    That is cheap. Thanks OP!

Didn't really need another one, but now I can swap out one of my ambient white ones with a colour one, or keep it as a spare!

    • Yeah No worries mate :)
      Enjoy

    Good find

  • Nice will try to pricematch at officeworks

    • Did officeworks price match?

  • is this better than the other brand?

    • $9.95 more for colour bulb is a no brainer

      • +4

Not if you don't want colour

  • To replace Yeelights or not to replace Yeelights/

Does anyone know a cheap place for Bridge that is less then $89

    • I'm also interested in learning more about this - from the Ozb perspective is it worth paying 2x or 3x as much as a yeelight for these? Googling around i'm really struggling to see why you'd crossover from Yeelight to Hue.

      • +1

        Yes for reliability.

      • +9

I don't own any Hues, but they are supposed to be the most reliable smart light available (mainly due to not using WiFi).

        Reasons for:
        - Reliability
        - Colour accuracy
        - Reputable brand

        Reasons against:
        - Price
        - Need expensive hub
        - Not the brightest, though not bad

LIFX are brighter, Yeelights are cheaper. Both don't need a hub to work.

I personally haven't had any major reliability issues with LIFX or Yeelights. I have owned them for several months and they've been unresponsive maybe once. LIFX has been rock solid for me.

So for me, from an OzBargain perspective, I choose LIFX over Hue, as the price is similar, but LIFX is brighter by a long shot. And I choose Yeelights for decorative lighting, bedside lamps etc, that don't need to be 1000 lumens..

That being said Hue is more power efficient when off, 0.4 W standby vs LIFX at 0.5 W. Almost not worth mentioning though. And then obviously the Hue hub has some power draw which you would need to consider.

        • nice breakdown there. I've got a couple of LIFX and they have been pretty rock solid. Had wondered about the other brands and whether there was any need to consider switching, but LIFX on special ($50) will be my go to I reckon

        • I have the hue light strip and it does rely on wifi.

We occasionally have issues with our wifi dropping out and sometimes you can't turn it on or off.

        • @Big Bad Bagheera: the light strips need wifi not zigbee?

        • @Big Bad Bagheera: Are you using your phone to control the lights? That would require wifi to send traffic to the hub but I believe all hue lights themselves are zigbee.

        • @Smigit: they are all zigbee. Wifi is only to the hub.

        • @Big Bad Bagheera: are you sure it's a hue not a similar

        • LIFX are also quite large in comparison to hue and other bulbs and don't fit every fixture. The hub being "expensive" really depends on your needs. It's wired to your router so is very responsive and if you have 10+ bulbs it will reduce your wifi congestion vs wifi only bulbs. But for small installations it is a considerable cost.

I had a Philips Hue bridge with 3x bulbs for about 1 year, and switched to 6x Xiaomi Yeelight bulbs about 3 months ago.

I switched because it was cheaper to order 6x Yeelights than to order another 3x Philips bulbs.

        Some notes:

        • Colors/brightness: same.
        • Delay from pressing a button on your smartphone to the bulb changing: Almost instant on the Hue vs a noticeable second or two on the Yeelight
        • Yeelight software relies a lot on IFTTT to program. E.g. I could program an alarm in the Philips software, but for the Yeelights you have to do it with IFTTT
        • Yeelight comes with a lot of scenes out of the box (movies, bed time, sunset, romance, etc..). For Philips you have to buy separate apps to get the same functionality.
        • Yeelight comes with a desktop app to build your scenes (I haven't tried it though).
        • Hue bulbs have tonnes of functionality because you can buy apps to do a lot of different things.

        My take:
I like the yeelight because it does what I need (alarm in the morning slowly turns the lights on to simulate sunrise, i can change the lights when watching the tv, and have them on red when i go to bed). If it didn't have the delay when changing settings, it would be perfect.

If you want to do all kinds of fancy things, get the philips bulbs because there are all kinds of third party apps, but they all cost money (a few dollars each), and can be buggy. I didn't use any of those apps after the first month, so they are not for me.

