Malaysia Airlines Sale: SYD/MEL/BNE/ADL to Tokyo from $557/ $550/ $564/ $553 Ret Jul-Oct '18, Feb-May '19 (Cherry Blossoms) @FS

Malaysia Airlines is having a sale to Tokyo for the next few months, as well as several months next year that could see you in Japan for cherry blossom season.

It's hard to pick exactly, but Tokyo is usually around the last week of March or first week of April for cherry blossoms.

Malaysia Airlines is a oneworld airline, full service, and in my experience very comfortable.

But you would need to transit at Kuala Lumpur, which will take you nearly 16 hours on plane.

And off to Batu Caves / the food markets! I realise it's not for everyone but I love a stopover in KL!

      • I think the point being made is that it is a lot of flying.

transit can be random. can be in the middle of ocean

    thanks for the post OP.

i always get excited when i first see the $500 return flights, then i realise they include a stopover making it a 15-20 hour journey. i personally would much prefer direct, that extra 5-10 hours is doubled on a return trip, essentially robbing you of an entire day over the course of the holiday.

Yeah, I see that, although that day can be used to explore KL at the same time. Depends on the person of course, and how you manage with timezone changes and jetlag :/

      • actually its the mrs thats a problem, i dont mind stop overs at all! but i know she would get very stressed out from the constant check in/check out at multiple airports, it can be draining

question about these airfaire searching engines:

i have spent the past hour going through multiple dates from melb > tokyo and finally found a date range with a great price for around $750 return direct inc taxes. i then decided to search this airfare directly on the airlines website (JAL) and they have an additional $150 tax on top of the $750 airfare. is this common? i would have thought going direct to the airline would be cheaper than the third party website. ive never used a 3rd party website before so im wary of if my flight will actually get booked, with all the correct details. i wont want to be in the situation of getting to the airport and then "sorry sir your not allowed this or that etc"

update: seemed my gut feeling was correct, i googled the search provider (travel2be), and wow, nothing short of scammers. would much rather pay the extra $150 from the airline direct then have to deal with all this nonsense:
        https://au.trustpilot.com/review/travel2be.nl

this not a reflection on skyscanner, more on the websites it recommends.

        • Have you had a look at the reviews for flightcentre?
          https://www.productreview.com.au/p/flight-centre.html

Bottom line if people dont read the fine print (about changing flights, dates that incurs additional charges), they get surprised, angry and use these sites to vent. Do your research and if you dont change flights etc, booking with some third party sites can be fine (including flightcentre)

        • @flightfinderau: you are correct, most of the reviews include some stupidity on the posters behalf, and most people only post reviews when they are upset about something. however there was a common trend: almost every review said the company did not reply to emails or answer phone calls when there was a problem. for peace of mind ill just book with JAL direct.

        • @DiscoJango: Well if they fail to respond to customer queries, that's serious. your research paid off! :)

      • I love stopping over KL if it is a decent stopover (a few days) but for the MEL flights it's only about 3 hours, which is not really long enough to clear immigration, go into KL which is a good 45 mins away once way if you're lucky with traffic, come back and do security etc. would be too rushed sadly.

It's a killer, having to stay in the tin can for double or more than the time a direct flight would take… I think once you've experienced it, it's kind of a "never again" sort of thing lol ;)

    • I agree. I think 2 or 3 day stopovers are better.

  • We have direct flights to japan. Way way better than full service.
