Which used medium sedan under $20k?

Asking on behalf of a mate. Which used medium sedan should he buy?

  • Budget is $20,000.
  • No more than 5 years old.
  • Automatic transmission.
  • Fuel economy and running costs are more important than performance.

His parents have a hybrid Camry that they love and he was originally thinking of getting one too. But the ones that I see advertised in that price range are all over 100,000km.

2013 Mazda 6 diesels are available for about $20k. And Hyundai i40 diesels less than that. What do you think of these cars? Are there any other cars he should be considering?

Yeah nah, an uninsured Audi is a better choice.

I think he should just commandeer the Camry, it's the highest yielding choice.

  • What's his age?

    • He’s 31 years old. Why do you ask?

Helps with recommending a car. Camry's are boring and probably not what a 31 year old male wants to drive.

        Maybe a toyota 86 https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/Toyota-86-2014/SSE-…

        • Medium sedan requested…

        • Yeah I agree camry’s are boring. Nothing screams “my car is basically a transportation appliance” like Toyota Camry.

Thanks for the suggestion, but an 86 won’t suit him. He specifically wants a sedan.

        • @chuee That car needs ULP98 and has below average fuel economy = not cheap.

  • The cars you seem to mention (Camry, Mazda 6, i40) seems to be more towards the larger sized sedans. Are cars such as the Mazda 3, Civic, Corolla, i30 too small for his liking?

    I just bought a Mazda3 Sp25 GT.
You should be able to get a 2014 with around 50,000 kms for around 20k.
I really like mine. While its on the smaller side of a medium sedan, its still big enough for four people.

  • Mine is a large, not a medium, and 4 strong footmen manage quite well but additional handles will accept 8 just in case some village mopsy joins me within en route to Castle PJC.

  • CAmry mang

  • Camry Hybrid is the obvious choice. 50 series first introduced early 2012, so tell your mate to extend his criteria to 6 years. Also take a look at a Lexus GS450h, although for his budget will have to be a bit older.

Look a little harder. Also be careful of dumbos that choose the wrong model for the ad, example here, is a petrol Altise listed as a hybrid. Same goes for boofhead dealers who list a hybrid as a petrol, like here for example.

For 2012-2015 hybrids, there was the h and hL. h has similar specs to Atara S, hL has similar specs to Atara SL. Facelift in 2015 saw hybrids adapted as powertrain options for Altise, Atara S and Atara SL. Decent under 100K hybrid hL here.

  • Non hybrid Camry

  • VW Passat B8
