Saw all those cheap 1050 cards the other night.
Was reading up on other sites to see what would be best for my needs, and came across a Q&A that mentioned the need for an active converter to run VGA from these cards, as the 1050 doesn't have any support for analogue output.
All those cheap 1050 cards have a VGA port on them!!
Dodgy as …
I wonder what they really are, and how many people will ever know they've been had.
These are the questions and things that keep me up late at night.. and sometimes up still during the day haha lol oh boy man I made myself sad again today :'(
Go for an R9 290/290x like this one and you'll be able to haggle it down to your $150 budget. Assuming your power supply can handle it, otherwise you're going to fork out the same or slightly more cash for substantially lesser performance with a GTX 1050/1050ti.
Just a heads up while yes this is cheap and performance wise sits close to a 1060 6gb but a bit lesser this card (R9 290X) has a crazy power consumption, like 300 watts consumption power hour under full load.
It can spike even higher to 350 watts for a few milliseconds which depending on your psu can brick it.
A 1060 6gb uses about 120 watts under load and peaks at around 144 watts in max tests.
A 1080 uses about 180 watts under load for comparisons sake.
So yeah depending on your use case scenario this could use an extra 100-150 watts going with the older R9 290X over a GTX 1050 Ti or GTX 1060 3gb or 6gb solution.
That can be anywhere from a few extra cents on your electric bill a month to a handful of dollars per year.
Imho get a current gen or last few gen Nvidia instead just better support also all round unless you want to support and help the red team.. because by God they need it.
Not worth the few dollars in savings. My two cents.
What about a gtx 960 2gb? Found an ad on Facebook market for $65 for it. Thoughts?
If it's listed for $65 then it's great value. It's quite a bit cheaper than the going rate for GTX 960s though, so see if you can test it before picking up to make sure it's in working order.
if looking for a new card - while not earth shattering - im a fan of the RX550.
$130 will do 1080 @ med/high @ 60 in most games..
Yes I've had a look at the RX550. Definitely one of my options.
What case is it? If it is a small form factor the highest you can go is a 1050ti low profile. Otherwise 1050 ti on gumtree haggle it down to the lowest price possible is your best bet.
Don't buy the eBay stuff from China. As far as I know they are fake or heavily mined or something suspicious. The price is alluring but yeah it's not legitimate.