The yeelight range now has LED light strips which you can put behind furniture and stuff which is pretty cool.

TLDR: Once the novelty wears off, just get the Yeelight bulbs because they are cheaper, and can do enough of what the Philips bulbs do. Philips software is easier to use and the bulbs are a little more responsive, but you will be spending a lot of $$ on apps.

Edit: Also, Im on FTTN NBN, and havn't noticed any stability difference. I had to reset the hue bridge a couple times when I had it, havn't had any issues using either app when on wifi.

        • Any guides you can recommend to program the Yeelights? Interested in the alarm thing.

    • I bought a Gen 1 bridge from eBay for $20 a couple years ago. Was sold as new, not convinced it was given packaging etc but does the job.
Difference between Gen 1 and Gen 2 bridges as far as I'm aware is that Gen 2 supports Apple homekit. I don't have any iOS devices so I don't care.

    • Bunnings had it for $75 recently but probably depends on the store

    • I'd say yes. Got rid of my Yeelights because I hated the app

  • good price but does not apply to bayonet version :(

    • You can buy $1 adapters on ebay that convert es to bc. Believe ikea sell them as well.

      • +1

I think IKEA stopped because they are not legal/compliant

  • Does this need the Hue Bridge for Homekit to work? And why no bayonet adapter bulbs.

    • Yes.

    • They do bayonet bulbs, they just don’t appear to be on sale.

    • Amazon Echo Plus, Smartthings i think will work as well with homekit

  • gen 2 bridge also will link with google home and gen 1 doesn't.

  • I have Yeelight, LIFX, Nanoleaf, FLS-PP lp (uses Hue bridge) and Hue, all controlled via Harmony/IFTTT/Yonomi/Alexa.
Of these the only one which has given me issues is LIFX… the bedroom PoS will sometimes just not turn on and the patio one resets the light color every time I mains switch it off.
Hue has been totally flawless, but ef me they're expensive.
My order of preference excluding cost"
    1.- Hue
    2.- Nanoleaf Aurora
    3.- FLS-PP lp
    4.- Yeelight
    5.- LIFX

    Cost considered:
    1.- Nanoleaf Aurora
    2.- Yeelight
    3.- FLS-PP lp
    4.- Yeelight
    5.- LIFX

    • +1

You have YeeLight twice in the second lot. Curious which one you’d have as Hue.

      • +2

        Doh…

        Cost considered:
        1.- Nanoleaf Aurora
        2.- Hue
        3.- FLS-PP lp
        4.- Yeelight
        5.- LIFX

But I should also qualify the above; relevant if buying more than 3 lights, bcos a bridge makes single bulbs noncompetitive and you're better with wifi bulbs.

        https://goo.gl/DKrDBD https://goo.gl/h1Pn3F Nanoleaf, Hue & FLS-PP synched in a scene.

        • Ta. In respect to adding more bulbs to Hue, I’ve found the performance of mine has improved as we’ve added bulbs. We had some distance between the hub and my initial 3 bulbs but as the zigbee lights form a mesh things got more and more reliable as I’ve added lights to my setup. We have about 20 bulbs at this point and it’s now rare that the bridge can’t see a bulb that has power to it.

Just an observation and it possibly is a counter to spanning out on the wifi network where everything else one has is sitting on it so you’re subject to potential congestion.

        • Do you consider the Nanoleaf bright enough with respect to hue bulbs when comparing cost? 9 panels would buy around 4-5 hue at current pricing?

        • +1

@wolfshooter: hub + 9 panels cost me $199 from JB. They illuminate from the wall and are more decorative than illuminating, so I have them usually at just 10%. I would say 9 panels = 3 hue.

        • duplicate

        • Any experience with Osram lightify? I have a bunch connected to Hue. Many work great and are a bargain vs hue full colour versions ($20, less on sale). But about 1 in every 3 or 4 experiences randomly turning on. Not a problem if you use them in combination with a hard switch as I do, but a headache if placed in bedrooms…

  • Woo, first Amazon AU order.

