Cool thanks. $169.99 for anyone interested.
For only $10 more you can get the wd which will most likely have hgst helium he10 (wd80ezaz, us7sal080) drives in them.
Wont these have american power supplies ?
Yes, so you need to allow for replacing the external power supply. A lot of the people interested in importing these actually do it to break open the case and extract the hard drive itself. Personally I wouldn't bother - you can save a few dollars but you end up without a warranty, and it can be a bit of a gamble as to what type of drive is in the case. I'd do it if I already had the external drive and it wasn't being used and I wanted to put it into a desktop, but I wouldn't buy one specifically to extract the drive…..
Put the drive back in the case and send them off for warranty. Locally 8tb wd reds are about $350, these are about $240ish depending on how many you buy. That's enough of a saving for me. I currently have 8x shucked 8tb HDDs in my unRAID array. That's a saving of over $800.
Hi all, please excuse my ignorance.. Reading your remark, does it mean WD Red (or Helium HE10 as someone commented above) is used in this housing? If it is, can I simply take it out and plug it in a NAS?
It would be great if it's Red or HE10as I was looking at either to upgrade the drives in my NAS.
Thankyou
@DonIsGood: I got 8 wd80ezaz when I shucked mine. These appear to be hgst he10 drives but spinning at 5400 RPM and with tler turned off. Tler can be turned on by it won't survive a cold reboot. Depending on your Nas you should be able to add the tler to a startup script. I have mine in my unRAID box so don't need or want tler.
can these drives nowadays still be opened up and drive extracted for use in a desktop? or is it cheaper to buy as bare drive?
That's what I'd like to know. It's annoying that buying these works out cheaper than just buying the drives because you end up with a load of electronics that I don't need.
Yes, both ST and WD 8T can be extracted. I would recommend go for WD 8TB My Book Desktop External Hard Drive - USB 3.0 - WDBBGB0080HBK-NESN.
You need modify the chip(or just disable it) if wan reuse the case for non WD disk.
Thanks for sharing. Can anyone suggest a cheap 8TB drive?
