August Smart Lock for Apartment

Hi Guys,

Just wondering if any of you have installed August Smart Lock in your Strata Apartment?

I have deadbolt in my apartment and just wondering if I can install August in the inside side of the lock, essentially maintaining the fire safety requirement for the deadlock.

I have done some research and it looks like it's not permitted in Strata complex because of Fire Safety requirement but then someone has mentioned that I can install August lock because that doesn't replace the existing lock completely.

Any thought, experience that you could share would be great.

Check and see if your deadbolt is compatible and then in an inspection it takes 30 seconds to screw it off and put the original indoor unit back on.

Beware if your deadbolt hole is too close to the door frame, the chunky side of the August might not fit against your door. On mine if you have fat fingers they will graze the door frame if you hold it at that point and turn. I cut the hole at 6cm from the edge of the door and I think most deadbolts are 5 or 6cm

    • Thanks Cox,

Would claiming insurance be a problem in case of fire?

      • Good question… that’s why I put mine on the garage door entry so if it fails there’s still the roller door keeping people out

Edit: hang on, in a fire wouldn’t it be better since you don’t need to find a key to leave the building?

Yeah fair point, but I believe Apartments aren't allowed to have deadlocks which can be locked from inside with the key. The one we have doesn't have a key in the knob, so in case of fire you could twist the knob and run for your life.

I used an igloo smart deadlock. hooked it up airbnb.

    So simple and works well.
