Aldi Medion Akoya i3-370m/4GB/640GB HDD/USB3.0/Nvidia 425m 1GB Model P6624 Laptop for $599

280

Hi guys,

I'm not sure what you reckon, but I thought this was a decent laptop for the new price. I saw it in Aldi Wallsend (NSW) but it had one of the proper red printed price tags, so it should be this price in all stores hopefully. It was originally posted here http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/33087 & was understandably poo-poo'd @ $899, but shaving $300 off kinda makes it much more appealing! Given the significant price reduction and the fact that commenting on the old is closed, I don't reckon this qualifies as a dupe!

I'm not sure how many stores still have stock, but I think it's an ok deal for those near an Aldi that does! ;)

    Ooops :P

  • i saw these at my local store in ballarat for this price

    • which one and how long ago?

      • sebastopol, last weekend

        • -1

Hmm, if I'd known so few stores were doing the same deal I'd have taken a crappy phone photo of the display with the prices & uploaded it…damn! Never thought it would be an issue, coz I reckon it's about the right price for this kind of model ATM given the release of Sandy Vag…erm I mean Bridge! :p

I might swing by when I grab some groceries on my way home from work tomorrow & see if I can grab one then…no promises though! ;)

  • good value for an all around laptop + TV tuner :)

    • +1

Not really , isnt this just an usb tv tuner in addition to a high specced low quality machine.

Seems like a top of the line hyundai to me

      • Apcmag reviews & reports on WP were fairly positive.

Jeez dude, if all you can afford is 'a top of the line hyundai', then that's what you've gotta buy…no room for brand snobs with champagne tastes on a beer budget Mik! :p

      • +3

I wouldn't call recent model Hyundais low quality at all.

  • How reliable is Medion? What's their warranty/support like?

    • +4

Medion is just the shell really. The components inside are still Intel, Western Digital, etc. I dunno what their warranty is like but I believe it's 2 years.

      • +1

Slapped together by some company, hardly designed for things like airflow etc

        • Yeah, just like most other mass produced laptops where everyone wants every gadget shoehorned into their new 'Tardis'! :p

A lotta big brand names out there with piss-poor airflow too Mik! ;)

    • +3

I have family members with Medion desktops and notebooks, all have quality parts inside and have performed without problems, the oldest would be several years old now.

The notebooks also have a 8 cell battery standard giving them excellent battery life between recharges.

The Medion brand is used internationally http://www.medion.com/english/

      • I had this machine and returned it for a refund. Battery life was very average—wouldn't call it excellent at all.

The build quality was average as well—see my notes below. I can't comment on other Medions that Aldi have sold in the past.

        • Most laptops with relatively decent discrete graphics have fairly ordinary battery life IME, that's why they make them switchable…now if it still happens with the integrated too, you've got yourself an issue! ;)

        • +1

I only got a couple hours of battery life with basic tasks like web browsing, etc using the integrated graphics. Some reviews say they achieved around 3 hrs on integrated, which would be considered good battery life.

Overall though, a very good desktop replacement laptop for $599 (but for me I would have to use a USB/wireless mouse and probably also external keyboard for prolonged use—see my other comments).

        • Agreed, TBH I actually can't find a modern laptop I like the keyboard on…and I really hate trackpads!!!

          I always use a big-boy's kb/mouse too when I'm doing any busy work! ;)

        • @ camelgrass.. u meant to say it had switchable graphics card??

edit: oh nevermind it has nVidia Optimus

i think if u get 3hrs on integrated, that's not too bad

i get around anywhere between 4-6 on my Acer TimeLineX 5820TG when running on the intel integrated gfx

I bought a GPS from Aldi & the quality is far below Tom tom or Navman. Obviously the Aldi one is cheaper so expect to get what you pay for. I will go shopping groceries with Aldi but not electronic stuff.

    • Needed a washing machine quick and bought a front loader from Aldi for ~$500 and it was pretty awesome. When I received my $2000 LG one, I got rid of the Aldi and really regretted it because it wasn't as good..

Also my Medion 500gb hard drive still going strong despite my having dropped it a couple of times.

That said, the iPhone fm transmitter they sold recently, I returned 10 minutes after purchase because it worked a grand total of 5minutes.

      • woot, $2000 for a washine machine???

i bought an electrolux 7kg high efficiency fronter loader 4 years ago, still working ok, but it doesn't rinse very well. so i went back to using an old f&p 7kg gw709 top loader which rinses really well. i get free spare parts every year during kerbside throwouts :)

  • much more attractive price @ $599

  • Awesome price.

If I didn't buy the HP DV6-3131TX 2 days ago I would be all over this one. But by saying that, I still prefer the DV6 over the Medion.

Just took a glance at some pictures and reviews. Wow! the design (outer shell) looks very good however it's way to bulky and heavy (2.9KG) for my liking.

  • And USB 3.0 too!

    • have you tried looking at the one at Narre Warren South

    • So you thought this was a good bargain but because the store wouldn't do that price you negged it?

Seems you once thought it was a bargain.

  • +1

Leichhardt store has a red price tag of $699. There seems to be a lot of variation between stores on this item. For this price the HP with the i5 for $759 is better value.

  • +1

USB3, TV Tuner, dedicated graphics and 8 cell battery are a plus than normal i3 laptops.
    Great price, I should say.

I bought one of these laptops before Xmas, most likely this model or very similar.

The display is bright, sharp and vibrant. Laptop performance is good. General build quality is average, maybe a little below average. Battery life is disappointing.

Others may differ but I personally don't like the feel of the keyboard. I also don't like the trackpad, but may improve if you turn off the multi-touch feature.

The worst thing about this laptop are the mouse buttons. They are very low quality, non-ergonomic and difficult to use insofar that you have to press very firmly with significant effort to use them.

