Sony CyberShot DSC-RX100 IV + Headphones $872 + $9.95 Delivery at Camera Warehouse eBay (Plus Bonus $100 EFTPOS Card from Sony)

620
PAMPER20

A pretty good price for a (still) great compact camera. The mark IV is not the latest one but has all the important tangible features (960FPS slow mo, 4k video, EVF). The newer mark V has improved AF. A comparison of all RX100 models can be found here - unfortunately there is not much real news about a mark VI. At $772 after cashback +$10 for delivery it is about $70 cheaper than grey imports and is a very good deal if you are in the market for the a camera from the best premium compact line.

Alternatively, if you dislike Sony, the Panasonic LX10 (which is almost comparable to the RX100, but minus EVF) can be had for $650 delivered. A comparison of the LX10 and RX100 IV features can be found here. The TL;DR is that the LX10 has the 4K photo mode which is pretty good, and a faster lens open, but the RX100 has the all important EVF, a 960FPS slow motion mode and faster burst shooting (but not as fast as 4K photo bursts)

Thanks to cjmorgan87 for pointing out that camera warehouse had it at the same price and includes a pair of headphones!

  • Is click and collect free? or $22 delivery as well

    • Oh, good point, I didn't see C&C had a cost. Sorry :(

  • +11

I posted the rx100 V for $1030 australian stock nov last year - no one was interested :) https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/344532

The V now is $1050, which is still good, from videopro and $100 back.

I'd love the LX10, but really shooting without evf outdoors is ridiculous - I can't see a thing if it's sunny.

    • +1

I checked Video pro and do not see it for that price do you have a link please?

    • Mark VI is officially out as of a few minutes ago as I just got the email ;) Available late June with preorders from today. SRP $1,699

      https://www.sony.com.au/electronics/cyber-shot-compact-camer…

The RX100 VI introduces broad zoom range with beautiful image quality to a high-performance pocket-size camera. With 24-200mm1 zoom, 1.0-type CMOS sensor, phase-detection AF, ultra-fast 0.03-sec.5 AF, tenacious AF/AE tracking, 24fps6 continuous shots and 4K HDR (HLG)-compatible movies8 9, it's ready to tackle any situation.

      • Gee, I almost thought it wasn't going to happen. Now, if panasonic and ricoh will update theirs :)

      • Can't have everything - I'd prefer less zoom and brighter lens, like the LX10.

      • Dpreview has an article on it already

      • I don't like it - I think they went backwards, like canon did with the g1x III. The lens should be faster, not slower. I'm still waiting.

  • So tempted

  • Any other decent camera deals that people can recommend? Looking for a video focused camera to use while travelling.

    • +5

      Well, the rx100 v

    • +9

Depends on your budget. If your needs are video focused then it's pretty much Sony or Panasonic. I am only going to talk about compacts. ILCs are an entirely different kettle of fish.

At the high end, the RX100 is the best, great image quality and video and features with a premium price tag. The Panasonic LX10 is also a solid contender, as is the LX100 (but it is WAY overdue for a refresh). The drawback of all these are the relatively short zoom range (most around 24-72, or 3x) but all have a good sensor size (1" for RX100 and LX10, 4/3 for LX100), proven lens quality and great video (you can google sample footages, they are all good). If you need the long zoom, then the TZ100 or TZ200 can be considered - they have similar features to the LX10 but have a longer zoom (10x) trading off with a slower lens (so worse in low light and unable to reach fast shutter speeds if you need).

A lower priced option is the TZ90, which has an electronic view finder (EVF), a long zoom (30x) and 4k video capabilities and touchscreen but a smaller sensor and slower lens (so not as good in low light).

If you need a "tough" camera then the Olympus TG-5 is the best option.

      • Footage is also the plural for footage

  • Great deal. Still waiting for an updated RX100. Want to see a touch screen and the removal of the 5 minute limit on 4K recording.

    • I've been waiting for an interesting camera. They haven't happened for ages. An upgrade for the LX100 or the GRII (if it had evf and image stabilisation) or the RX100 V

    • you can hack the rx100 iv and remove the 5 minute limit. hack doesnt work on the V tho

      • +1

nahh, don't want to risk bushfiring the components.

    • See above :) Pre-order today for late June.

      • Sony have gone backwards
        - Slower Lens f2.8-4.5 from f1.8-2.8
        - Still 5 minutes 4k recording limit
        - Have not readded mic support
        - More expensive
        - Low light photography shots will be interesting to see

Oh nice. That's definitely a better deal.

I really hate how they got rid of the search field for these 20% off deals.

      Have updated post with thanks!

