First Post. Sorry if I mess things up. Please let me know what I can improve :)

Both the 2200G and the ASRock AB350M-Pro4 are recommended in this PC Parts guide for when building a PC. Decent prices on great products; albeit not the best prices they have ever seen. If I had the money to be upgrading my PC, these are the two parts I would be buying…

PLEASE NOTE: Both of these motherboards might require a BIOS update in order to work with this CPU. Here is an short-ish article AMD have written about how to overcome this problem. If you don't have a chip yourself that you can use to flash the BIOS, it might be worth asking the seller to send you one that has already been flashed to work with the 2nd gen of Ryzen CPU's.

  • Decent price on the 2200G but I'd HIGHLY recommend people avoid that Asrock motherboard. I had that particularly model and it's renowned for having issues with freezing (there are 27 pages on the Asrock forums about it - it's very common).

I've got this MOBO with a 1600 Ryzen… been good last 12 months (but guess I wished I knew these issues earlier)

Did not know about the board issues. Thanks for posting. Did some quick research myself…
This reddit post someone named kggrm said the following:
"There have been a lot of reports about this board freezing, and although I doesn't seem to be a problem with everyone, there have been enough complaints to make me think the board should be avoided in favor of less problematic options."
The Full ATX version doesn't appear to get these problems. The best price for this on static-ice is $108.93. It is on eBay for $99(small seller) or $109(big seller) before any discounts and before postage :)
*Have updated the post to include the full ATX version of the board.

      • Ive had the ATX version with a Ryzen 1700 OC 3.8ghz for about 10 months now, definitely recommend this board.

      • I have this model and never had any freezing issues - guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Bought it about mid-2017.
Had difficulties getting RAM past 3000MHz though.

        • I got RAM up to 3066 (Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200MHz DDR4 16GB)

        • I've also not had any issues with this board, had it over 12 months. Ryzen are known for ram compatibility issues, it wouldn't surprise me if the people have issues had unsupported ram, this would most definitely cause freezing and lock ups. But I haven't read the threads to see what ram they have.

    Any deal on the 2400g?

      • Tempting, cheers.

According to this site, the 2400G performs roughly the same as the 2200G when using 1 core or 4 cores; but almost 50% faster than the 2200G when using all of it's threads (the 2400G is 4C/8T, whereas the 2200G is 4C/4T)… but at these discounted prices, it costs 61.87% more than the 2200G.
The Vega11 iGPU (inside the 2400G) is rated here as being 37% faster than the Vega8 iGPU (inside the 2200G).

All in all, I really do not consider the 2400G good value when compare the fantastic value of the 2200G. If you want a CPU with more threads than the 2200G, I wouldn't recommend the 2400G, I would recommend the Ryzen 2600, which has dropped from $269+ to around $239+ over the last month or two, and is currently at $235 on static ice. (or $236 on eBay when using the 20% off code)…

@pronoun: i was just looking for a cheap rig to replace my 6600k+1070 as i don't game much anymore and if i do it's only csgo. going to sell my 6600k+1070 rig soon as it's overkill and i can gain funds back.

        • @pronoun:
This is why I really dislike UserBenchmark.

          https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Ryzen_5_2400G_Vega_1…

In reality the 2400g isn't that much more powerful than the 2200g on the GPU side, and OC vs OC they're remarkably close because both APU's are deprived of bandwidth. So worst case scenario the 2200g will be 15-20% slower overall (On the GPU side).

        • @HKS: by the time you have sold your old rig you will be left with very little, if any, money left over.

better off selling the 1070 and downgrading to an older second hand GPU (GTX680 or 780 or similar) if youre really that strapped for cash that you want to extract ~$200 or so out of your build while retaining the ability to play CSGO.

        • @xyron: I was thinking that too. I have a 660 laying around. selling the 1070 only might be a nice option instead of forking out bux for a ryzen setup

  • You can get ryzen 7 1700 still for around 270 with the 20% eBay deal

    • Very different level of CPU, and level of budget… but here goes:
      $345 * 0.8 = $276 eBay Link

      • Agree,

Gaming alone I'd go 2200g, but if u start looking around 200 for the 2400g I'd be looking towards the ryzen 7 1700 as well

  • decent little chip 2400 cuz of the graphics.

anything more 2600x but no graphics

  • Can anybody recommend any good deals on 3200mhz of 8gb memory or mini itx board to compliment these parts? Looking at squeezing things in the Inwin Chopin case.

Was set on a mini 2200g build but a few friends have recommend spending more to get the 2400g for easier upgradability in the future (adding a GPU and the higher thread count). Happy to hear opinions as this will be my first build in over a decade.

    • Depends on your budget… I'm not an expert on this; just done some reading…
Someone recommended this as a good deal:
      Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) CMK8GX4M2B3200C16R DDR4 3200MHz Vengeance LPX DIMM Red
$159 at Umart on static ice
*Personally, I think the only real thing going for the 2400G is the higher thread count. In terms of the GPU; the Vega8 is great (for the price); especially when with good RAM… then you can wait until the next generation of discrete GPU's come out and see what value changes happen in the GPU market after the [expected] mining price spike stabalises…
Edit: Let's be honest though; at these prices, both the 2200G and the 2400G are great products at great prices. The 2200G might be better value per dollar spent; but the 2400G will perform better into the future if you are going to make use of the extra threads :)

      • Thanks Pronoun. I was looking at the exact same RAM kit.

Leaning towards the 2400g to get a little more out of it as I don't see an upgrade with an external GPU, if it all (intended to be used for light gaming on the odd occasion). The intention is to make it just that little more future proof but then again, the 2200g may be enough for my purposes. The choice would be easier if there was a lot of difference between price and performance of both APUs.

    • Similar situation. First cpu upgrade in 9 years.

I went with a 2200g, gigabyte-ax370m-ds3h, 16GB 3200. There was very little between the 2200 and 2400 for most things

I bought a 2nd hand GTX 680 for ~ $70. (just checked how much they are going for now and it is much more wtf?)

      • I assume you wanted an external GPU from the start and not just because you were unhappy with the performance of the 2200g? If so, why did you chose the 2200g over the standard Ryzen CPU's? I'm sure there's a logic. I just don't know enough to figure it out on my own.

        • Yep had already bought the gtx680 around christmas time.

The 2200 was the best value even if not needing the inbuilt graphics. Essentially equal performance to the 1300x (2200 is slightly faster much of the time) and i have a backup gpu of sorts. I probably could have got a 320 series board and a 1300x for maybe $10-$20 more but the basic motherboards rule out any overclocking. Just didn't seem like good value.

When i upgrade in the future, passing this on to the kids or family, i wont need to put a dedicated gpu with it which is handy.

        • @Duff5000:
Good to have that insight and your reasons on why you chose it. It makes sense. Thanks for sharing.

  • I'm considering ASRock AB350M-PRO4 for my next build. But I'm also considering Gigabyte AB350M-HD3.

    https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-AB350M-HD3-rev-1x#kf

I like Gigabyte mobo a little bit better because it has more USB ports at the back panel. Is there any reason to pick ASRock rather than Gigabyte?

  • If you dont want to worry about flashing BIOS you can get the gigabyte-ax370m-ds3h for under $120.

  • Motherboard no longer available..
