Similar deal to JB HI FI's but i think its for new customers only. Pretty good deal considering the next one up is $99pm for 30GB of data

Offer says online only but might be able to get it in store if you ask.

Inclusions are:
25GB of data
Unlimited calls and text
No international calls from what i can see.

Still not as good as what Optus or Vodafone offer but still a big increase of data from their old plans

Make sure you barter with the sales rep - Optus doing 30GB $40 12 month plan. They'll probably match the data but not the price.

    • +2

I tried to haggle with them to get this deal via online chat, as I am an existing customer that is not in contract. I told them I was looking to port over to Optus, they wouldn't budge and similar plan they can only offer is the $99/30GB plan. Ridiculous!

      • +2

Yep pretty much same as me they didn’t care

      • +2

I had a similar thing happen to me too recently. They actually offered me a plan that was worst than what I was on

Ended up going to Vodafone. They don’t seem to care about existing customers

        • +1

I was shocked when my mum told me she was paying $80 a month for 1GB of data out of contract.
Then the sales bloke tries to sell me (on behalf of my mum) 2GB of data for $50 a month.
Ended up with 15GB of data for $40 a month.
They must con a lot of older less savvy people into thinking they're getting a good deal.

      • online chat trash for discounts

  • +1

Also says for new customers only still

    • +1

Yeah just edited it. thanks mate :)

    • Any current customers been successful getting on this?

      • only managed to get 15gb total data as an existing customer

    • +2

I'm sitting here on $40/month for 5gb. Ive seen several 10gb+ bonuses for new customer deals go by. Pretty sad it makes me want to leave and come back to be able to sign up for these deals.

      • Oh wow…I started on 7GB about a year and a half ago…optus upgraded me to 10GB without even telling me. That is kinda unfortunate. You could always call up asking if you need to do anything to allow you to port out to optus and see if they try to retain you. :P

      • +2

Ummmm go on live chat and complain, but do it nicely :) I'm a long time customer and always change to whatever plan is on special and they just reset the 12 months. Currently I'm paying $39 a month for 15Gb, on a 12 month sim-only contact (including 6 months free apple music).

      • +1

Yes please go on livechat and complain to them, you will get bumped up re: data

  • Will we ever get another $39 plan with decent data?

    • Define 'decent data'

If you are talking about the black Friday deal where you got 10GB of data for $39, this is 25GB (potentially 30GB if you ask - they seem to be chucking a bonus 5GB on everything atm) for only $10 per month more.
Have an ABN? See if you are eligible for the $10 (port in) discount + 5GB bonus data. Not sure if it's eligible on this offer though.

      • +5

To me decent data is unlimited data

        • But then… what happens to the nbn?

        • +2

          @idonotknowwhy:

If Telstra get their way then the NBN is skipped and everyone moved straight onto their wireless solutions.

        • +1

@idonotknowwhy: If they put unlimited data on Telstra 4G all of a sudden the NBN would be fast by comparison.

That's the unfortunate thing with wireless, it's like everyone shouting in a room to communicate with someone on the other side. Very efficient when there are a couple of you, terrible when everyone's doing it simultaneously and frequently.

If you want to download serious amounts of data, you're always going to need a fixed connection. I can see people who never stream or download video (or do it infrequently) getting away with wireless though.

      • What's the relevance of the ABN?.

        • +1

The relevance of the ABN is to sign up to a business plan. However, @ozchobie just said that there is no port in discount to this promo. Should be eligible for the bonus 5GB though - can bump it to 10GB if you have more than 1 service with Telstra.
The business plan (if available) normally comes with more inclusions. Minor benefits that can make a lot of difference.

        • @pennypincher98: what is the 5gb bonus?

        • @hibijibis: either this or it seems to be included on all business plans if you say "there's a $10 discount and 5GB bonus data right?" > sometimes you don't even have to say this though.
5GB of data got added for me automatically as it is a 'current offer going on'.

No idea how people got 10GB only with one service though.

        • @pennypincher98: ok. thanks. i also have a prepaid wifi so maybe i can ask for a multi discount.

        • @hibijibis: I also have a prepaid wifi but they werent willing to budge anything unless you commit to a data plan for me. Saved me time signing up though.

        • @hibijibis:
No multi discounts if you have pre paid services, must be contracted

      • No port in discount on this promo I asked earlier

    • They did one recently.

Im currently on $39 per month for 20GB

      • Wow really? That's awesome.

I was on $39 for 7GB, tried multiple times to haggle for more data on $39 but they wouldn't budge.
I would have been happy with even 1-2gb more.

I have now ported out to ALDI waiting for a good Telstra deal again, but it seems like they only want to promote the $49 plan.

        • +1

Yeah i think i got lucky. They were doing a $10 off their $49 plan for 10gb and had an extra 5gb promo going as well. So i originally i had 15gb for $39 and then telstra had a random offer of a bonus 5gb for their users about a month in to my contract so i contacted their online team, sent the link and they gave me another 5gb = 20gb :)

  • +4

Still not as good as what Optus or Vodafone offer

If we are going on simply how many GB of data you get, or even the $9 a month (assuming you can't negotiate a better price) then Optus/Vodafone networks offer more
The problem is Telstra's service leaves Optus in the dust in terms of speed. Vodafone's regional/rural coverage would be laughable if I didn't have to try and get a connection from it..

Needless to say, Telstra has the monopoly to charge whatever they want for rural/regional customers as quite frankly there is no other option.

    • +1

I get what your saying 100%.

For me im in the city 99% of the time so any network would be fine for me (I'm with Vodafone). If i need to travel regionally i'd get a prepaid sim card from Telstra and divert to that sim card to use until i get back. Probably gonna be cheaper doing it that way then spending more for less data then what I can get with other providers.