  • hmmm my m3 is trash AF in darkish scenes. So no improvements in mark 4?

Might have to wait for Mark 5 for a deal.

    • yes, the phase detect that the V has should be better

  • +1

camera house had the rx100 v for $1299 but they removed it before the sale started

  • Any comments on the quality of the headphones?

  • I've had this camera for a few years - I was pretty excited when I bought it and have been mildly disappointed using it.

    1. Battery life is terrible so buy a spare battery or carry a power bank (it can be charged directly via USB cable which is a +)
    2. Image stabilisation on video (especially 4k) is non existent, so the videos must be taken from a tripod of fixed surface or they are just unusable / juddery. I upgraded my previous camera which I think was an A600 as I wanted something smaller and 4k, well I got both, but sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for as the 4k is unusable and the battery is a killer.

All up this camera has converted me to using an iPhone for all holiday photos (which is what I bought the camera for). This may speak volumes about my ability level, but for the amount of hassle involved with carting around a separate camera, keeping it charged, waiting for it to boot up etc just to take a happy snap which you have about 2 seconds to prepare for when on the move - in my view its just not worth it.

    • +1

Obviously you're not alone - high end compact digital development has come to a standstill it seems; no new models

    • Nonsense. This camera has great video stabilisation.

Watch this review from The DPreview guys around the 7 minute mark, they say and show it's like a Steadicam.

      https://youtu.be/tjVwF9qwaos

I've owned this camera and can attest to this.

It also shoots great 1080p at 120fps because of this great stabilisation.

If you're not after 4k then go for the MK3. It has the same stabilisation.

  • Serious question; is not 1" sensor size too small to produce a better quality photo in terms of details (let alone low light capabilities). I just don't understand why a person would spend $1,000 for this when Sony a7 full frame camera with kit lens is available for bit more. I understand there are few bells and whistles (basically gimmicky stuff such as slow motion, faster AF etc) but ridiculously small sensor size doesn't seem to discourage consumers. Any explanation that I'm missing here? Is the image quality even comparable with A7 range in terms of details?

    • +4

Because this weighs 300 grams and fits on my belt pouch without pulling my pants down. :)

Your image quality in good light will be comparable (obviously you don't have the same DoF). You are absolutely right about low light; low light performance however is relative. "Full Frame" aka small format is going to be better than a 1" (which is not actually 1" - damn these marketers) but is going to be worse than your medium format. This was in fact the topic of a recent opinion piece on DPReview.

      • I do not get your argument. In good light a smartphone camera produces good pictures (albeit DoF). The main reason to take bigger sensor is to have a chance to take shots with deficit of light.

What do you mean saying " is going to be worse than your medium format"?.. DO you mean whether the camera / software are current?

        • +2

Medium format is a sensor size. As the name implies, it is one step up from 35mm (aka full frame aka small format) which is found in dslr. If all you care about is the largest sensor size then you should not be stopping at dslr.

I am a fan of smart phone photography as well (the P20 pro does some software black magic but I dislike their limitations for video (low bitrate). Smart phones also lack optical zoom (which the P20 pro kinda does via software. They have two primes at 1x and 3x and make up everything in between) and I like to compose when I shoot because I am too lazy to post process :p

If you shoot a lot of low light by all means use the a72s or a73. That's the right tool for the job. It is not the right tool for the job when you need something pocketable, or for some street photography.

Just choose what's right for you.

As a side note, there are those who have embraced the smart phone format - Steven Sodeberg shot a movie using an iPhone and a Gimbal - and you can see the artefacts and such but it doesn't get in the way of his vision, and the same for photogs - the camera is just a tool!

        • @Fiximol:

          A7s2 (not A72s).

        • @Fiximol: I agree with you. It just Sony 6000 series offers similar form factor to the subj but with way bigger sensor. So the case for RX100 gets very marginal…

    • +3

I use the MK3 for my travel pictures and it rocks, the image quality is amazing and blows my Nikon DSLR out of the water. It's light, compact and if you know what your doing it can create excellent images. Even left full auto it gets the job done very well.

      • Something is not right if it blows your Nikon DSLR out of the water :/

      • MK III is $669 (after $50 eftpos card) + postage at Camera Warehouse and includes a set of headphone and a Samsonite suitcase.

    • +1

NPNP: Size, cost, weight. You still have to buy lens or lenses. And no, the image quality won't be comparable to full frame re dynamic range and shallow depth of field (with the right expensive lens) at the least.

  • Nice detailed post Fiximol. Thank you, it's appreciated.

  • The RX100 VI has been announced. I feel that the lens is a downgrade though. I don't care about the extra zoom. Each to their own though.
