Doesn't the console come with one already?

  • +3

Is the right hand side the one you need to mod?

    • +5

      Yes

    • What do you mean by need to mod?

Edit: Oh by mod, you mean modding the Switch with hacks/homebrew? (As opposed to modding the joycons themselves)

      • The original right joycon had reception issues. To fix it you had to buy some non-conductive foam for $1 and put it over the internal antenna.

The mod was so effective Nintendo copied it for repairs and the second gen Joycons. The third generation now point the antenna downwards.

That is probably why these right Joycons are so cheap.

        • I was talking more for hacks/homebrew (you can permanently mod the right joycon to use as a "jig" so people are buying a spare one.

I assume that's what coxymla meant but I could be wrong.

        • @stratbargain: But a RCM jig is only $8 and likely to be cheaper once the Chinese start mass producing them. Why would you risk damaging a $36 joycon to turn it into a jig?
A REAL ozbargainer uses a paperclip. I would buy the jig though, far safer.

@serrin: Alternately, if you have a 3D printer, you can also print one yourself.

        • @serrin:

          Because you can?

I get that a jig is cheap, heck I was using a babypin for the most part. But some people like to mod it into the controller itself.

        • @RichardL: you can certainly print your own rcm jig. You'll need to put in a peice of metal in yourself which, depending on the thickness can throw off the end result.
Like all 3D printing once you have the prototyping down pat on your own setup future prints are very reproducible. Getting to that stage is the hard part.

@stratbargain: there will always be people who things for "sh*ts and giggles" but I suspect the majority of people modding their switch would not want to go buy a $36 controller to mod for this purpose (and in the process of modding it, risk breaking it). At least, going by the posts on gbatemp anyway.
If you were going to mod a joycon, wouldn't you do it to the one that came with the switch anyway? What's the purpose of having two right joycons, one modded, one unmodded?

  • +1

EB have them both for $36 - Earn dem Carrots!
    Left Joy Con - $36
    Right Joy Con - $36

    • Unfortunately most store are out of stock and they don't deliver.

I asked at my local EB Games, and it marked as discontinued on their system.

      • Maybe price match it? Since it’s in stock at other places.

        • Where would you price match? The only other store that stocks the single Joy-Con is JB Hi-Fi and the stock level there is just as low.

  • Dammit, i need a left! :(

      Buy three rights?

  • it's like losing a left arm

To me, it seems pretty disgusting the cost of these next to a PS4 or Xbox controller. $126 (for left + right) seems really excessive…

    • +1

Switch "Pro" controller is so overpriced as well.

      • At least at $80 full RRP, it's not that far removed from RRP for Xbox or PS4.

    • +1

Yeah, but that's not really apples to apples. Really you're getting 1.5-2 controllers for that price. (There's more transmitters and sensors and buttons, etc, than a single controller. Plus the flexibility of using in multiple form functions and as 1 or 2 controllers.)

If you think of it like this, at 1.5, it's the equivalent of $84 per 1 normal controller (they are still expensive, but not disgustingly so!).

Or think of it like this:
-2 joycons are cheaper than 2 PS4/XBox controllers (for 2 player)
-2 joycons are more expensive than 1 PS4/XBOX controller (for 1 player)

It is entirely appropriate that they cost more than 1 controller, but cost less than 2 controllers. They are priced on the high side, sure, but in the right ballpark.

IMO you just end up getting two crappy controllers that are uncomfortable to use for anything more than a quick session. There's no way I would justify them as two controllers, and I bought another pair of joy cons at full price.

  • If you want it quicker. EB games has this for $36 both left and right and jb hifi price match and store transfer when needed
