Default Listed to My Name but My First Name Was Misspelled?

Hi all,

I need your opinion in regards to a default listing.

Long story short, I had to open a new gas and electricity account a few months back on my investment property (the tenant left and did damage). Later on I received email about the outstanding amount and I paid it. I though that amount covered both the electricity and gas, turns out it is not (my bad). I only found out recently when I looked at my old email address (that I used to sign up to origin) and Origin has default listed me. I have since paid it, it was only for $250

BUT, they actually misspelled my first name by one letter. Does that mean the default listing won't go to my credit file? That origin account is also under my residential property address, not my actual residential address that I've been using.

Thanks all.

  • Check with a credit bureau

  • Get a copy of your credit file but they don't go just by name, they also go by date of birth

  • simply go to "my credit file" https://www.mycreditfile.com.au/ to order a free report. You get to apply for 1 free credit file per year, but they say you need to wait 10 days (that's how they make you pay for the report if you need it as a matter of urgency). It normally doesnt take 10 days but the actual time varies …

  • Probably better to go direct to credit reporting companies:

    https://www.oaic.gov.au/individuals/faqs-for-individuals/cre…

  • its quite possible them listing the default with a different name will create a second credit file. the credit reporting agency can handle this in 3 ways, they may realise you're the same person and just merge the files together. they may believe you are still the same person but give our your details differently to some places and link the two files together, or they may not link them at all.

Keep in mind in scenario 3, places you apply for credit will likely see this second credit file and the default, when you apply for credit, but you won't get the details when you request a copy of your credit file.
