Can I Claim Parking Fees on Tax?

Hi follow ozbargainers,

so got a job lined up in Adelaide where the work office will be in the CBD and public transport is double the travel times from home (not to mention changing buses etc)
so figured I might decide on driving to the new job, being in the CBD parking will be expensive so I'm curious can I claim the parking costs on tax?

Thanks in advance.

OMFG These last few posts have GOT to be trolling right?

    Kettles? Now car parking?

No - you can't claim transport costs for getting to or from work, only if you're travelling for work (e.g. tradies moving between work sites, out-of-office meetings where you're going from the office).

    • agree,… imagine if we can….

watch out for next question can we can claim back opal/myki costs???

Fair enough. I guess it is (kind of) tax season.

It's a fair question and one that I have asked in the past. To my mind it is a legitimate work related expense but there are a LOT of people out there who really beleive that government should be able to tax you as much as they can get away with so they will object when you ask these questions.

        • Bah. You'll never see me saying the government should be taxing more. But this was the latest in a series of "Can I claim [ ]" posts, and it came just after the "Can my mate claim a kettle for his home office" post.

        • @HighAndDry: Fair enough.

Can you claim a home office kettle? :)

        • @HighAndDry:

imma go find that post, you have to realise not everyone actively checks forums this will be my first time doing taxes myself (next financial year) after my last tax guy was done in by the ATO for being dodgy so a lot of this stuff is new to me.

Unfortunately not, as per D2 Work-related travel expenses 2017

You can claim expenses such as parking and bridge tolls and road tolls for a work trip, but not if they relate to parking at, or travelling to, a regular workplace.

  • LOL

  • I would say no. Unless you are driving from Company site A to Company site B and paying for parking. Home to company office is not tax deductible. Otherwise everyone will be claiming on their public transport costs.

Nope, that's part of your standard home to work commute.

of course you can mate! Don't forget to claim all your petrol, car servicing and lunch everyday as well?

    • And the cost of any lunch time extra curricular activities