    • Hope you applied the $20 discount (that I can't use)…

      • $20 discount won't work .. minimum order needs to be $79..
Code will work if you buy 2 of these :)

        • Or a bunch of other things…

        • Bought 2 using the Amazon20 code with new account

  • -1

At moment cheaper to buy pack and Hub for $250 if you don't have hub already

    • Not sure how that works? The pack is 3 bulbs + hub. Buying 3 of these + Hub = $150 + $89. Unless you're referring to the BC version pack?

      • Yea keen to understand asa79’s rationale. Maybe asa79 didn’t do enough research. Heh!

    • Slightly cheaper if buying the pack with hub and free echo spot at $256 if you need that combination…

  • +1

Gen 4 bulbs supposed to be out this year so wonder if that's why the price drop?

    • Good point but as the Gen3 bulbs have only recently become officially available in Australia there would probably be a long wait for the Gen4 to arrive if in fact they are in the pipeline.
Ordered 4 bulbs and got the $20 discount so pretty happy with that and free postage.

    • The 3 lights + hub kit I purchased through amazon uk were gen 4. Bunnings BC are gen 3. From my readings there isn't much between them except perhaps a bit more saturation in the purple. Do you know of any other differences?

  • Does anyone know if Officeworks price beat Amazon Australia?

    • Depends on the store, some will but I've read some have refused for the same reason they won't match eBay

    • isnt harvey norman matching Amazon?

  • Very happy, bought another three. Sick of the issues from having bought USA ones so these will go in the more commonly used places.

Don’t forget to use code AMAZON20 if it’s your first amazon au purchase, and select free shipping.

    • What issues were you having mate? I have two off these I bought from the States and they turn themselves bac on to full brightness after I've scheduled them to turn off. Actually whenever I turn them off via the app they turn back on.

      • Hi Pandorumdude, same issue as you! Funny enough only with the colour ones I bought from the states. The white ones from the same USA shop have no issues being turned off via phone/ifttt.

  • Selectable colour temperature? Oh my. Can you actually just enter in your desired white point, i.e 4000k? If so this is the revolution I've been waiting for, because every normal bulb on the market is either so yellow it looks jaundiced, or so blue I feel like I'm on a bus after dark.

    • I don’t think you can set the number in the first party app, but there’s probably a third party app that would allow this.

  • Got Officeworks to price beat two globes so I didn't have to wait for Amazon to deliver and because other retailers complain about Amazon being too much competition.

At first the person refused saying they don't price match Amazon Australia but she could not provide an explanation. I insisted on getting a manager and they both looked up Amazon.com.au to check whether it was Australian stock and whether it included delivery etc. It was a 10-15 minute process but eventually they beat it so I was happy but I wish both Officeworks and its staff were more consistent.

I almost feared because I was getting the bulbs for $49.95 each rather than Officeworks' everyday low price of $89.00 that they'd close the whole store for "the holidays".

  • OK, I know this is a repeat of other questions, but if I have an amazon echo do I need this bridge? I mean does it work with the echo but 'not the full experience" or does it definitely need the bridge to actually work?

I don't know why I am having so much trouble getting it thru my head!!!

    • +1

It says they work with the Echo Plus without a bridge but not the other Echoes.

  • Awesome, ordered 2! Thanks OP

  • Many thanks OP. Great price. Ordered 3 to expand the existing setup. As mentioned by jasonbw, used code AMAZON20 to bring the price down $129.9 for the 3.

  • Price matched at Bunnings 😃

  • Cheers OP, grabbed 1!

  • For anyone like me that needs the bayonet version, I tried to get them to price match at Bunnings and they were already in the system for $48.

    • So the bayonet White and Colour Ambiance are $48?

  • Is this the new everyday price?

  • OP, is this expired? Price showing as $81

    • Yes looks like offer price gone. Just updated expiry
