Travelling to Hong Kong in October 2018 for 7days - Need help for the itinerary

Hey guys,

I'll be traveling with my family 2 adults and 2 children 9 and 10 to Hong Kong on 7th-14th October school holidays and would love any advice/suggestions on what to do during my trip!
Sadly, I can't see anyone post Hong Kong itinerary here. Mostly are Japan :)

I would really appreciate advice on things like to do things in, transport (using public transport, etc) and places for kids and any other things that would be nice to visit. I would definitely go to Disneyland and thinking of staying there for a night or two, is it better staying other hotel, probably saving bit of money.

Thanks guys.

  • It might be for nostalgic reasons, but I quite like Ocean Park.

Walking up to Victoria Peak from Wan Chai through the botanic gardens and free zoo is fun too.

Double decker trams are a must.

  • Do a daytrip to Macau via the ferry. Takes about hour each way. Tickets are fairly cheap.

  • The underground is easy to get around. Sometimes it can be a big (underground) walk from the platform to the exit or another station.
+1 for Macau. Easy to get to and free buses to the casinos. See the Venice canals and Eiffel tower in one day. Studio City has kids entertainment and attractions. Old Macau is nice as well.
In HK, the Hop on Hop off bus has 3 different routes and a night tour. We had a 48 hour ticket from Big Bus. Imo it was worth it.
I was very impressed with the Hong Kong Museum of History. Free and a lot of interactive stuff and beautiful displays. I think kids like it.
Boat trip to Lamma Island. Walk around, eat, watch locals (and tourists) then back again.

Sadly this is ozb, not trip adviser but you can get some tips simply by googling or
    try https://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Attractions-g294217-Activitie…

Personally, 7 days is too long in HK but you can always have a quick trip to China or Macau
Well you can always eat yum cha for breakfast lunch and dinner for 7 days :)

  • Star Ferry and Peak Tram might also be fun for kids.
Maybe some markets. Stanley markets was an easy trip on double decker bus

  • *Honkers

  • Big Buddha on Lantau Island

  • get yourself an octopus card at the airport

  • Buy you tickets to the peak on line/in advance. Nothing beats going to the start of the queue when it's more than an hour wait in 30+ with 99% humidity!

  • try local cuisine.

    • razor/ bamboo clams in with pickled mustard and black bean sauce
    • pineapple bun with butter and a HK style stocking milk tea
    • seafood at lei Yue Mun (鯉魚門, mantis shrimp, clams, geoduck
    • yum cha a traditional tea house
    • fusion cuisine like black pepper steak and spaghetti or baked pork chop rice with cheese
    • clay pot rice with ribs, chinese saucage and mushroom or preserved meats
    • frog congee
    • Chinese deserts like mango and pomelo sago, steamed tofu in ginger syrup,
    • curry fish balls and teamed rice flour rolls from street vendors
    • meal at tai pai dongs (大排檔)with local beer
    • roast goose and char sieu

the list is endless al the different foods that you cant get here

  • Wow, thanks heaps for the suggestion guys, really appreciated.
@myusername I will keep that in mind for octopus card. Thanks.
I found this quite useful information about that card https://www.ausbt.com.au/virgin-australia-codeshares-with-vi…
Do you think taking bus/tram will be cheaper than taxi as I remember taking taxi is heaps cheaper for 4 of us whwn we went to Singapore.

I have added HK Museum of History, Macau and Big Buddha to the list.
I will look at Studio city, Star Ferry and Peak Tram.

Do you think go to Disneyland will be enough for 1day?

To be honest I prefer to post a forum in here rather than those trip adviser as everyone experience are different. :)

    • Keep in mind that this was at least 5 years ago so things might had changed. Disneyland was terrible, over priced as expected and the food, comparatively to the other stuff in proper HK, was also bad. Kids will probably appreciate it but I would recommend Ocean Park over it.

It wasn't that big when I went, and I am pretty sure we covered the whole park in half a day. Another thing to note was that some of the attraction (like the 4D cinema - they were playing Stitch's Great Escape) were in Cantonese only with no English subtitle or anything (which was strange as having grown up in HK, they teach both English and Cantonese).

  • +1

Transport wise the Octopus Card is a must. All modes of public transport use it and it is easy to top up at MTR stations. It can be used at various convenience stores like 7/11 and even McDonalds from memory. The MTR is very packed during peak hours so travel outside of those times where possible. It can get uncomfortable.

If you know where you are staying and want a cheap trip to and from the airport, consider getting prepaid return tickets if the routes match up. See here for more details.

Trams are a must do on Hong Kong Island, even if it is a short trip it is worth it just for the experience. They are also very cheap!

Ocean Park is also great for the rides and attractions. The cable car trip has fantastic views if your family is okay with heights.

If your family likes cats there is a cat cafe in Causeway Bay. The owners look after a fair few cats and have a nice cat-themed menu. The cats are very friendly and I had a great time there. Facebook page

  • Thanks guys, I will look at Ocean Park.

  • Just be prepared the street flooded with people from China as it is their public holiday too.

I would suggest you go to Cheung Chau and Lankau island. Short ferry ride and you can see the old village style of Hong Kong

    • I have checked HK calendar and there is no public holiday :)
China has their golden week holiday which is finish on the 7th though.