I returned the laptop for a refund. I couldn't put up with the keyboard and mouse buttons. If you intend on using a USB/wireless mouse then it would be far more usable.

  • are you sure it was the same model that you got? maybe this is a newer version

    • Just had a look again at the specs and images—exactly the same as what I bought before Xmas.

  • What about this one:

    http://store.9289.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&cP…

$100 more, but it's an HP, which are pretty nice looking and built well. Surely nicer than Medion. Has a better processor, and a 7200rpm HD.

Budget lappy still has it's merits. Good deal.

    • +2

HP brand is NOT a bonus! Other than that this looks like a good deal if you can get it at that price (preorder = no stock)

      • +2

true that , HP and Medion are probably on par

        • Dunno, I've had no direct experience with the Medion (only read positive reviews) & almost all bad direct exp with HP laptops that have known flaws that HP Aust won't fix, so I wouldn't be confident to make a call like that! :p

How much direct exp do you have with the Medion lappy's Mik? ;)

        • +1

A lot stewballs, mostly complaints, although not as many as HP

  • +1

I don't need it but it certainly makes a compelling proposition at $599 for a bit of mobile gaming/general computing tasks. I wonder how the GPU will do handling 3D games?
Might need to start calling around my local branches to see if they have it.

    • least you have a few days to take it back if you dont like it , personally i would steer clear if you dont need it.

      • +1

The gaming performance of the GT 425M is sufficient for medium detail settings in modern games like Battlefield Bad Company 2. Less demanding games should run in high detail settings. The best resolution to choose is about 1360x768 due to the limited performance. Benchmarks and comparison charts on the 3D performance can be found below.

        • yes but how will it play with the card in the actual notebook? would be interested in that

  • The only possible bottleneck is the CPU. Everything else seems good to run latest games and DX11. Provided don't expect stellar performance, but it is good for what it is and price point is excellent. My friend is after a new laptop so he is going to hunt this one down today.

In the worst scenario you could always get a refund as per Aldi's 60 day policy. Good luck.

  • Good Deal. Unfortunately no stock at Salisbury Aldi in Brisbane

  • Has anyone bought this for $599? and have a receipt to prove it!
Two Aldi stores I checked have it for $749.
Could this be a price tag error?

    • Same at my local Aldi store.

      • yep, maybe StewBall got signs mixed up as they had 2 laptops and 1 desktop on display
until someone posts a receipt this is not a Bargain

        • Nope, nothing mixed up at all. You might want to read the comments above from someone else who has seen it mate.

As I said, Aldi Wallsend NSW had this model (& FWIW also the 17" i3/3gb/500gb/USB2.0 model) for $599 each. I never guaranteed your local would have it marked similarly, I just hoped that was the case…deal with it! ;)

So, did anybody think to get their local manager to call Wallsend…or did you just give up??? :p

  • $749 at Aldi Ballina…

  • StewBalls - you know what the best way to appease everyone is. Either take a photograph of the display price or purchase it and scan the receipt for us and then subsequently return it(if you don't intend to buy it for keeps).
This would give us all the proof we need to demand price transparency from them.
Ofcourse, I'm not urging you to do this or forcing you to part with your precious time… :)

    • +1

Got some, thank my employer for sending me over that way & I had lunch in Wallsend! ;)

Here we go, for ye of little faith: http://img268.imageshack.us/i/19012011.jpg/ and http://img121.imageshack.us/i/19012011002.jpg/ and before anyone brings it up, yes I know the tag says Intel graphics, but you'll see the model & note Nvidia on the box shot!

      Here's the 17" for any interested: http://img525.imageshack.us/i/19012011004.jpg/

Apologies for the crap photos, piss-poor photographer, camera & conditions! Any time I got far enough away to see the whole thing all I got was reflection off the glass case! I did have one with a great reflection of my lunch kebab though! :p

I can't really upload a receipt coz I didn't buy one…and there's no way in the world I'm buying one & returining it just to prove a point to anyone!!! I would, but I don't need a laptop, my employer kindly provides me one & the only one I've ever purchased still works great & just won't die! ;)

  • $699 down from $899 at Leichhardt.

  • actually mate I went to the same store as step_hen who supposedly saw it for your price but surprise - it was $749! An amazing markup of $150 bucks in 1 day!
so far no one has bought this for $599 - not even you

    • All right, let me be very clear about this…go into Wallsend NSW store or have your local manager call them, I was there half an hour ago, I took photos (see above), they have some stock at this price!!!

      • It's StewBall FTW!!!

      • About 6 weeks ago I asked the rude staff at ALDI Sunnybank to please call another store for stock levels—she said too busy come back in an hour or so and maybe I can help you.

        • did they get flooded?

        • no, i doubt sunnybank got flooded
they are quite far away from the Brisbane CBD, however quite close to 8 mile plains

        • Sunnybank was not flooded.

But Umart and GoComp Milton were flooded to the ceiling. Pretty sure both companies lost most of their stock.

I live about 100m from their location and there would have been very little time to get stock out.

        • awesome pics

        • Also my favourite Officeworks price-matching store at Milton was flooded and is out of action.

        • Added an image of Umart and Gocomp from the air completely surrounded by flood water. You can also see people boating and canoeing where the street once was.

should loot through the carnage and RMA those water damaged harddrives ><

  • My local Aldi ( Point Clare, NSW ) has both the laptop and desktop reduced to $599.00 each.

    • Maybe NSW pricing only
I'll drop in tonight, and see if they have updated pricing - and I will ask the manager.

  • Lol, was just shopping in Cardiff (NSW) where they also appear to have stock…a dude was taking photos of the stand too…I more than half expected to log in here & see some new photos! ;)
