  Good browsing/downloading hygiene goes a long way but iirc but defender was one of the few AVs that was resistant to some of the recent ransomware shit fight.
  
  Is the only AV I've come across that isn't closer to malware in terms in intrusive and resource hungry.
  
  Can usually get a free 1-6 month trial by googling. For me anything that makes accessing my personal computers data/contents more difficult is worth using.