These days regional coverage with Vodafone is mostly ok in some areas until you get far far away, then Telstra is really the only option, they are only ones that can provide a smooth experience.

Hopefully when the Mobile Blackspot program is complete consumers will have more choice, more competition means better prices and better inclusions.

      • Make sure roaming is switched on. When your in country and have no Vodafone coverage…… you should automatically fall back onto the Optus 3G network.

You will know if you have, as your phone should display "Vodafone AU R" instead of "Vodafone AU"

Isn't the $59 Pixel 2XL deal still running? If so extra $10pm for a bit less data and a $1400 phone over 24 months

    • Haha yeah I'll gladly trade $240 and 5GB of data a month for a Pixel 2 which can be sold for ~$1000 (apparently)

      • I am so considering doing that!

      • I sold Pixel 2 xl for $1000 on gumtree.

    • Agree, I'm typing on p2xl. Do not really understand why ppl do not get that instead. Even you do not want the phone sell it and you pay way cheaper for the data.

    • +1

Where is this $59 pixel 2xl plan - cannot find anywhere on telstra site?

    • Yes still on. Their porting last night almost took 1.5hrs and had to cancel because of that reason

Merrylands JB hifi has plenty of stock with earphones included

the JB deal is $49/month with 25gb data and $200 gift card - for reference. significantly better deal.

  • i'm on $40 for 52gb with vodafone, student deal still 50$ if anyone is looking & not a student

    • +2

      52gb…? or 25?

      • +1

        52gb :)

  • Hows is virgin mobile network in metro area?
$60 plan is on 20% discount - sounds good to me.

    • Virgin runs on the Optus network. So it should be just as good as Telstra in metro areas.

  • Thanks for the post. Perfect for me.
In the country where I can tell the difference between Aldi and Telstra, and no landline to get internet. 25GB will be enough data to run the house wifi from another datasim too.

  • JB hifi also has this deal instore with 200 gift card

Edit.. Oops didnt see the previous post

  • +1

People really need to stop comparing these Telstra deals with other providers and saying blah blah Optus give you x amount more for less.

Optus/Vodafone etc are far inferior providers. With Telstra you get the best coverage on the market, no point comparing cheaper prices for services that are inferior. Its like saying oh here is a 65 inch Sony Samsung TV for $1,500….Oh but you can get the 65 inch Hisense TV for $1,450, different level of product, no point comparing!

    • -1

Side note - a high end Hisense is probably better than a low end Sony or Samsung in terms of picture quality.

      • +1

        You missed the point

        • Do you get a TV with a Telstra plan? ;)

    • Coverage doesn't really matter too much if you live near a city though, so for some it's a valid complaint.

      • I live central and i work in a brand new building in Docklands. I have been with Vodafone, optus and now Telstra. I work on the 33rd floor in the docklands building and dont get coverage with optus and vodafone. Telstra i get service in the building and all the lifts etc

  • Any deals going for a plan with phone with Telstra?

  • +1

Not a deal when you can sign up at JB for the same price, and get a $200 voucher….

  • -2

Just changed over to this offer as an existing Telstra customer.
I can appreciate that there might be better offers out there but, given that my existing 12-month BYO plan (8Gb for $45/month) was within 2 weeks of ending, this deal seemed like a 'no brainer' to me.
20 mins on the live chat and it was all sorted.

Thanks to the original poster. Cheers!

    • +1

another 20 mins down to JB and get $200 voucher…

      • According to the previous deal "You must port in from a different provider to get this offer."
In 20 mins - really? Change mobile provider, get number activated, go to a store, then get ported back on to the Telstra network?
I admit that not doing so, and thus missing out on the gift voucher is a bit un-Ozbargainer - but I'm still in a much better position than previously.

Will definitely try harder to be more HARDCORE OzBargain-er next time…

        • Took me 10mins to port account to kogan. waited one day. Ported back and got $200 voucher after ~20 mins in JB.

Anyway it's all about how much money you want to save. You can also go on chat and ask for an extra 5gb. Just say you got an email about "thanks" etc etc.

        • @OnlinePred: Cheers. Good to know for next time.
Hopefully someone else can use that to their advantage.

  • +1

Talk to them over live chat to negotiate a deal. I got this 25gb plan for $39pm quite easily.

    • Good for you. Could you please tell me how to start a live chat.

    • Any tips? I have tried the same and always get a stone-wall "We offer what's on the website and that's it"

      • Really? The last few times I’ve spoken to them on chat I’ve always been offered a better deal. Just start off saying you’re interested in their BYO plans (give them a $ range), and then they’ll suggest one to you. Then say that there are other competitors offering a similar deal for the same price, and then they’ll drop in the $10 discount. You can either do that, or ask for more data.

@j4ck - no I was not an existing customer, and it only took one attempt.

        • You must have a way with your words..

As soon as I mention anything to do with a comparison, they drop in a copy paste paragraph which essentially says they are a premium provider hence prices may be higher.

After reading your original comment here I had about a 20 - 30 minute conversation with a rep who absolutely refused to budge on anything and repeatedly told me they are only allowed to offer what is on the website. I asked to speak to somebody who could negotiate and was told nobody can help. Mind you the whole time the rep was pushing for me to sign up with one of the published plans.

This is about the 4th time i've tried through live chat as well.. maybe it's me :(

        • @FadeToBlack: Wow, unlucky! PM me your chat transcript and maybe I can see if there’s anything you can say differently. I’ve had no issues negotiating deals each time I jump on live chat.

        • @gettem: It appears that you do not have PMs enabled.

        • @Yoga: Oops, my bad. It's enabled now.

    • Were you an existing customer? What did you say? And how many tries did it take?

  • According to the details on the site, this offer end today "26/03".
